Catching Up? The educational mobility of migrants' and natives' children in Europe.

Migrants into European countries are often less educated than European natives. We analyse whether migrants' children are more or less likely than natives' children to achieve upward educational mobility across generations, and study differences in the factors, which contribute to differences in mobility for the two groups. We find that migrants' descendants are more often upwardly mobile (and less often downwardly mobile) than their native peers in the majority of countries studied, and show that the main factor contributing to these patterns is the education level of parents. Although a lower parental education means that their children are less likely to access the same amount of human, social and financial capital as children of more highly educated parents, migrants' descendants over the last two generations were able to make significant progress in reducing education gaps with natives.

Thesis advisor: Donald Cox / <bold>Chapter 1 - Intergenerational Transfer Inflows to Adult Children of Divorce <bold> Do adult children of divorce receive less money from their parents than children of intact unions? Are they less likely to receive parental help for buying a house, starting a business or weathering a financial crisis? Though there is evidence that an individual divorced parent gives less to his child than he would give if he were married to his child's other parent, no study has examined the transfers given by both divorced parents. I approach the question of transfers to adult children of divorce from a fresh angle by asking not, "How much did the parent give?" but instead, "How much did the child get?" I also examine the correlation between parents' remarriage and transfers received. Using data from the 1988 wave of the PSID, I find that parental divorce and remarriage are uncorrelated with the incidence of a transfer. Within the select group of children who receive a transfer, however, divorce is correlated with an increased transfer amount, while a father's remarriage is correlated with a decreased amount. <bold> Chapter 2 - The Correlation Between Subjective Parental Longevity and Intergenerational Transfers <bold> Are parental financial transfers to adult children correlated with subjective parental longevity? Despite rapid and continuing increases in life expectancy, no previous study has looked at transfers in relation to parents' opinions of how long they will live. This paper uses the subjective survival probability data included in the Health and Retirement Study to examine this potential correlation for a select group of unmarried older parents. For mothers only, I consistently find modest positive correlations between subjective longevity and anticipated future inter vivos transfers and bequests. For fathers, I find a non-linear relationship between subjective longevity and anticipated future inter vivos transfers. Elder Perceptions of Higher Education and Successful Aging

Thesis advisor: Karen C. Arnold / There is a growing trend of colleges and universities to affiliate with retirement communities, often to enhance revenue sources. Little is known of the effect of this emerging phenomenon on the aging processes of elders living and learning on a college campus. This phenomenological study used focus group methodology to collect in depth interview data from a group of 31 elderly residents of a college-affiliated retirement community. Residents in this setting are required to complete 450 hours of continuing education per year. This continuing education requirement can be met through either age-segregated classes with other residents; or, intergenerational courses at the college with traditional aged students. The specific aims of this study included understanding the potential effects of the retirement community and campus settings on elders' ability to age successfully; and the impact of intergenerational engagement on the aging process. Findings from this study confirm that there are many opportunities which promote successful aging of elders in a higher education affiliated retirement community. Participants reported that successful aging is enhanced by the safety of the setting and access to: physical care; continuing education; dining facilities; socialization; intergenerational engagement; and the general disposition of intellectualism in the setting. In addition, the educational requirement results in self-selection of residents with interest in intellectual matters and continued learning that is then accentuated within the community culture. Conclusions include that more institutions of higher education should consider similar models, with careful attention to issues of enhancing both funding sources and opportunities for diversity within the program. / Thesis (PhD) — Boston College, 2009. / Submitted to: Boston College. Childhood Maltreatment and Later-Life Intergenerational Solidarity

Moorman / Every year, more than three million allegations of childhood maltreatment are received by child protective services, many of which involve cases of abuse or neglect inflicted by the victims’ parents. A number of studies found that negative consequences of childhood maltreatment can last for a lifetime. Despite the long-term impact of childhood maltreatment, later-life relationships between adult victims of childhood maltreatment and their abusive parent have rarely been examined. This dissertation aims to address the gap in the literature by examining how adult victims of childhood maltreatment relate to their abusive parent when the parent becomes old and requires long-term care assistance. This three-paper dissertation utilized existing data sources: Wisconsin Longitudinal Study and National Survey of Midlife Development in the United States. The first paper examined the mediating effect of intergenerational solidarity with the aging mother in the association between maternal childhood maltreatment and adult psychological functioning. The second paper used longitudinal data analysis to compare long-term changes in affectual solidarity with aging mothers between adults with a history of childhood abuse and those without. This paper also examined moderating effects of the correlates of childhood abuse (i.e., poor social competency and lack of emotional regulation) in the association between childhood abuse and affectual solidarity with the aging mother. The third paper focused on the caregiving situation in which adult victims of childhood abuse provided care to their abusive parent. This paper investigated whether and how providing care to the abusive parent was associated with psychological distress among abused adult children, and whether self-esteem mediated the association. By revealing the dynamics of later-life relationships between adult victims of childhood maltreatment and their abusive parent, this three-paper dissertation not only contributes to creating new knowledge to the aging literature, but also provides future direction for social work practice and policy. / Thesis (PhD) — Boston College, 2016. / Submitted to: Boston College. Opportunity for Whom? Sources of Integenerational Mobility in the U.S.

Economists generally consider intergenerational economic mobility to be an important feature of market economies, as it allows people born into poverty to achieve a measure of prosperity in the presence of minimal government intervention or redistribution. The empirical literature on mobility in the U.S. has, however, found evidence that mobility is lower than previously thought, and scholars have responded by developing expansive literatures on many aspects of intergenerational mobility, including studies of its origins. In this dissertation, I contribute to this strand of the literature by reviewing recent trends in the literature, with a particular emphasis on studies aimed at explaining the sources of mobility, and then discussing three empirical studies into specific sources of mobility, using data organized at different geographic and temporal scales. These empirical chapters focus on the role of different aspects of childhood poverty in determining income rank in adulthood, modeling variation in racial mobility gaps across different kinds of communities and local economies, and measuring the relationship between trends in intergenerational mobility and the structural transformation of agriculture in the 20th century U.S..

Is the Family Size of Parents and Children Still Related? Revisiting the Cross-Generational Relationship Over the Last Century

In most developed countries, the fertility levels of parents and children are positively correlated. This article analyzes the strength of the intergenerational transmission of family size over the last century, including a focus on this reproduction in large and small families. Using the large-scale French Family Survey (2011), we show a weak but significant correlation of approximately 0.12-0.15, which is comparable with levels in other Western countries. It is stronger for women than men, with a gender convergence across cohorts. A decrease in intergenerational transmission is observed across birth cohorts regardless of whether socioeconomic factors are controlled, supporting the idea that the family of origin has lost implicit and explicit influence on fertility choices. As parents were adopting the two-child family norm, the number of siblings lost its importance for having two children, but it continues to explain lower parity and, above all, three-child families. This suggests that the third child has increasingly become an "extra child" (beyond the norm) favored by people from large families.

“Do I really want to do this now?” Negotiations of Sexual Identity and Professional Identity: An Intergenerational Collaboration with Six Gay and Lesbian K-12 Music Educators

abstract: LGBTQ research in music education has become more available and accepted in the past ten years. LGBTQ studies in music education have focused on how gay and lesbian music educators negotiate their identities, the role of music education in the lives of transgender students, and the inclusion of LGBTQ issues in music teacher education programs. Studies have been limited to a singular content experience, such as gay vocal music educators or lesbian band directors. Additionally, studies have not explored multiple generations of LGBTQ music educators. The purpose of this study was to explore the lives as lived of six K-12 music teachers. Six individuals, from various career points, various generations, and various career paths shared their stories with me. To guide my analysis, I considered the following questions: • How do lesbian and gay music educators describe their sexual identity and professional identity? • How do gay and lesbian music educators negotiate the tensions between these identities? • What internal and external factors influence these negotiations? • What are the similarities and differences among the participants of different generations? Two large emerged from the analysis that provided a better understanding of the participants’ lives: finding sexual identity and finding professional identity. Within those themes, smaller sub-themes helped to better understand how the participants came to understand their sexuality and professional identity. External factors such as social and family support, religion, and cultural and generational movements influenced the ways in which the participants came to understand their sexual identity. Participants desired to be seen first as a competent music teacher, but also understood that they could have an impact on a student as a gay or lesbian role model or mentor. Sexual identity and professional identity did not function as separate constructs; rather they were interwoven throughout these lesbian and gay music educator’s self-identities. In order to connect the reader with the participants, I engaged in a creative non-fiction writing process to (re)tell participant’s stories. Each story is unique and crafted in a way that the participant’s voice is privileged over my own. The stories come from the conversations and journal entries that the participants shared with me. The purpose of the stories is to provide the reader with a contextual understanding of each participant’s life, and to offer some considerations for ways in which we can engage with and support our lesbian and gay music educator colleagues. This paper does not end with a tidy conclusion, but rather more questions and provocations that will continue the conversations. Mobilidade intergeracional de educação no Brasil / Intergenerational schooling mobility in Brazil

Estudos sobre mobilidade intergeracional de educação sugerem que países subdesenvolvidos apresentam menor mobilidade intergeracional que países desenvolvidos e especificamente para o Brasil, o grau de persistência estimado é ao redor de 0.7, podendo apresentar diferentes graus ao longo da distribuição de educação. Este estudo apresenta uma nova abordagem para a mensuração da mobilidade intergeracional utilizando Regressões Quantílicas. Especificamente, é proposta uma medida de distância entre os quantis condicionais para analisar a mobilidade intergeracional. Como resultado, é obtido um conjunto de matrizes que descrevem o padrão da mobilidade intergeracional em diferentes pontos da distribuição condicional de escolaridade. Utilizando dados para o Brasil, encontra-se que a mobilidade intergeracional tende a ser maior nas caudas da distribuição de escolaridade para filhos e filhas relativo à educação de pais e mães. Comparando filhos e filhas, os filhos tendem a ter menor mobilidade intergeracional que as mulheres relativo à educação de seus pais. Além do mais, a educação das mães tem maior efeito em magnitude do que a educação dos pais tanto para filhos quanto para as filhas. Também se encontrou que a educação dos filhos depende mais da educação do pai e a educação das filhas depende mais da educação das mães, indicando que os filhos tendem a ter educação similar à de seus pais e as filhas tendem a ter educação similar à de suas mães. / Studies on intergenerational educational mobility suggest that underdevelopment countries presents lower intergenerational mobility than developed countries and specifically for Brazil, the estimated degree of persistence is around 0.7 with possible different degrees on the overall distribution of education. This study presents a new approach to measuring intergenerational mobility using quantile regression. Specifically, it is proposed the use of a measure of distance between conditional quantiles to analyze intergenerational mobility. As a result, is obtained a set of matrices which describe the patterns of intergenerational mobility at different points of the conditional distribution of schooling. Using Brazilian Data (PNAD 1996) it is found that intergenerational mobility seems to be higher at the tails of the distribution of schooling for sons and daughters relative to father\'s and mother\'s education. Comparing each other, sons tend to have less mobility than daughters relative to father\'s education. Moreover, mother\'s education has stronger effects than father\'s on both sons and daughters education. It was also found that son\'s education depends more on father\'s education and daughter\'s education depends more on mother\'s education, indicating that sons tends to have education similar to their fathers and daughters tends to have education similar to their mothers.

Sustaining a Family Business Beyond the Second Generation

A significant number of funeral homes in the United States are family-owned businesses. These family-owned funeral businesses contribute to society throughout generations to create wealth, provide employment opportunities, and serve the communities that surround them. The purpose of this descriptive multiple case study was to explore strategies that leaders of family-owned funeral business owners in the eastern region of the United States used for intergenerational succession planning. Game theory was the conceptual framework for the study. Data were collected from semistructured interviews with 3 family business owners and review of the family businesses' professional association websites and family historical documents. Yin's 5-step process served as a guide for analyzing data. Data analysis revealed 6 themes: family succession values, the game, the players, strategies, payoff and rewards, and the outcome. Implications of this study for social change include family business owners' enhanced awareness of successful strategies, which may improve business continuity leading to an increased rate of intergenerational transitions within the funeral industry.
