The Development of Strategies to Improve Capacity in Hospitality and Tourism Training at East Gippsland Institute of TAFE

This research project has explored the issues surrounding East Gippsland Institute of TAFE's (EGTAFE) inability to expand the training in Hospitality and Tourism (H&T). EGTAFE is a small regional public provider of training covering a large area in regional Victoria and it has a pivotal role in the provision of knowledge and skills to assist Gippsland's transition to an innovative economy (www.egtafe.vic.edu.au/corporate/corporate). During this project discussions were held with a variety of stakeholders, namely local business owner/operators in the H&T Industry, researching issues such as industry skills requirements and also employers perception of EGTAFE. Action Research was employed as the methodology of this research project, as the cyclical process of planning, acting, observing and reflecting has facilitated the understanding and development of improvements to practices across the Hospitality and Service Industries (H&SI) team. Interviews, questionnaires and workshops were all part of the data collection method. As a result of this research project the main outcomes that have emerged are 1) a better understanding of the needs of employers and employees; and 2) the development of a strong collaborative partnership with employers. Due to the connections with industry that were made because of this research project, the H&SI team is now in a position not only to deliver industry skills requirements, but also to be a partner in the process.

This qualitative case-study research investigated how Eastern European immigrant youth in a southern English public secondary school adjusted to and experienced the British educational system, which involves streaming students into levels of academic ability. The study focused on these students experiences of day-to-day life in a British secondary school and it explored the challenges and successes that they experienced. The study also investigated the experiences of teachers and administrators involved in the education of immigrant students. Through the use of student and faculty experiences, through recorded interviews, this study sought to understand how educators could improve the ways they are educating immigrant students.

Catechetical strategy to effectively minister the Reformed Churches' Youth Movement / Mvaleliso George Mdluli.

According to research conducted in some of the Reformed Churches, it became clear that most of the Reformed Churches, especially in the black communities, are encountering similar or almost the same problems with regard to the youth. The numbers of young people that belong to the churches, attend church services and participate in church-related activities facilitated for them are declining. Many of those whose presence and participation can be observed are not successful at taking the responsibility for applying their faith on a daily basis as they live their lives on a daily basis. It was evident that there was room for improvement with regard to youth ministry and its effectiveness. The intention with this study was to focus on possible ways of improving youth ministry in the Reformed Churches, and more specifically in the context of black communities and congregations. The approach included a look at the hermeneutical interaction between the basis theory and the meta-theory. According to the results, findings and conclusions obtained in this way, a set of practical guidelines has been formulated in an attempt to render youth ministry more effective. Attention was paid to contributions made by church leaders, parents and the young people themselves. By applying the Biblical principles together with meta-theoretical principles ministry to young people can be made more effective while keeping in mind that the purpose is to be to the honour and glory of God. The study included interviews and a questionnaire to be completed by young participants from a few selected congregations in the Mid-lands Synod, South Africa. According to the findings it was possible to conclude that the young members of the church desire to feel that they have a place in the Church of Christ a.re indeed .p art of the body of Christ. It was also revealed that they desire to be equipped in such a way as would enable them to function as Christians in their daily lives and to spread the Gospel to the world outside. They need to feel that they are useful instruments in the faith community. It is true that every member of the body of Christ is unique and has a role to play, and that is also true of the young people. The church and church leaders also have to consider the cultural differences, the existing generation gaps and the development of good relationships between youth and all other members of church. The young people, however, will have to accommodate, apply and adhere to the Biblical principles. Perceptions of secondary school middle leaders on their development and contribution to whole school improvement

The focus on school improvement has been driven at a national level through Government initiatives and the increasingly high profile of the Ofsted Inspection frameworks and procedures. The latter, in particular, has made schools very accountable for pupil outcomes. This in turn has impacted on leaders in schools, who, as part of the Ofsted Inspection framework, are given a separate judgment for their performance (Ofsted 2015). Since 2012 middle leaders have featured in the Ofsted framework descriptors used to judge leadership and management in a school. This study explores the perceptions and development of middle leaders, in one North West London secondary school, regarding their development and contribution to whole school improvement. The research suggests that while the vast majority of middle leaders did not have a full understanding of distributed leadership as a construct, they did however, consider themselves to be drivers in the school, described by three as ‘the cogs in the engine’. Positive partnerships with senior leaders and school improvement groups, in this institution, were cited by some as key features of middle leaders’ contribution to whole school improvement. The analysis of findings highlighted the positive impact of leaders working together and identifies a construct of distributed and inclusive leadership. I carried out the study within my own school as headteacher researcher. A key finding has been the significant benefit for a headteacher to do research as an insider. The experience of headteacher researcher has further ignited my longstanding passion of deepening and extending understanding and knowledge about our roles as leaders in schools.

Making Statistics Matter: Using Self-data to Improve Statistics Learning

Research has demonstrated that well into their undergraduate and even graduate education, learners often struggle to understand basic statistical concepts, fail to see their relevance in their personal and professional lives, and often treat them as little more than mere mathematics exercises. This study explored ways help learners in an undergraduate learning context to treat statistical inquiry as mattering in a practical research context, by inviting them to ask questions about and analyze large, real, messy datasets that they have collected about their own personal lives (i.e., self-data). This study examined the conditions under which such an intervention might (and might not) successfully lead to a greater sense of the relevance of statistics to undergraduate learners.

Query AutoAwesome

This research investigates how to improve legacy queries. Legacy queries are queries that programmers have coded and are used in applications. A database application typically has tens to hundreds of such queries. One way to improve legacy queries is to add new, interesting queries that are similar to or based on the set of queries. We propose Query AutoAwesome, a tool to generate new queries from legacy queries. The Query AutoAwesome philosophy is taken from Google’s AutoAwesomizer tool for photos, which automatically improves a photo uploaded to Google by animating the photo or adding special effects. In a similar vein, Query AutoAwesome automatically enhances a query by ingesting a database and the query. Query AutoAwesome produces a set of enhanced queries that a user can then choose to use or discard. A key problem that we solve is that the space of potential enhancements is large, so we introduce objective functions to narrow the search space to a tractable space. We describe our plans for implementing Query AutoAwesome and discuss our ideas for future work.

Ultrasound Imaging in Midwifery Practice

Long wait times in Canada have led to challenges in accessing timely care. Expanding the scopes of practice of non-physician health professionals may be a solution and has been implemented in Canada and abroad. In 2018, the College of Midwives of Ontario expanded the scope of practice of registered midwives to include obstetric ultrasound imaging. A mixed-methods study was conducted to investigate the interest of midwives in adopting ultrasound imaging in clinical practice and the factors that may influence their interest and support for the professional scope expansion. It investigated midwives’ perceived risks, benefits, enablers and barriers in performing ultrasound imaging and the ultrasound examinations or tasks considered most appropriate for them to do. The data were analyzed using qualitative coding and thematic analysis as well as descriptive statistics and regression analysis. It was found that both interest and support were generally high. The interest was found to be highest for limited examinations and tasks with specific clinical indications. Many believed the practice would improve access to care. There were, however, still many questions around remuneration, training, equipment and concerns around potential liability issues. / Thesis / Master of Health Sciences (MSc)
