Daniel_Vasconcelos_Dissertacao.pdf: 2608512 bytes, checksum: 6acc76fac2f5933627b3100c0535345f (MD5) / A língua inglesa é objeto de representações contraditórias. Ela é entendida
tanto como uma língua democrática quanto imperialista. É o idioma do
The English language is an object of contradictory representations. It is often
seen as either democratic or imperialistic. It is the language of knowledge but
also of alienation. It can open doors and also lead to exclusion. English
teachers do not always know how to deal with these different representations.
Students, parents, school owners, and coordinators seem to demonstrate
ambivalent ideas towards the language. According to the Theory of Linguistic
Imperialism (PHILLIPSON, 1992; 2010), there is a hidden agenda behind the
reproduction of fictitious or overstated positive representations of the English
language. Regardless the negative consequences on other languages and
cultures, English-speaking hegemonic nations and global corporations are
responsible for creating, maintaining, and increasing the global need of
English. In order to shed some light on the dilemma, this study is aimed at
investigating what are the linguistic imperialism representations Brazilian ELT
educators hold and how these influence their teaching practice. A study was
carried out with five English teachers from different educational realities. The
data were collected through questionnaire, interview and a focus group.
Those were eventually analyzed and triangulated in the light of the qualitative
research. The findings of this study indicated that even teachers
demonstrated to share opposing representations of the English language.
They seemed to be aware of linguistic imperialism and its importance
underlying their teaching practice, but also showed to be able to think of
strategies to minimize its consequences by catering to their students’ needs.
However, they also reported that putting those ideas into practice goes
against private schools teaching philosophies and most of the English
teaching macro structures.

This research focus on the peak Spanish language has been achieving in Brazil during the last decades. Its main objectives are: a) to promote the recovery of Spanish language teaching memory in the State of Sao Paulo, contributing to the collective history of the practice of teaching this language in Brazil; b) to show the importance of interculturality in language teaching, as well as the specificities that surround the acquisition of Spanish language by Brazilian people; c) to analyze the politics of dissemination and qualification of teachers regarding this foreign language in the State of Sao Paulo. To this purpose, we elected bibliographical and documental research as the best investigation methods. The theoretical basis is built on an interdisciplinary way, being founded primarily on Linguistic Politics, complemented by theories from Public Politics, Applied Linguistics and Discourse Analysis. The research pointed out the necessity of disseminating Spanish as a multidimensional and intercultural language, something that is not being done in the decisions taken by the State of Sao Paulo. The State: a) takes advantage of the lack of actions as a political strategy for seizuring the Act 11.161/2005, which imposes the mandatory offering of Spanish classes in all High Schools throughout the country; b) ignores official documentation from the 1980s that encouraged the dissemination of the Spanish language for a better integration with Latin America and ends up transferring its responsibility to Spain, a nation that, in the context of economic globalization in which we live, emerges as a power with large investments in the expansion of the scope of Cervantes’ language, imposing its variety as the standard, which generates an imperialist approach to languages in the national territory
