Our thesis is based on the hypothesis that St. Augustine appropriated the skeptic-academic doubt, incorporating it into his dialectical-investigative method of seeking the Truth, with the aim of overcoming the skepticism prevailing in Plato's Middle Academy. In order to do so, he presented arguments against skepticism by framing them in all segments of the soul pathematas presented in Book VI of "The Republic", which are arranged in the "divided line" scheme of the illustrious Greek Philosopher: eikasia, pistis, dianoia And noesis. Among the arguments presented by the Holy Doctor of Hippo, his bold formula stands out as si fallor, sun - if I am mistaken, I exist -, called by us in this study of existential ontological doubt. However, the Truth will only be effectively achieved at the noetic level of thought, through a process of divine enlightenment, which takes place in the human intellect, a moment in which there is an overcoming of philosophy / dialectic itself, whose denomination emblems the title of our work: “the overcoming of overcoming”.
