Pushing the Limits of the Lithium Indicator Carbon Acidity Scale Using Cyclopentadiene Chemistry and 19F NMR Spectrometry

Ramsey, Harley Andrew 06 June 2022 (has links)
C-H bonds are easily the most common type of ordinary chemical bond and studying carbon acidity will help us understand and predict the reactivity of organic compounds. Carbon acidities are ranked using acidity scales. One of the most prominent is the Streitwieser Lithium Indicator (SLI) scale. The term "indicator scale" implies that acids have been measured against one another in sequential fashion. The SLI scale uses lithium ion as the conjugate-base counterion and THF as the solvent. Historically, the SLI scale has emphasized the characterization of weakly-acidic hydrocarbons. Prior to the work of our group, the strongest acid on the SLI scale has a pK value of about 10. Deck and Thornberry extended the scale to ca. pK = 0 by evaluating 23 perfluoroaryl-substituted cyclopentadiene and indene derivatives, using 19F NMR spectroscopy to determine the equilibrium constants of sequential acid-base reactions. This thesis describes the further extension of the SLI scale to ca. pK = −6. To achieve this result, a set of 11 tetrasubstituted cyclopentadienes were synthesized and their acidities evaluated sequentially with the goal of reaching a low pK value while minimizing the acidity ratio at each incremental step. The four ring substituents were combinations of pentafluorophenyl, perfluoro-4-tolyl, and perfluoro-4-pyridyl, electronegative groups listed in order of increasing electron-withdrawing power. The most acidic compound in the set was 1-pentafluorophenyl-2,3,4-tetrakis(tetrafluoro-4-pyridyl)cyclopentadiene, having pK = −5.99. Trends in the acidities of tetraarylcyclopentadienes are discussed including relative electron-withdrawing power of the three selected substituents, and conformational effects among pairs of regioisomeric cyclopentadiene derivatives. / Master of Science / Carbon acidity refers to the willingness of a carbon-hydrogen bond to release a hydrogen ion. C-H bonds are easily the most common type of ordinary chemical bond, so it makes sense that studying carbon acidity will help us understand and predict the reactivity of organic compounds. For the past several decades, emphasis in this area of research has focused on weak carbon acids, especially the simplest hydrocarbons like benzene and methane. This thesis aims in the opposite direction of synthesizing and measuring stronger and stronger carbon acids until we reach the theoretical limit for a given solvent. Because our research strategy is inherently incremental, compounds were synthesized and their acidities were measured, drawing close to the theoretical limit using tetrahydrofuran as the solvent.

An analysis of counselor characteristics that contribute to successful results-based school guidance programs

Johnson, Sharon K. January 1988 (has links)
The field of guidance is changing from one of providing services for students needing help to results-based guidance programs which provide knowledge, attitudes, and skills for all students. This shift in focus has resulted in different expectations of counselors who are responsible for implementing guidance programs in the schools. Some counselors who were successful in providing counseling services have been less successful in guidance programs. This study looked at selected counselor characteristics that contribute to successful results-based guidance programs. The question is asked, “Are counselor characteristics related to the success of a results-based guidance program?” Data on student results were collected from high school seniors and eighth-graders at eighteen secondary schools. The counselors implementing the results-based guidance programs at these schools were assessed on selected personality characteristics using the Myers-Briggs Type Indicator. In addition, data were collected on demographic factors including sex, race, age, and length of service for each counselor. Additional qualitative data were collected from administrators, teachers, counselors, and students from a successful and less-successful school using an interview format. Quantitative and qualitative methods were used to answer the research questions. Analysis of data included ranking schools based upon student mean scores in four guidance competency areas to differentiate successful from less-successful programs, a t-test was applied to four MBTI scores to determine significant differences between counselors implementing successful programs and those implementing less-successful programs, application of Kruskal-Wallis one-way anova test was used to analyze demographic factors and a stepwise, multiple regression was applied to personality factors to account for the amount of variance ascribed to each. Qualitative data were analyzed through the use of a cross-site, two variable descriptive matrix. Findings indicated that the Thinking-Feeling preference on the MBTI differentiates at the p < .01 level between counselors implementing successful results-based programs and those implementing less-successful programs at the high school level. Using a student self-report format, it was possible to differentiate between successful and less-successful results-based guidance programs at the high school level. In an interview situation, administrators, teachers, students, and counselors articulated personality characteristics that contribute to a successful results-based guidance program in terms that related closely to the findings of the MBTI. / Ed. Greenium as a Sustainability Market Indicator : A Quantitative Study Examining its Influence on ESG Adoption in Small Cap U.S. Firms

Blennow, Martin, Carlqvist, Emma January 2024 (has links)
Background: With increasing environmental concerns, green finance has emerged as a key driver for promoting corporate sustainable initiatives. Among these green financing options, green bonds have gained increased popularity. Given the expanding demand for green bonds compared to conventional bonds, a potential yield difference between these two financial instruments is argued, giving rise to the phenomenon known as the Greenium. Similarly, at the corporate level, firms experience a higher propensity to present themselves as environmentally friendly to capitalize on this sustainability preference. This can be achieved through the integration of ESG incentives into their operation.  Purpose: This thesis aims to investigate whether a predictable probability exists between the Greenium and the incentives of U.S. Small Cap companies to adopt an initial ESG score. Such a relationship would imply that the Greenium could serve as a market indicator predicting corporations’ response to increasing sustainability demand. Method: To address the purpose, this thesis uses a quantitative strategy with a positivistic deductive approach and utilizes a panel data logit model with a binary dependent variable. The main data consists of the companies' reported financial performance for each firm-year until it receives the initial ESG score, collected for the period 2015 to 2023 for U.S. Small Cap firms.  Conclusion: The findings advocate a positive effect of the Greenium, serving as a sustainability market indicator, on the probability of Small Cap U.S. firms adopting an initial ESG score; however, its effect is industry related. Certain industries are observed to demonstrate a greater response to increases in the Greenium, with the Consumer Cyclicals industry exhibiting the strongest relationship.

Factors Influencing The Ecology and Epidemiology of Microbial Indicators and Foodborne Pathogens In Surface Waters and Development of Risk Mitigations

Murphy, Claire Margaret 25 April 2023 (has links)
Foodborne outbreaks have continued to be associated with produce contamination originating from on-farm sources, such as soil or agricultural water. Additionally, the heterogeneity of the pre-harvest environment complicates the development of universal strategies for managing produce safety risks. Understanding the ecology and epidemiology of foodborne pathogens and fecal indicator bacteria (FIB) by growing regions, sample types, scale of analysis, and detection method is essential for developing targeted mitigation strategies. This dissertation utilized quantitative research methods and statistical modeling to examine the impact of sampling method, spatial, temporal, meteorological, and physicochemical factors on pathogen prevalence and FIB levels. Key findings highlight that the drivers of prevalence differ between pathogens and were influenced by sample type, scale, and region.. The variations in associations emphasize that risk varies by space and time. Therefore, results support regional and scale-dependent food safety standards and guidance documents for controlling hazards to minimize risk. Additionally, the method used for pathogen detection influences prevalence highlighting the need for standard methods since methodological differences confound comparisons across studies. Furthermore, since agricultural water quality is an important food safety priority, this dissertation aimed to determine the efficacy of chemical antimicrobial sanitizers against Salmonella in pre-harvest agricultural water. Results demonstrated that certain sanitizer treatments and conditions can significantly reduce Salmonella populations in preharvest agricultural water sources and thus may serve as a risk reduction option when used correctly. / Doctor of Philosophy / Fresh fruits and vegetables are continually implicated in foodborne outbreaks. Additionally, the source of the pathogen that causes illness in these outbreaks is often due to contact with contaminated soil or water on the farm. Since the environment is extremely diverse, the risk of foodborne pathogens is not uniform across a farm and between farms. Therefore, the development of a one-size-fits-all plan to reduce the risk of foodborne pathogens from contaminating produce on a farm is difficult. Understanding the incidence and distribution of foodborne pathogens and fecal bacteria and how these microorganisms interact with the environment is important to develop strategies to manage risk. Additionally, understanding how the prevalence of bacteria varies by state, medium (water vs soil), and farm is needed to develop targeted mitigation plans. This dissertation utilized laboratory and field-based experiments to understand how space, time, weather, and physical properties impact the occurrence of foodborne pathogens and fecal bacteria. The primary results show factors that impact prevalence are different between pathogens (Salmonella vs Listeria vs E. coli). Furthermore, the occurrence differed by sampling method (molecular vs culture), sample type (water vs soil), scale (within a farm vs between multiple farms), and region emphasizing that the risk from foodborne pathogens varies over space and time. Overall, this dissertation's results suggest that both regional and scale-specific guidelines are needed to reduce foodborne pathogen risks in the farm environment. Lastly, since the quality of the water used in growing fresh produce is an important food safety priority, the effectiveness of chemical antimicrobial sanitizers against Salmonella in agricultural water was evaluated. Results demonstrated that certain sanitizer treatments and conditions (sanitizer concentrations, water temperatures) can significantly reduce Salmonella populations in pre-harvest water sources and may serve as a risk reduction option when sanitizers are used correctly.

Recovery of Antibiotic Resistance Genes From Agricultural Runoff

Jacobs, Kyle Bowers 03 October 2017 (has links)
The reduced capacity of antibiotics to treat infections is one of the greatest health concerns that society faces. There is substantial evidence that links this reduced capacity with the widespread use of antibiotics in livestock production. Livestock can act as reservoirs of antibiotic resistance genes (ARGs) and antibiotic resistant bacteria, which can pass resistance on in the livestock's manure. It is important to understand the fate of antibiotic resistance genes and resistant bacteria in the environment after land-application of manure-based amendments. The goal of this field-scale study was to identify the effects of soil amendments (inorganic fertilizer, compost, or raw manure) and crop cover (lettuce or radish) on sediment transfer, fecal indicator bacteria (FIB), and release of ARGs in runoff over six storm events. Two FIB (Escherichia coli and enterococci) and two ARGs (sulI and ermB) were quantified in runoff from each of the constructed plots throughout the growing season. FIB and ARGs were recovered from all plots, including control plots indicating a background level within the soil. Additionally, only the effects of variability among individual storms had an impact on the concentration of FIB in runoff. Vegetative cover and storm variability affected sediment release. A trend of higher sul1 and ermB in runoff from compost and raw manure-amended plots for at least 2 months after planting crops was observed. Only one of these ARGs (ermB) is associated with the class of drugs given to the dairy cows used for the manure and compost, indicating inherent carriage of some ARGs independent of the type of antibiotic administered, and such genes can persist in the environment. These results suggest that there is a risk of ARGs being carried into areas downgradient from agricultural plots that have been amended with compost or manure. / MS / Millions of kilograms of antibiotics are used in livestock production each year in the United States, causing concern that such widespread antibiotic use could be contributing to a decrease in effectiveness of antibiotics for treating illness in humans. The purpose of this study is to understand how antibiotic resistance might be transferred from livestock to manure into the environment and ultimately to people. This field-scale study tested the effect of soil amendment (chemical fertilizer, compost, or manure) and crop cover (lettuce or radish) on the release of fecal indicator bacteria (Escherichia coli and enterococci), sediment, and antibiotic resistance genes (sul1 and ermB) in runoff coming from agricultural plots. In part, this study helped evaluate recent US Food and Drug Administration, Food Safety Modernization Act (FSMA) criteria for composting to reduce pathogenic bacteria when using manure-derived soil amendment to grow food for human consumption. This study found that fecal indicator bacteria and antibiotic resistance genes were recovered in runoff from all soil amendment and vegetable types. However, there were higher levels of antibiotic resistance genes recovered in runoff from compost and manure amended soils than from fertilizer control or unamended plots during the growing season. This suggests that composting may not be effective for reducing or removing the genes that encode antibiotic resistance in runoff.

Adlerian Life Style and the Myers-Briggs Type Indicator

Doss, Carol Rose 05 1900 (has links)
The possibility of a relationship between Adlerian life style, as measured by the Life Style Personality Inventory (LSPI), and the Myers-Briggs Type Indicator (MBTI) was examined by this research. The goal of this study was to clarify the relationship between these instruments to broaden the applicability of both instruments for both research and clinical endeavors. Life style is a concept which is vital to therapeutic intervention from an Adlerian frame of reference. Assessment of life style typically involves lengthy therapist interviews. Both the LSPI and the MBTI are questionnaires designed to measure personality variables. The 117 subjects for this study were solicited from individuals seeking counseling from an urban community counseling center. The individuals served by this agency are primarily those diagnosed with Adjustment Disorders. The LSPI and the MBTI were administered individually to each subject. Means and standard deviations were computed for the seven LSPI themes and the MBTI total. Due to a lack of research support for Theme 4 by the LSPI author, the data for this theme were disregarded. The same research indicated a strong bipolar relationship for Themes 7 and 8 (Displaying Inadequacy and Social Interest), which prompted the inclusion of Theme 8 in subsequent data analysis. A correlation analysis was developed. Using the correlation matrix, a factor analysis program was run using the SPSS-X statistical package. The principal components analysis extracted three factors which were refined by a factor rotation using the varimax rotation option. To clarify Factor 3, further analysis was performed with the MBTI data divided by continuum and a second factor analysis was run. Four factors emerged from the data with Factors 1 and 2 remaining unchanged. Factor 1 (Emotional Focusing) and Factor 2 (Confrontation) were loaded with the LSPI themes. Factor 3 (Temperament) and Factor 4 (External-Internal) were loaded with the MBTI scores. This study found that no apparent relationship exists between the variables measured by the LSPI and the MBTI. Questions were raised regarding the descriptive versus pathology-assessing nature of the themes on LSPI. Further research is suggested to define the focus of this instrument.

Effektiv försvarslogistik?

Widerståhl, Christopher January 2014 (has links)
The Swedish Defence Materiel (Försvarets Materielverk -FMV) faces a major redirection of its activities with an associated with reorganization. The new business is to deliver Defense Logistics Services to the Swedish Armed Forces (Försvarsmakten - FM). There is no existing Swedish definition for the term Defense Logistics. One purpose of this study has been to provide a proposed definition. FMV also requires a procedure for identifying relevant measurements, Key Performance Indicators (KPI), for arbitrary defense logistics systems, which can indicate whether the Defense Logistics Services delivered are effective or not.   In order to create a definition, the first step in this study is has been to examine what the theory says about methods for crafting definitions. There implied a need for a large literature review, with the purpose of identifying how and what other organizations, business and theories relate to and how they use the term of Defense Logistics. The information from the literature review was used as inspirational input when applying the improvements method, which is one of the methods available when crafting definitions.   The second purpose of this study has been to develop a procedure for identifying KPI:s related to Defense Logistics. This was also solved by a large literature review that identified existing logistical measurements and explained what KPI:s are and how they are used. The above logistical measurements together with measurements developed and derived from the definition were used to form a "comprehensive list" of possible Performance Indicators (PI).   During the design of the procedure it was recognized that it was not feasible to create a generic method for every possible defense logistic system. It was therefore proposed, as future work is, to categorize systems with similar characteristics into system types. With e.g. total cost analysis and other empirical experience as a basis, KPI can be chosen for each system type and thereby forming "net lists" for each generic system type. If the part interested in measuring a defense logistics service is interested in further narrowing the "net list" of KPI, a couple of questions are provided to assist in this, based on the concerns of the interest party.

The Caatinga, an exclusively Brazilian biome, has a high degradation rate, resulting of human action in inadequate soil management. The objective was to evaluate changes of chemical and biological indicators of organic matter due to the seasonality in preserved and disturbed areas of Caatinga ecoregions in Pernambuco, as well as qualitative characteristics of soil organic matter in these environments and uses. Three areas were selected: one in Buíque and two in Serra Talhada, in each area were studied two conditions of land use (soil in areas with preserved Caatinga coverage and areas with agricultural use).Soil samples were collected between September/2014 and September/2015, covering dry and rainy seasons in semiarid region. In each use and area, there were collected three composite soil samples at layers 0-5, 5-10 and 10-20 cm. Analysis to chemical and physical soil characterization were carried out in addition to biological analysis of total organic carbon (TOC), labile fractions of oxidizable carbon (LFCO), microbial biomass carbon (MBC), basal soil respiration (BSR), microbial quotient (qMIC), physical fractionation of organic matter (POM), physical fractionation of organic matter associated with mineral (MOM) and chemical fractionation of humic substances (HS).Data were analyzed by T test, at 5% probability. It was observed that all relevant variables are influenced by seasonality, and soil texture to LFCO, MBC and TOC, indicating a greater influence on labile carbon fractions. While the characterization by FTIR set directly related to carbon in MOP fractions with AH and AF, and MOM with humin.
