With the rapid development of the coastal environment and advances in fishing technology, marine biodiversity and fishery resources are decreasing dramatically. Therefore, each state is now focusing on conserving the marine environment. Planning Marine Protected Areas is one of the simplest and most efficient ways to do this. In recent years, researches have been conducted on Marine Protected Areas around the world. The government and academic fields in Taiwan also has started to value its surrounding marine environment. However, literature on the Marine Protected Areas in Taiwan has focused on policy and management, not so much on planning and zoning strategies. Therefore, this study uses the Geographic Information System (GIS) to simulate the planning and zoning process. This research set principles and zoning framework for Marine Protected Areas in Taiwan based on case studies and spatial analysis techniques. This study uses Gueishan Island in Yilan County as case study since the unique geographical environment of Gueishan Island provides potentiality to set Marine Protected Areas. In this study, it is suggested that "hot spring resources", "cetacean resources", and "fisheries resources" are the main protected objectives. The zoning strategies, management guidelines and recommendations are provided in this study based on these three protected objectives. According to the GIS simulation process, using the spatial analysis techniques is one of the possible efficient methodologies to plan and zone the Marine Protected Areas. With supplementary data and information, the results can be discussed more specifically in the further study. In addition, techniques of visualization during the MPAs zoning process can be a easier way for various stakeholders to understand, and to strengthen mutual communication, thereby reducing disputes to create successful Marine Protected Areas.

The objective of this study is to examine the relation between management control
system (MCS) and management information system (MIS) in securities investment
trust companies in Taiwan. The outcomes of this study could provide managers a reference base for the design and operation of MCS and MIS. This study classifies the MCSs of four firms into different positions according to the level of interactive control, and comparing with the level of four MIS characteristics. This study supposes that the level of four MIS characteristics would increase with the level of interactive control. The results of this study are as following: (1) The level of scope and integration of information would increase with the level of interactive control. (2) There is no strong correlation between the level of timeliness and aggregation of information and the level of interactive control. (3) The characteristics of securities investment trust industry have an indirect impact on MIS within the industry which causes the four firms in this study all have a good performance on information timeliness of MIS. (4) Interactive control systems and diagnostic control systems can exist in a same organization simultaneously.

This study uses the case study method to investigate how IT facilitates business model innovation. The Gloria Material Technology Corporation (GMTC) is chosen for this study. We consider the business model and information technology (IT) factors and analyze how GMTC use IT to facilitate business model innovation. Regarding the business model factor, we describe the GMTC¡¦s value propositions, value network, and key resources for co-production; further we identify the needed abilities for each stakeholder among the value network to make the co-production business model possible. For the IT factor, we present what ITs are developed and deployed among the value network in order to make the business model work. Finally, we report GMTC¡¦s performance after its innovation.

A Study of User co-production in Information System Development Project: Social Capital PerspectiveChen, Yin-hung 22 August 2011 (has links)
Management information system department has long been considered as a supporting function in organization and develop the system which should fulfill users¡¦ need to support the business process. Although previous studies indicate users participate in project process can enhance the project outcome, the final ISD project failure rate is still high and extra costs and time occurs consequently.
Based on internal service concept adopted from marketing filed, this study views MIS department is viewed as an internal service provider and end user is viewed as a customer in development stage. We attempt to understand the antecedents and consequence of user co-production in ISD project. Project outcomes are expected to be affected by user co-production, represented by open communication, shared problem solving, involvement in project governance, tolerance, accommodation, advocacy and personal dedication. Project outcome is evaluated by user satisfaction, system quality and project performance. Besides, this study adopted social capital theory and examined how co-production is affected by social capitals between users and developers.
Paired data collected from both user representatives and developers through using survey approach was used to test proposed hypotheses. The results showed that user co-production has positively significant influence on project outcomes, and social capitals between user representatives and developers also have positively significant influence on user co-production. Discussion of the results and conclusions about this study were made. Finally, the study also provides some academic and practical implications

The Reduction and Coping of Software Project Risks: Organizational Information Processing PerspectiveSu, Zhi-yuan 24 August 2011 (has links)
The impact of user risks on project performance has long been acknowledged by researchers. Identifying approaches or capabilities to reduce the likelihood of the occurrence of user risks and their consequences is then critical. By viewing information system development (ISD) as a knowledge intensive process, this study attempts to explore possible knowledge or capabilities that must be present to counter risks related to user risk elicited from the information processing perspective. We adopted the uncertainty reduction and coping concepts, and extended their study by restructuring the theoretical model to align it with the proposed reduction and coping concepts. Specifically, the effects of user risk reduction capabilities are reflected in the impacts of user participation, the relation between user with information system developer and user informance experience. At the same time, risk coping is demonstrated by hypothesizing the moderating role of ISD business expertise on the relationship between user risk and project performance. Data collected from 235 IS professionals on the basis of their experiences of recently completed ISD projects confirmed all of our hypotheses. The results successfully demonstrated that the eliciting of user risk can be reduced when users participate in the project, users and developers have wonderful relationship and users have good experiences. Furthermore, the impact of risk on project performance can be eased when developers have sufficient ISD business expertise. This study concludes with a presentation of the implication and conclusion.

User participation has long been considered as one important factor which affects the development of information management systems performance. It is believed that the cooperation between users and developers contributes to higher satisfaction and acceptance. Service has become the main economic activities in the modern society and traditional good-dominant logic has been replaced by service - dominant logic. Based on this concept, information system development can also be considered a service in which the final value determined by the extent to which the project can meet the predefined goal and fit users¡¦ needs. To maximize the value created, users should be viewed as co-producer and play a more active role in the system development process.
The main research purpose of this study is to understand how users can act as value co-production in different types of information system development project. We studied three different hospital information system projects: user-initiated internal project, IT department initiated the project, and outsourcing development project. We then explored how users can co-create value under different contexts. By using case study approach and based on service-dominant logic concept, we identified the importance of user co-production and clarify the role that users may play. The results of this study can contribute to system development project and serve as a reference for subsequent research.

Service-Dominant (S-D) Logics are the basis of contemporary economic activities. Based on this concept, Information System department should transform its role from a technical supporter to a service provider. S-D Logics highlight the importance to build up a successful value-cocreated service systems. This implies that, in addition to technical capabilities and business knowledge, IS department should possess certain capabilities to collaborate with other functional departments to delivery maximum value.
The purpose of this research is to explore possible collaborative capabilities that IS personnel should possess, besides the technical skills and business know-how. This research adopted exploratory case study method. Through in-depth interview with developers and users of three complex information system development(ISD) projects, a total of 14 collaborative capabilities that IS personnel need were identified. The relationships among those capabilities as well as their impacts on performance were also identified. Implications of the research results to practitioners and academia are also provided.

The Research of Hydrologic Management with GIS: A Case Study of the Aogu Wetland, Chiayi, TaiwanChang, Yu-Liang 08 September 2011 (has links)
Aogu Farm was built on reclaimed land. Because of its rich ecological resources,
Aogu was defined as a "Major Wildlife Habitat" in Chiayi County by the Forest Service
and is also expected to reduce carbon in the plan for the flatland forest. Power pumps
are currently used to irrigate and cultivate the area. However, after becoming the
Forest Recreation Area in the future, Aogu Farm has to reduce the influence of human
beings. However, if the Taisugar Company doesn¡¦t support the plan of Forest Service or
abandons farming and stops the pumping power, the Aogu Wetlands will suffer the
crisis of coastal inundation. Hydrological models have their own characteristics. For
example, inundation models for regional drainage using one-dimensional channel flow,
two-dimensional overland flow, and runoff in the mountains all can be assessed to
solve the inundation problems in the coastal lowlands. Nevertheless, the Aogu
Wetlands, the Case Study area, has both a dry season and a wet season even in the
lowland. When rainstorms occur, the area is unable to discharge the water by gravity
but can depend only on pumps to discharge the water into the sea. Therefore, based
on the need to manage water, hydrological surveys must be conducted to assess the
hydrological impact of continuous rainfall on the Aogu Wetlands and to provide
reference information to assist in the management. In the thesis, I use both the
Geographic Information System (GIS) and the Storm Water Management Model
(SWMM) as analysis tools. Moreover, the different regions are further divided into
watershed and the route of drainage, establishing two kinds of models of watershed
hydrology for precipitation simulations. Finally, to compare these two methods, the Arc
Hydro and SWMM models are used in watershed analysis.

Effects of land use on island vegetation changes: A case study at Wangan and Chimei Islands, Penghu, TaiwanHsu, Chia-wen 08 September 2011 (has links)
Human activities, such as agricultural activity, housing construction, forest logging, etc., play an important role in vegetation changes. Any disturbance to the ecosystem by a severe change in landscape patterns may reduce the survival capacity of certain plant species. In recent years, many studies have used a geographic information system to establish spatial data on vegetation changes; this information includes both the plant species and their spatial structure. Therefore, the aim of this study is to investigate the trends and patterns of vegetation changes and the degree of correlation with the particular environmental features at Wangan Island and Chimei Island in the Penghu Islands, from 1979 to 2009. Both islands have very similar natural features, including geographic location, natural environment, and economic development, but the spatial structures of the land use type are different. The study makes use of geographic information systems, detrended correspondence analysis, canonical correspondence analysis and landscape ecological indicators as study tools. The results are expected to promote our understanding of the spatial distribution patterns of vegetation types and plant species.
The results can be divided into three areas. First, both islands follow the same trend with regard to changes in land cover, but the rates of change are different. And the spatial structure of land use types affects the location of land cover types. Example, the centralized and decentralized villages both impact the distribution of the woodland. The mesh and ring road both impact the location of agricultural land. Second, the grassland plant species are correlated with the environmental factors, but the forest plant species are not. The major woodland specie is Leucaena leucocephala on both islands, whose physiological habits may reduce the degree of the correlation. Third, compared to the two islands, Chimei Island is more significant about that the vegetation types are correlated with the neighboring land use types. Finally, the plant species of the local vegetation types could be predicted by changes in the type of land use. In addition, this study has built a trend scheme of the spatial structure changes on Wangan Island and on Chimei Island, which can be used in the island¡¦s future environmental planning.

This research is focus on Applied Materials company strategies. We analyzed the data transferred and information system structure changed during the company acquired Applied Films. We found out the information strategies aligned to company strategies. Through this research, we can understand more the suitable information system for equipment makers and help the equipment makers to get the capability to face the changing dramatically market.
