Internet Telephony : An Internet Service Provider's Perspective

Forsell, Erik January 2005 (has links)
The aim of this Masters Thesis is to propose to SYSteam Nät AB, a local Internet Service Provider (ISP) in Uppsala, Sweden, how to implement IP telephony in their existing ITinfrastructure as a service to their customers. Thus the perspective of the thesis will be that of a local Internet Service Provider. Three general areas are covered in the thesis: Market and Business Model, Technology, and Economics. Important issues for SYSteam Nät AB as an established local broadband Internet Service Provider are to both retain present customers and to attract new customers. Some believe that offering value added services such as IP telephony could do this. Implementation of IP telephony can be done in different ways to fulfil SYSteam Nät’s requirements. The analysis leads to a proposal of how SYSteam Nät could implement IP telephony. This involves many multi-faceted business, technical, and financial issues; each aspect is examined in this thesis.

Comprehensive Black Liquor Droplet Combustion Studies

Ip, Leong-Teng 14 January 2005 (has links) (PDF)
Black liquor, a byproduct from pulp production, is burned in a recovery boiler to generate electricity and recover inorganic materials. Black-liquor-droplet combustion is fundamental to understanding and potentially improving recovery boiler performance. This investigation reports comprehensive experimental data collected for a suite of five liquors. All the data were collected with newly-designed laboratory equipment, several aspects of which are unique. Single droplets were suspended on a thermocouple and heated in a furnace. Simultaneous diameter (size and shape), internal and surface temperatures, surface emissivity, and mass were measured under various furnace temperatures and gas compositions. The images recorded by the cameras show the droplet swelling characteristics during combustion. Droplets swell more in inert environments and with low heating-rates than in oxidizing environments and with high heating-rates. Softwood liquors show greater swelling than softwood/hardwood mixed liquors. The internal temperature measured by the thermocouple is lower than the surface temperature measured with the optical pyrometer. This temperature gradient between the droplet interior and surface can be larger than 300 K. Molecular-beam mass spectrometry data were used to determine droplet mass loss and off-gas composition. These mass-loss data differ by about 10% from the balance mass data. These data provide a self-consistent and reasonably comprehensive description of black-liquor-droplet reactivity. A one-dimensional transient droplet model predicts droplet temperatures and mass loss comparable to the data. The combustion of volatiles, droplet swelling, and enthalpy of devolatilization were proved to be significant. Intermediate-sized particle (ISP) formation was investigated with a suspended-droplet experimental technique. The images indicate that a small amount of particles are ejected during drying. Insignificant ISP formation during devolatilization occurs. Char burning and smelt oxidation produce the largest amount of ISP. Quantitative analyses indicate that both droplet solids-content and liquor type impact ISP formation. Longer burning times produce more ISP, with total ISP formation being 0.2-2% of dry solids. Sampled ISPs show consistent trends in surface structure and particle sizes under a scanning-electron-microscope, independent of the experimental conditions.

Aplikace pro monitorování a správu sítě pro ISP / Application for Network Monitoring and Management for ISP

Kmoníček, Tomáš January 2009 (has links)
The objective of this master‘s thesis is to develop an ISP application for service monitoring and management. A fully functioning monitoring software has been developed that allows the administrator to check round-trip time and packet loss in the entire network. Another function of the application is obtaining information from network devices by the SNMP protocol (e.g. packet and byte count etc.). The software uses this information to create graphs per hour, day, week or year. All graphs and statistics are visualised on the administration website. For the purpose of client administration, a client database has been developed. This part of the application enables the management of payments, IP addresses, contacts etc. Both parts of the web pages have been developed by using mod_python and AJAX, making the application similar to standard desktop applications. The testing application has been developed by using Python and the entire application has been designed for modules, which can be later used for the development of other functions.

Information Seeking in a Virtual Learning Environment

Byron, Suzanne M. 08 1900 (has links)
Duplicating a time series study done by Kuhlthau and associates in 1989, this study examines the applicability of the Information Search Process (ISP) Model in the context of a virtual learning environment. This study confirms that students given an information seeking task in a virtual learning environment do exhibit the stages indicated by the ISP Model. The six-phase ISP Model is shown to be valid for describing the different stages of cognitive, affective, and physical tasks individuals progress through when facing a situation where they must search for information to complete an academic task in a virtual learning environment. The findings in this study further indicate there is no relationship between the amount of computer experience subjects possess and demonstrating the patterns of thoughts, feelings, and actions described by the ISP Model. The study demonstrates the ISP Model to be independent of the original physical library environments where the model was developed. An attempt is made to represent the ISP model in a slightly different manner that provides more of the sense of motion and interaction among the components of thoughts, feelings, and action than is currently provided for in the model. The study suggests that the development of non-self-reporting data collection techniques would be useful in complementing and furthering research to enhance and refine the representation of the ISP Model. Additionally, expanding the research to include the examination of group interaction is called for to enhance the ISP Model and develop further applications that could potentially aid educational delivery in all types of learning environments.

La responsabilité extra-contractuelle du fournisseur d'accès à Internet / The liability of Internet service providers

Duhen, Willy 23 June 2012 (has links)
They offer connections, controls access points, and can also identify their users. Their many liabilities result from their multiple functions as technical services provider, data controller or performers of judicial orders. These legal obligations are numerous and sometimes overabundant. In spite of an existing and specific liability status, the very notion of "Internet service provider" still remains legally undefined. This lacuna entails a profusion of legal status imposing an ISP status to players for which the main activity is not to provide an Internet connection : Universities, companies, individuals. From then on, criminal, civil and administrative liabilities multiply and create an instable, obscure and even abstruse status. This lexical and legal scattering is even worsened by the functional application of the electronic communications and Information Society legal framework to access providing activities. It is then necessary to unify the legal regimes associated to those activities according to stabilized legal concepts. This reconstruction will inevitably affect the Information Society legal framework as a whole. Eventually, it will open on a possible ground for the electronic communications legal framework

Using The EVA To Measure The Merger Performance Of BroadbandISP ~ Takes "Excite@Home" For Example

Yeh, Chun-Mei 02 August 2001 (has links)
¡iAbstract¡j After the disregulation of the telecommunication in Taiwan, Strategy Alliances become the hit among the companies. And the M&A is a great mass fervor in advanced countries. What we concern are if the alliance performance is the same with what the manger expect and how to measure the value of the enterprise. As we know, Sometimes the financial reports can¡¦t reflect the market value of a company. EVA (Economic Value Added) is a new indicator in financial field. It is aimed at the new hi-tech companies, which have little asset and high R&D abilities. The research is focused on the Excite@Home, the biggest broadband internet service provider (ISP) in the USA. Excite, the sixth internet content provider (ICP) in America, was merged by @Home in 1999. According to the conclusion, the marketing cost affect FGV so much, both of them are direct proportion. It means the marketing makes sense and increases the market value of the business when the merger occurred. But the margin advertising revenue didn¡¦t increase for a long time. Why? Because the integration of the merger didn¡¦t work out very well and people anticipate negatively for the company¡¦s future. Thus it can be seen the value drivers reflect the success or failure of their strategic decision. The result also shows the business model drives FGV. Taking the Excite@Home for example, FGV has huge variation accompany COV just a ripple when the company makes vast investment. In a word, when the strategic planning matches with the market expectation and it implement successfully, the FGV goes up so that the market value of the enterprise increases. On the contrary, either the failure operation or the wrong strategy makes FGV slump, even lower than COV.
