Task-based data-acquisition optimization for sparse image reconstruction systems

Chen, Yujia, Lou, Yang, Kupinski, Matthew A., Anastasio, Mark A. 10 March 2017 (has links)
Conventional wisdom dictates that imaging hardware should be optimized by use of an ideal observer (TO) that exploits full statistical knowledge of the class of objects to be imaged, without consideration of the reconstruction method to be employed. However, accurate and tractable models of the complete object statistics are often difficult to determine in practice. Moreover, in imaging systems that employ compressive sensing concepts, imaging hardware and (sparse) image reconstruction are innately coupled technologies. We have previously proposed a sparsity-driven ideal observer (SDIO) that can be employed to optimize hardware by use of a stochastic object model that describes object sparsity. The SDIO and sparse reconstruction method can therefore be "matched" in the sense that they both utilize the same statistical information regarding the class of objects to be imaged. To efficiently compute SDIO performance, the posterior distribution is estimated by use of computational tools developed recently for variational Bayesian inference. Subsequently, the SDIO test statistic can be computed semi-analytically. The advantages of employing the SDIO instead of a Hotelling observer are systematically demonstrated in case studies in which magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) data acquisition schemes are optimized for signal detection tasks.

High resolution time-resolved imaging system in the vacuum ultraviolet region

Jang, Yuseong 01 January 2014 (has links)
High-power debris-free vacuum ultraviolet (VUV) light sources have applications in several scientific and engineering areas, such as high volume manufacturing lithography and inspection tools in the semiconductor industry, as well as other applications in material processing and photochemistry. For the past decades, the semiconductor industry has been driven by what is called "Moore's Law". The entire semiconductor industry relies on this rule, which requires chip makers to pack transistors more tightly with every new generation of chips, shrinking the size of transistors. The ability to solve roadmap challenges is, at least partly, proportional to our ability to measure them. The focus of this thesis is on imaging transient VUV laser plasma sources with specialized reflective imaging optics for metrology applications. The plasma dynamics in novel laser-based Zinc and Tin plasma sources will be discussed. The Schwarzschild optical system was installed to investigate the time evolution of the plasma size in the VUV region at wavelengths of 172 nm and 194 nm. The outcomes are valuable for interpreting the dynamics of low-temperature plasma and to optimize laser-based VUV light sources.

Dynamické vyšetření Moiré a Pedoscan u pacientů se skoliózou / Moiré and Pedoscan dynamic examinations of patients with scoliosis

Klímová, Michaela January 2015 (has links)
Scoliosis is the most common deformity of the spine affecting from 3 to 6% of human population. The thesis "Moiré and Pedoscan dynamic examinations of patients with scoliosis" summarizes the findings of kinesiology of the spine, pelvis and hip joints and ontogenesis of axial organ straightening. It also deals with the issue of idiopathic scoliosis, its incidence, etiology, classification, diagnosis, treatment options and applied physiotherapy methods. The paper emphasizes the influence of physiotherapy that forms an integral part of medical treatment. A great part of the thesis is devoted to the rasterstereographic and pedobarographic examination. The main purpose of this thesis was to detect and evaluate parameters assessing posture and movement of patients suffering from scoliosis and compare them with a control group. For this purpose, a pedobarographic system Diers pedoscan was used, which detected the distribution of compressive forces on the feet when walking and standing. It was also used a rasterstereographic system Diers formetric III 4D, which allowed for capturing photogrammetric recording of the spine and pelvis using a video-rasterstereography based on the Moiré topography. The study was carried out with a group of 22 females with idiopathic scoliosis up to 40ř according to Cobb aged...

All-Polymer Based Fabrication Process for an All-Polymer Flexible and Parellel Optical Interconnect

Yang, Jilin January 2015 (has links)
This thesis proposed and demonstrated a new all-polymer based fabrication process for an all-polymer flexible and parallel optical interconnect cable having a vertical light coupler, which can not only cut down the cost by eliminating metallization process for alignment but also facilitate both in production and application. Throughout the process, polyimide was used as the substrate, coated by Epoclad as claddings, then AP2210B and WPR 5100 were used to fabricate waveguides and 45 degree mirror couplers, respectively. In addition, precisely aligned mirror couplers to waveguides are fabricated by using polymer-based, non-metallic, and transparent alignment marks. Conventional and metallic alignment marks are easy to be detected by camera, when a layer of high reflective material, generally Cr metal, is patterned. However, transparent polymer material is used in this process, as alignment marks made of it which are actually buried phase structures. Therefore, it is hardly to be observed by conventional microscopy system. Hence, to increase the contrast of the alignment marks, I proposed and tested a feature specific alignment camera system for which the shape and depth of the alignment marks are optimized for phase-based imaging, such as phase contrast and Schlieren imaging. The results showed a contrast enhancement of alignment marks image compared to that of a conventional microscopy system. By using the fabrication and alignment process, process for adding waveguides to the structure is identified by using the polymer based alignment marks on the WPR 5100 layer. Mask was made by etch down process using fused silica wafer plate, Cr and AZ 3312 photoresist. At last, the developed and proposed process provides means of all-polymer based fabrication process for a flexible and parallel optical interconnect.

Development of a bioreactor imaging system for characterizing embryonic stem cell-derived cardiomyocytes

Abilez, Oscar John 21 September 2010 (has links)
Cardiovascular disease (CVD) affects more than 70 million Americans and is the number one cause of mortality in the United States. Because the regenerative capacity of adult tissues such as the heart is limited, human embryonic stem cells (hESC) have emerged as a source for potential cardiac therapies. However, despite the use of a variety of biochemical differentiation protocols, current yields of hESC-derived cardiomyocytes (CM) have been low. In the case of hESC-CM, which are inherently electromechanically active, additional forms of inducing a mature cardiac fate have not been fully explored. In order to non-invasively visualize and quantify biochemical, electrical, and mechanical stimulation on hESC-CM differentiation in future studies, a bioreactor imaging system has been developed and is described in this report. / text
