Access to information by high school learners in selected schools in the Fort Beaufort Education District, Eastern Cape Province

Oyediran- Tidings,Stella Olubukunmi January 2017 (has links)
The level of access to educational information is pertinent to the attainment of quality education by learners. Librarians play a key role in facilitating access to such information. Access to educational information equips the possessor with the power of knowledge to assert their rights under any right regime, and a right to education cannot be fully exercised without corresponding access to educational information. Set in the Fort Beaufort Education District of the Eastern Cape Province of South Africa, this study evaluates the level of access to educational information as an enabler of quality education. Research revealed that despite the acclaimed educational improvement in South Africa, the quality of education in many black constituencies and provinces remains low. Therefore, the objectives of this study include inter alia an investigation of the educational information needs of high school learners in the Fort Beaufort Education District, the educational information available and accessible to them, how the learners access information, the services and technologies accessible to the learners, challenges confronting their access and means of improving learners’ access to educational information in the district and by extension in South Africa.

Information seeking behaviour of generation Y students at the Stellenbosch University Library and information service

Adams, Lindall Elaine January 2009 (has links)
Magister Bibliothecologiae - MBibl / The project examines the information seeking behaviour of a small group of so-called Generation Y students at the Stellenbosch University as they undertake an academic assignment. There is consensus across the world that universities need to adapt to the needs of Generation Y students, brought up with high-level information technology, the internet and social networking. However, research shows that this does not mean that they are information literate. They have high-tech skills but often do not know how to analyse an information need or discriminate between information sources. Information scientist Carol Kuhlthau develop the ISP model upon which the study was based. Her model sees information seeking as a complex cognitive and affective process. Successful seekers have learned how to manage the process. University libraries need to adapt their information retrieval systems and services to meet the needs of their new kinds of students. The study, a small-scale intensive qualitative case study, hopes to provide insight into how they might do this. The researcher collected data while the participants were writing the assignment. Data gathering methods included interviews, journal writings and questionnaires. / South Africa

Laipelt, Rita do Carmo Ferreira January 2007 (has links)
The study focuses on the importance of the Information and Communication Technologies (ICT) to society. It highlights the digital exclusion problem and presents Community Telecentres as an alternative for inclusion. It seeks to understand how users employ their information skills when using the Internet as means for the exercise of the citizenship. It uses the Information Literacy Standards of the Association of College and Research Libraries (ACRL) as ideal types to evaluate users´ information skills. It carries out a qualitative inquiry from a multiple incorporated case studie. As result, it demonstrates that the respondents apply mainly four of the five standards of the ACRL (2000). It concludes that telecentres are favourable spaces for the accomplishment of activities related to continued education and have great potential for the development of information literacy. It suggests the implementation of workshops that approach the five standards of information literacy, with its respective performance indicators, to be implemented jointly by librarians and communication professionals, in view of the existing connection between information literacy and media literacy. It also suggests the accomplishment of other qualitative case studies to complement the one described here.

Tebaldi, Raquel January 2015 (has links)
Almost 20 years ago the Fourth World Conference on Women, held from September 4th to 15th in 1995, in Beijing, officially recognized as one of the main areas of concern to achieve greater equality between men and women the relation between women and media. Within this context, encompassing the 20 years after the Conference and within a global perspective, this paper seeks to explore the following research questions: why is the relation between women and media problematic? How do different feminist and gender theories understand the relation between women and the media and how this questioning has transformed over the decades within feminist academia? How can there be agency and even empowerment within the relation between women and the media and what are the strategies that can be employed in this sense by the feminist movement? The central argument of this paper is that the possibility of empowerment in the relationship between women and the media seems to be more fertile when considering strategies not only for fighting for parity within this productive sector, but also fighting for awareness of the general public through educational policies. Thus, this paper analyzes empowerment strategies in the area by combining transformative recognition and redistribution measures, as proposed by Nancy Fraser (1995).

The contribution of England's primary school libraries to the development of students' information literacy

Meredith Galley, Kristin C. January 2017 (has links)
This study sets out to determine whether or not a primary school library, managed by a school librarian, makes a contribution to the information literacy development of year 6 students (ages 10-11 years old). The methodological approach to this research was interpretivist, ethnographic case studies. This is a shift from other studies on school library impact because it employs direct observation of students, and studies each school as a whole, where prior studies have relied on assessment data. This study relied on data collected in the natural environment where children were working to develop rich descriptions of the schools chosen, to be written into detailed case studies. In order to determine the contribution of the school library to information literacy development, the researcher spent time in three different schools, which had differing levels of library provision. The researcher spent time with a Year 6 (age 10-11 years) class in each school, and observed their information behaviour during a research task assigned by their classroom teacher. In order to streamline the observations, an observation framework was developed. This also ensured that each class in the three schools was observed in the same way. The researcher was immersed in each class for the duration of the class assignment, and walked around during the research lessons and spoke to the children about their research process. Semi structured interviews were conducted with members of teaching staff and head teachers to gain information about the school, and to determine their attitudes about school library provision, employing a librarian and the instruction of information literacy. Each school was then written into a case study to provide a rich picture of the school, and of the specific events during the observation sessions with the students. From the case studies, themes about the ways that the students experienced information emerged, and the findings from each school was the basis for the creation of an information literacy framework and recommendations of best practice found in each of the three schools. The investigation highlighted the important contribution that a well-managed school library made to the development of students information literacy.

Cavalcante, Luciane de Fátima Beckman. January 2014 (has links)
Abstract: In the scenario of the Information Society, University television ( TVU ) is a mean of mass communication that incorporates principles of social structure changes , from the dissemination of culture, knowledge and education , which can favor the formation of attitudes and opinions , instilling critical thinking in individuals, promoting dialogue between society and the University through the dissemination of knowledge produced by academics . As an organization situated in the communication area , TVU is based on information and knowledge and depends on these factors for its maintenance and survival in this environment characterized by complexity, innovation demand and new forms of management, in particular what refers to access and information use in order to build knowledge and serving the academic community . According to this, the central hypothesis of the thesis has been established that information literacy , while link mainstreaming in decision making permeates the processes and activities and interacts with organizational outcomes . So, the central objective was defined as : to identify and analyze the information competence of organizational subjects of a University television and its inter - relationship with access and intelligent use of information and knowledge in order to contribute for building theoretical basis for those interested in developing actions and practices in this direction, and supported on mass communication. For the operationalization of objectives and verification of central research hypothesis , we opted for a case study of descriptive and exploratory nature in University television , at Federal University of Paraná ( UFPR TV ) , using methods as the following instruments to collect data: exploratory visit to the mentioned television and semi - structured interview .
