The Impact of IT Strategy and IT Infrastructure on ERP Implementation

Sheu, Yu-Zhang 04 August 2001 (has links)
After 1990s, ERP (Enterprise Resource Planning) gradually becomes the enterprises¡¦ basic information platform. ERP is often employed by companies to integrate SCM and CRM, leading to an integrated supply chain with capability to link supplies and customers. The deployment of information resources is predicated on information technology infrastructure(ITI), which provides various sorts of information services. The implementation success of information system requires ITI to work smoothly with business processes. It is apparent that ITI, although an issue related to the IT domain, is capable of influencing the whole organization. This leads to an important role for ITI in implementing ERP by enterprise. The purpose of a company¡¦s strategic planning is to adopt itself to the environment change. This would demand a sounding planning of limited resources with ITI being included. The objective of IT strategy(ITS) is to provide the enterprise an overall action plan for employing information resources. From the literature survey, an interactive relationship between ITI, ITS, and ERP implementation was proposed by this research. This research employed case study methodology to investigate four companies which had implemented ERP.The focus is to explore the relationship among ITI, ITS, and ERP implementation. The research results indicated that, if ITS is well planned prior to the implementation, the implementation process would be less problematic and the results would be beneficial to the company¡¦s competitive advantage. As for the relationship between ITS and ITI, if the deployment of IT is directed to improve business value and competiveness, the required investment on ITI would be more. In turn, a competent ITI which provides support which are less prepared in ITI, implementing ERP has the effect of reininforcing the company¡¦s ITI.In addition, for the value judgement of ITI and the motivation of ERP implementation, this research developed an investment intensity matrix which can provide reference for investment decision on ITI. In the final analysis, the research provided a list of the IT infrastructure service needed by ERP implementation, acting as a guideline for information resource deploymeny for the enterprises that intent to implement ERP system.

ERP Systems - Fully Integrated Solution or a Transactional Platform? / ERP system - Fullt integrerad lösning eller en plattform för transaktioner?

Sandberg, Johan January 2008 (has links)

This paper addresses the question of how to make use of Enterprise Resource Planning (ERP) systems in companies in the process industry were there is a pervasive need of process standardization. ERP systems have the potential to contribute with standardization and integration of organizational data through an of-the-shelf solution. In practice results of ERP systems implementation has varied greatly. Considering their implications on business processes and the complexity of the systems this should not come as a surprise. ERP systems do not only imply standardization of data but also standardization of key processes in the company. The consequences on the individual organization are therefore hard to predict. Making strategic choices between different degrees of in-house developed systems, integration of solutions from many different suppliers or to only rely on the ERP systems consultants and their proposed implementation of solutions, can be a troublesome balance act. This paper describes a case study of the Swedish diary company Norrmejerier and the implementation of the ERP system IFS analyzed from a perspective of complex system and standardization. The use of IFS at Norrmejerier can be characterized as a loosely coupled integration with the ERP system as a central integration facilitator. This solution allowed the company to make use of standardization benefits, filling the need of special functionality and at the same time limiting the negative unexpected consequences such as decreased activity support and increased complexity. The key contributions of this paper are that it shows how ERP´s can contribute to standardization and integration efforts in IT environments with peculiar demands on functionality. Secondly it demonstrates how negative side effects related to implementation of ERP systems can be managed and limited.

IT-Service Management hos en medelstor svensk IT-serviceleverantör : Framgångsfaktorer och mognad i användandet av ITIL / IT-Service Management at a midsized IT-Service provider : Sucessfactors and maturity in the use of ITIL

Sjögren, Viktor, Linderson, Adam January 2024 (has links)
Research in Information Technology Service Management (ITSM) explores howbusinesses of all sizes and digital maturity can strive to offer high-quality IT servicesto meet customers' needs in a changing world. By leveraging ITSM best practices andthe Information Technology Infrastructure Library (ITIL) framework, organizationscan ensure valuable service operations and continuous service quality improvement.Small to Medium-sized Enterprises (SMEs) particularly require tailored processesand support to implement and adapt these practices to maintain competitiveness anddrive their development forward. This qualitative study examines a Swedish medium-sized IT service provider'sperspective on success factors for ITIL implementation and its use of operationalprocesses to contribute to ongoing research in ITSM and the studied business'sdevelopment. The findings highlight the business as a rapidly growing SME withperspectives on critical success factors differing somewhat from research and havinglow process maturity according to the ITIL Process Maturity Model (PMF). Finally, suggestions are made on how businesses like this and their process maturity can bestrengthened through clarifying roles, defining operational process metrics, terminology and documentation, as well as establishing a problem managementprocess. This supports ITSM research by viewing critical success factors in a Swedishcontext and by proposing how best practices can be used to enhance serviceoperations in an SME.

IT-Outsourcing to China : In what way can ICT help manage challenges?

Esmaily, Sahand, Garrote, Emil January 2013 (has links)
The purpose of the study was to explore the current IT-outsourcing situation in China, find out what challenges exist and figure out ways of managing these challenges with the help of ICT.To achieve the purpose of the study a case study was performed in Shanghai, China. The case study was built around several interviews with the representatives of three IT-Outsourcing companies that work globally from Shanghai, China. All of the companies that were involved in the process of conducting the study were big established companies that are experts in their respective field. All of the interviewees were either from a management part of the company or selected by the management to represent their companies in the interviews. The study was performed with a qualitative research approach and was divided into a theoretical section where the current IT-Outsourcing situation was displayed and thereby the theoretical challenges were presented. This presented a need for verification on the theoretical elements and also created information gaps that needed to be filled by conducting an empirical study. The empirical study was then built around the gaps that needed to be filled in order for ICT to become an even more efficient enabler for IT-Outsourcing. Thereby four semi-structured interviews were conducted with three different companies. With the help of the theoretical and empirical studies an analytic approach were applied to then answer the research questions that are directly connected to the purpose of the study, making it possible to identify the challenges that needed to be addressed and mapping the current IT-outsourcing situation in China. These challenges then addressed and displayed in six different tables with an explanatory text attached to each table for further validation and clarification on the table content.Based on the findings, the research could then be validated with a theoretical and empirical analysis that gave grounds for the conclusions that part take in answering the research questions that give ground for the purpose of the study. / Program: Systemvetarutbildningen
