Abstract Title Cashews by SMS – an implementation in Mozambique Problem Innovation is described by Tidd, Bessant and Pavitt (2005) as the core process within organisations associated with renewal and as generic activity associated with survival and growth. Yet many organisations fail to realise the benefits of adopting an innovation. Which the theory will show this is most likely due to a problem with one certain phase in the innovation process: the implementation. Purpose The purpose with this academic paper is by a practical example illustrate the risks and problems one can come across in an implementation and the consequences of this. We also intend to give suggestion on how it is possible to restart an implementation process when the process once has failed. Research questions Why has marketAlerts failed to be implemented in Mozambique? How should IPEX resume the implementation of marketAlerts? Methodology Ethnographical approach. Conclusion Our conclusion is that the Institute for Export Promotion (IPEX) has managed to adopt marketAlerts but has failed to implement it in their daily work mainly due to the fact that they only completed the acquiring phase. The failure is due to a combination of hierarchy, lack of interest and absents of routines for sending marketAlerts. In order for IPEX to make the best use of marketAlerts we believe that they have to go back and start from the executing phase and implement the service once again.

This paper explores character educations policy documents from two Ontario school boards as well as several published articles that report on results from research related to implementation of character education programs in Ontario and the United States. This paper examines the connection between school board documents of two school boards with the Ontario Ministry of Education character education initiative that was put in place during the 2008-09 school year. It also includes interviews with three principals at one school-board as to how they approached implementation of character education and its relationship to the goal of the school and provincial policy directives.

Barriers to ERP system use : Overcoming a troublesome post-implementation phase

As a way to broaden its offering Saab Support and Services started to implement a new ERP system in 2009. The main reasons were to be able to handle larger integrated solutions from its customers and achieve synergies between its many programmes; these benefits have only partially been achieved. ERP systems are a subject that has generated a lot of literature which describes how an implementation should be done and what benefits can be had, such as lowered costs, higher auto-mation and better communication. This thesis has attempted to answer what barriers have been present at Saab in the post-implementation phase and what can be done in order to move past these and achieve unrealised benefits. Since there are gaps in the literature regarding the post im-plementation phase an exploratory approach was used in this study with a case being studied at the Support and Services division at Saab. A literature study was performed in parallel with the collec-tion of empirical data in order to let the collected data steer the direction of the research.The three barriers to beneficial use that were identified were lack of vision for continuous improve-ments, lack of formal processes and lack of ease of use. Lack of vision for continuous improvement is a barrier since without it improvement measures will not be aligned and issues will persist. By com-municating common goals and using benchmarks to follow up on those goals improvement can be made and employees can see the importance of the system. The second barrier is lack of formal pro-cesses which has caused bad transparency, creating issues with invoices and resulting in limited knowledge sharing between programmes. By standardising routines they are easier to benchmark it also becomes clearer what issues exist and how they relate to each other. With formalised processes it is easier to assign roles and it becomes easier to understand why data is entered since it is more apparent how it used later on in the process. The last identified barrier is the lack of ease of use of the ERP system. Since the software is difficult to use, training is generally needed in order to be able to use it correctly, but since limited training has been carried out employees still lack a greater un-derstanding of how to adapt it into their workflow effectively. This barrier can be overcome either by further education and training users or by simplifying the interface and improving the usability. By having a well communicated vision, employees can work towards common goals, by standardising processes and simplifying the usability of the ERP system it is easier for new employees to learn, which means that employees can be shared easier within Saab.

Challenges of Implementing an Electronic Document Management System in a Large Health Care Facility in Southern California

The implementation of Electronic Document Management Systems (EDMSs) is a complex process. Scripps Health started a project to implement the web based McKesson Horizon Patient Folder (HPF) software system in early 2011 in order to digitally capture all the information in patient charts. This research used semi-structured interviews to assess the perceived benefits of using an EDMS and its effect on work-flow from the perspective of physicians and health information management (HIM) staff at two hospitals in San Diego, California. The study was designed to assess the new work-flow processes, work-flow challenges associated with EDMS implementation, and other key factors associated with successful implementation of such systems. The research found the opinion of physicians and HIM staff about the effect of an EDMS on their work-flow to be mostly positive. The data analysis further showed that perceived benefits of an EDMS included improved patient care quality and patient care efficiency due to capabilities such as immediate access to patient information by multiple users, reduced patient data error and improved communication between HIM staff and physicians. The analysis of study data also highlighted some shortcomings of EDMSs; these included the system not being user friendly, not having full EMR capabilities and benefits and the inability of EDMSs to interface with other existing systems. The study proposes that despite some challenges post implementation, overall, an EDMS is favoured over paper based chart system. / Graduate / 0566 / 0769 / maryam.katani@gmail.com
