The Canadian socio-political landscape is currently being transformed by the cultural resurgence movements of First Nations, Métis and Inuit. The practice of traditional tattooing is gaining importance as a component of this process of revitalization. A growing number of Aboriginal tattoo artists across Canada are working to revive the medium. This thesis examines the work of Dion Kaszas, Angela Hovak Johnston and Toby Sicks, in particular. As part of my exploration of their revitalizing projects, I examine, among other things, questions of transmission, cultural hybridity, and agency. Employing decolonizing methodologies, particularly insights from Lakota culture, I share the stories of several tattooed Indigenous people encountered during my re-search. Based on our conversations, I seek to explain the importance of the ancestral tattoo in the assertion of identity of contemporary Indigenous peoples. I show that both in urban areas and on reserves, the practice of tattooing facilitates collective and individual healing, in addition to contributing to the affirmation of Aboriginal identities and the empowerment of various nations. In addition, I discuss ways that contemporary Aboriginal tattooing contributes to current socio-political struggles. I show how the art of tattooing, a medium unduly neglected in art history, plays a major role in cultural resurgence movements of Indigenous peoples of Canada today. Cumulatively, the thesis invites the reader to reconsider the importance of contemporary Aboriginal tattoo art and the issues it raises.

This dissertation examines the role of the festival in a linguistic community in
a minority context confronted with assimilation, exogamy, diglossia, unequal access to services in their mother tongue, as well as limited access to cultural products of their linguistic group. The case of francophone festivals in a minority situation serves as a way to verify concretely and empirically the possibilities, the conditions, the limits and the constraints of this particular form of event as a vector of cultural vitality of a minority community. The festival is also explored in regard to cultural development and cultural democracy, that is, two cultural mechanisms related to
modern cultural policy. The role of the festival in relation to identity affirmation and identity consolidation is also explored.
A multiple case study was conducted in order to compare and analyze three francophone festivals in minority communities in Ontario that take place in different regions, and that have similar and different objectives: 1) La Nuit sur l’étang Sudbury); 2) the Festival franco-ontarien (Ottawa); and 3) the Festival du Loup (Lafontaine-Penetanguishene). By focusing on each of these cases, we are able to give a broader view of the festival phenomenon set in this particular context.
This research presents, through the use of documentary sources, fieldwork observations and interviews with festival organizers, audience members and artists, the perceptions they have and the use they make of the festival. It also sheds light on the contribution of the festival pertaining to the aforementioned cultural mechanisms
and if the actors directly implicated in this type of event perceive them as being an
important issue for Frenchness.
In sum, the various contributions of francophone festivals in Ontario studied
in this research demonstrate how these events act as vectors of cultural vitality of a
francophone minority community.

The identity affirmation in the \'quilombola\'. Discourse through the semiotics perspective: the case of the black dolls from \'Quilombo de Conceição das Crioulas\'Ilca Suzana Lopes Vilela 18 December 2014 (has links)
In this thesis, we have analyzed the quilombola discourse. Our theoretical object was the construction of the meaning effect of identity affirmation in the relation with the strategy of manipulation by seduction the empiric object were the black dolls from Quilombo de Conceição das Crioulas, which is located in Salgueiro-PE. We have aimed at: discussing what is semiotic identity, how this effect is textually and discursively produced and what the subjects identity affirmation means; analyzing how the meaning effect of identity is constructed in our corpus; collating the identity affirmation with the semiotics of manipulation; reflecting about the concept of manipulation and its deployment in greimasian semiotics and showing, in the corpus, the management of the meaning by the intentionality with which, implicitly, the enunciator engenders a positive end-image of the enunciatee, and by the passionate surplus which overtakes the discourse. The results of the theoretical discussion and its incidence in the analysis of the corpus show that the semiotic identity is a simulacrum and that syntaxic elements which produce repetition are needed for the effect of its affirmation. In the discourse of the dolls, this is realized by isotopy, aspectualization, tensivity. These elements, associated with the structure of manipulation, build the strategy of seduction aiming the adhesion to the discourse, which, by the tension between wanting and having to do, put the ethic and the esthetic in movement. Notably, repeating to remember and seducing to influence have a lot of importance in the semiotics of the dolls.

This master’s thesis focuses on the absurdist thespian movement that took hold in the 1950s and 1960s. Its objective aims to understand how the absurd scene, in its dimension of comedy and derision, unfolds within the Quebec theatrical field. According to theatrical historiography, the Quebec theater of the first half of the 20th century corresponds, often with a few years of delay, to European and French modernity. However, this exact model of emulation became problematic after the Second World War and during the second half of the century. For instance, the absurd flourished in France in the 1950s around a corpus of works and authors notably defined and known to all, whereas in Quebec the movement remained a buried continent that had difficulty crossing the threshold of common perception. The crisis of logocentrism and the traditional humanist conception that marked the post-war period, as well as the growing desire to found an original national dramaturgy, led certain Quebec playwrights to propose a complete reconfiguration of theatrical art. Jacques Languirand, Robert Gurik, and Yves Hébert Sauvageau are among them, and it is through three of their original theatrical creations that we wish to explore this issue. We will begin by placing post-war Quebec theater in the broad context of its time. The second part of the study addresses questions related to the overcoming of the traditional dramatic framework which, for our playwrights, means that language can no longer be a vehicle for affirming identity, and henceforth constitutes a derisory object. We will then explore the principle of derision after the Second World War within the French theater of the absurd and how it manifests itself in the elaboration of the theatrical language from three plays of the corpus. Conclusively, the last part of this thesis proposes to identify the pleasure of derision specific to the theater by studying the plays with the help of the main theories on humor. This research is carried out through a multiple theoretical approach, at the crossroads of the historical intermedial approach of Quebec theater and the concepts and procedures of comedy theory.
