Silva, Tatielle Rita de Souza January 2010 (has links)
This work presents the connections and disconnections that are developed through relationships and by living together based on an understanding of ethics both as the way we conduct ourselves and are constituted that are woven together to form who we really are. There are two fundamental questions in this work: how the indeterminate affects our experience and under what conditions we are called on to respond to the unpredictable effects of our actions. In order to address these research questions we employed a two-prong approach that sustains, rather than resolves, the tension between theory and experience. One way is based on eight years of narratives from the state public schools in the city of Porto Alegre. These narratives are based on a collection of specific non-linear teaching experiences. In order to symbolically register the particular scenes in these testimonies, the narratives were chosen based on their intensity and whether they decentered or produced restlessness in the narrator. The second approach is the investigative process. We placed our research within theoretical concepts based on a re-reading of Aristotle, particularly Neomachean Ethics, in order to do justice to the ethical dilemmas of his time. We make a psychoanalytical intervention, using Lacan’s articulation of dialogue that was presented in his seminar The Ethics of Psychoanalysis, to utilize elements of Aristotle’s ideas to question the relationship between man and his own actions. Our desire to operationalize the work that we do in this text led us to employ this two-pronged approach. We create an opening between experience and theoretical reflection, which signals the impossibility of going from one to the other without accounting for the losses that this transition creates. This work is divided into three chapters. In the first chapter, we work with temporalities of the possible, the necessary and chance as instances that condition human action and diminish the power of the agent to determine exactly what will happen to him. The second chapter advances this by exploring the alleged positions occupied in circumstantial arrangements in which the agent is supposedly invested in the domination of his own conduct, the context in which participation occurs, and the conduct of those who surround him. The final chapter of this work addresses the tragic dimension of existence by exploring existing relationships between action and transmission.

Impact of Irrigation Applications at Soil Moisture Deficits on Plant Development and Yield of Indeterminate and Determinate Soybean Varieties

Brown, Andy J 11 December 2015 (has links)
As the Mississippi River Alluvial Aquifer declines, it is the duty of soybean producers to become more efficient irrigators. Research was established in 2012 and 2013 in the Mississippi Delta to evaluate plant development and yield of an indeterminate soybean variety with irrigation initiated at the R1 producer standard and compared to initiation timings at the R2, R4, and R5 growth stages once a 2” deficit was reached according to the FAO-56 Penman-Monteith model. Research was also conducted to evaluate seeding rates in irrigated and non-irrigated systems in Starkville and Stoneville, MS in 2013 and 2014. These data indicate that delaying irrigation initiation beyond R1 did not adversely affect yield, and in some instances even provided a small yield increase. Irrigation did show consistent yield benefit regardless of initiation timing over a non-irrigated system. No optimum seeding rate in terms of yield or net return was observed across site years.

Lieux et non-lieux de l'écriture de la performance chez Jackson Mac Low / Places and Non-Places in Jackson Mac Low's Performance Writing

Galey, Célia 12 November 2016 (has links)
The notion of place (in its metaphorical and concrete implications) serves to characterize the paradoxical, protean object of this study namely. Jackson Mac Low's performance writing. From 1954 .to the early 1980s, the poet enhanced the disruptive impact of his practice, both in .terms of generic hybridization and semiotic, political subversion. His scores prescribe performance, yet they rarely determine every aspect of its medium, structure, or duration (in asimilar way to the indeterminate notation of such experimental composers as John Cage, Morton Feldman, Earle Brown, or Christian Wolff). An invisible dynamic force animates these texts whose seeming fixity on the page often conceals an endless process of multiplication and becoming. The lasting elusiveness of the textual Object challenges analysis as well as the understanding of what actually takes place in the Mac Lowian performance despite, or by way of, a "non-place" wherein the barriers of literary commonplaces such as the norm of a hierarchically structured opus that may be framed generically — are transcended.. The processual form takes its full import when linked to the poet's anarcho-pacifist beliefs: it then materializes the tension between utopia and heterotopy, which defin.es his unique relationship with the communities he was involved in. Mac Low's participation in many existing artistic and literary communities of his time was ubiquitously central and marginal. By virtue of its transformative and subversive impact, Mac Low's performance writing anticipates and shapes new communities, and thus appears to be, in Jacques Rancières understanding of the word, eminently political.

L'algèbre des polynômes : le Qisṭās al-mu‘ādala fī‘ilm al-jabr wa’l-muqābala d’al-Zanjānī (XIIIe siècle) / Polynomial algebra : al-Zanjanī's Qisṭās al-muʻādala fī ʻilm al-jabr wa al-muqābala (13th century)

Sammarchi, Eleonora 16 December 2017 (has links)
By the end of tenth century, one algebraist, the mathematician al-Karajī, chose to investigate the interaction between arithmetic and algebra, and began to create a coherent and exhaustive system of rules for calculating with algebraic entities. His work gave birth to a new tradition of arithmetician-algebraists, whose aim was to improve algebra with the help of arithmetic and vice versa. The focus of this tradition was on the notion of operation, and its aim was to make the algebraist able to manipulate unknown quantities like the arithmetician manipulates known ones. Al-Karajī's research was then improved by the twelfth-century scholar al-Samaw‘al. In the thirteenth century, the Persian mathematician al-Zanjānī followed this same tradition, and his Qisṭās al-muʻādala accurately recalls and elaborates upon al-Karajī's work. Al-Zanjanī presents his theory for algebraic computations, composes a long collection of problems, and concludes his treatise with a chapter on indeterminate analysis. Al-Zanjanī's treatise was unpublished until now. Our critical edition of the text is followed by a translation into French and preceded by an historical, philological and mathematical commentary of the text. This commentary aims to underline the most significant aspects of al-Zanjanī's algebra and of the tradition to which he belonge

The Subjective, Dynamical, and Liberatory Sublime in Emily Dickinson

Chen, ¢Ûei-shu 28 August 2010 (has links)
Emily Dickinson, with a soul passing beyond the confines of mainstream gender ideology, religiosity, natural theology, transcendentalism, and literary conventions, creates the sublime in her poetry, which demonstrates her realization and manipulation of inspiring thoughts and liberating movements experienced where diverse conscience stirrings, ideologies, ideas, axioms and discourses intersect. Dickinsonian sublime offers an example for Jean-François Lyotard¡¦s discourses on the modern and postmodern sublime, which coincidentally mirror Dickinson¡¦s time, her personal response and reaction. Liberating herself from the confines of gender ideology as well as female literary conventions, Dickinson invents her own self and identity, suggesting differences among women, who can be discontinuous and multiple instead of being a category with ¡§ontological integrity¡¨ (Judith Butler, Gender Trouble 23). She embodies a writer who creates according to her nature and experience as a sensitive person constantly investigating inwardly and outwardly, blurring traditionally-assigned gender distinctions, alternating between various roles, and reversing gendered traits instead of just being a subordinate advocate of mainstream domesticity, gender identity, or religiosity. Not traveling on the path constructed by the traditional theological system but abolishing its authority over her thoughts, attitudes, deeds, or interpretations and manipulation of language, Dickinson interrogates received doctrines and develops her own understanding of religion, idiosyncratic employment of the Bible, and definition of language. Inspired but not dominated by new sciences, natural theology, or transcendentalism, Dickinson cultivates and reinforces her ability to analyze, judge, and examine things ¡§without respite, without rest, in one direction¡¨ but in all directions (Ralph Waldo Emerson, ¡§Intellect¡¨ 179), transcending the confines of both natural theology and optimistic transcendentalism while displaying her ¡§active soul,¡¨ "power of forming great conceptions¡¨ and ¡§vehement and inspired passion¡¨ (Longinus, ¡§On the Sublime¡¨ 80) and intending to be what is advocated in Emerson¡¦s ¡§The American Scholar¡¨¡X ¡§Man Thinking¡¨ (64). Not conforming to literary traditions, Dickinson enters a realm of artistic experiment, representing a great poet reflecting the individualism and potentiality of American poetry in her age as well as in the modern and postmodern periods. Not making her readers passive receivers of messages or meanings, her idiosyncratic methods in rhyme, language, images, and syntax promote ¡§the sense of palpitant vigor¡¨ (Amy Lowell 7) and sublimity, repeatedly challenging, deconstructing, or activating her readers¡¦ thinking and various faculties. As a self-reliant nonconformist experimenter with a Socratic philosophic spirit, her poetry of ¡§possibility¡¨ provokes ¡§polymorphous,¡¨ multiple, ¡§psychological¡¨ inspirations and creates a subjective, dynamical, and liberatory sublime.

An investigation of the genetic determinants of succeptibility and disease behaviour in early onset Inflammatory Bowel Disease in Scottish children

Russell, Richard K. January 2008 (has links)
A series of investigations examining the importance of genetic factors in the development of the inflammatory bowel diseases (IBD) namely Crohn’s disease (CD), Ulcerative Colitis (UC) and Indeterminate Colitis (IC) has been undertaken in Scottish children. This has been performed by collection of clinical details and DNA from children with IBD, then analysing the contribution of various candidate genes to both disease susceptibility and disease phenotype. In order to carry out these studies the presenting features of a large cohort of children from across Scotland with IBD diagnosed at less than 16 years were collected, both by examination of hospital case records and by patient interview and questionnaire. For each patient a detailed analysis was made of disease phenotype at presentation including detailed examination of disease location, disease behaviour and growth parameters. A repository of clinical material (DNA, plasma and lymphocytes) was collected from children to accompany the detailed clinical parameters allowing genotype-phenotype analysis at a later stage. Additionally, DNA was also collected from parents where possible to facilitate family based association analysis of candidate genes by transmission disequilibrium testing. A previous DNA repository of healthy Scottish controls had been collected previously and the data generated was available for use in this study. The phenotypic data was collected using an established phenotypic classification (the Vienna classification) used in adult studies as well as a personally devised paediatric phenotypic classification designed for use in this thesis. Firstly, the contribution of the three common mutations within the NOD2/CARD15 gene (R702W, G908R and Leu1007finsC) was analysed in 247 children with IBD. The Leu1007finsC variant was associated with Crohn’s disease by case-control (p = 0.01) and TDT analysis (p = 0.006). Genotype phenotype analysis demonstrated NOD2/CARD15 variants were strongly associated with several markers of disease severity in CD most notably with an increased need for surgery on multifactorial analysis. Then to examine the further contribution of other mutations within the whole NOD2/CARD15 gene, the 12 exons of the gene were sequenced in 24 paediatric CD patients, to identify any additional SNPs that may have conferred an increased susceptibility to CD. Two mutations (V955I, M863V) identified in xii sequencing were genotyped in a large patient cohort, but were not found to confer increased disease susceptibility. Next, the contribution of IBD5 locus was analysed in 299 children with IBD studying 5 SNPs, including mutations in the proposed candidate genes OCTN 1 and 2. Allele frequencies of OCTN1/2 variants were significantly higher in IBD/CD cases (p<0.04). The homozygous mutant OCTN1/2 haplotype was increased in IBD and UC patients (p = 0.02 for both) compared to healthy controls. OCTN1/2 variants however were not independent of the background IBD5 risk haplotype in conferring disease susceptibility. Genotype- phenotype analysis demonstrated association of the risk haplotype with both lower weight and body mass index centiles at diagnosis as analysed by multifactorial analysis. The contribution of the 113 G/A mutation within the discs, large homolog 5 (DLG5) gene was examined in 296 children with IBD. TDT analysis demonstrated a significant association with IBD (p<0.05). Genotype-phenotype analysis demonstrated associations with higher social class, male sex and taller children. Finally, the Anti-Saccharomyces cerevisiae antibodies (ASCA) status of 301 IBD patients was determined. CD patients had a higher prevalence of ASCA antibodies compared to UC patients and healthy controls (p<0.001 for both). A positive ASCA antibody was more common in CD patients with markers of more severe disease and on multifactorial analysis in patients with CD involvement of the oral cavity (p = 0.001). In summary, the candidate genes examined thus far in children with IBD in Scotland have demonstrated a relatively minor contribution to disease susceptibility but have been demonstrated to be associated with specific disease phenotypes in patients with Crohn’s disease. The use of a novel paediatric phenotypic classification in this thesis has allowed description of these novel genotype-phenotype associations.
