Hall, Ossian January 2020 (has links)
Objectives:The aim of this studies have been to understand and find out how the libraries in the Umeå regioncooperationmotivated theirtransition to the dewey decimal classification system(DDC) and how they responded to opposition and counterarguments to the transition. Further the study aims to producenewinformation tothe subject of reclassification by adapting an organization theoryapproachto the two research questions. (1) How do the publiclibrariesin the umeå region cooperation motivate a transition to DDC. And (2) What strategieshas been used to respond to opposition and counterarguments in the process of transitionto DDC.Theory and Methods:Organization theoryis used to understand how people act and think in an organization. In this study selected parts concerning motivation and resistance to changein an organisation have been used as a framework in the interpretation of the data collected. The method for collecting data has been done by conductingsemi-structured interviewswith (3) representativesfrom different libraries in the region. The selection of respondents was done by strategicallyidentifying people who had both knowledge and experience relevant to the studiesobjectives. Transcripted interviews was later analyzed using thematicanalysis as described by Braun andClarke (2006)where the raw data is coded and placed into themes describingdifferent aspects of the research question.Resultsand conclusion:The study shows that the motivations used to reclassify could be divided between motivations within the organizationand those outside the organization. The ones within consisted of (1) a will by the employees to learn and develop both personally and as an organization, (2) advantages in Dewey and (3) as a proactive change for the future disappearanceof the national classification system. The outside organizational motivations was (1) a reactive change due to the national librariesrecommendation to reclassify, (2) a reaction to a more international world and (3) external changes making it wise to reclassify. Thestrategiesused to respond to opposition and counterarguments in the process of reclassification was shown to focus on cultural responses by (1) making it possible for libraries to adapt the DDC to fit theirown collectionand (2) mediatea sense of self-determining among libraries, Also (3) creating opportunities for cooperation and dialogbetween differentlibraries, and (4) organize educationon the new system. Lastly(5)the reclassification process had dedicated employees being able to respond when faced with oppoisition and motivate the reclassificationto DDC.

Sundquist, Anton January 2022 (has links)
In this study two common methods for usability evaluation was compared through a testing of the methods on Umeå University’s digital library search service. First, three expert evaluators gathered usability problems in the interface using the well known and widely used Nielsens 10 usability heuristics. Then a second evaluation was done with a user testing method called think aloud. In this, three student users performed representative tasks in the search service while verbalizing their thoughts and feelings about using the interface. This process was observed through an online communication tool with which sound and screen activity was recorded. Through an analysis of the recorded data another set of usabilty problems was gathered. Both sets of problems were then compiled and rated on a severity scale of 0-4 by the expert evaluators. This was followed by a comparative analysis of the results. The purpose of the study was to compare the results of two popular usablity evaluation methods to get a clearer picture of what kinds of result they produce. This was interesting partly because it is not clear to what degree the cheaper and less time consuming heuristic evaluation can be used to find the same kind of problems as is done with think aloud, a method considered better for finding ”real problems” (that real users struggle with). The study showed that expert evaluators found more problems than what was found through user testing but also that many of these were of low severity. The study also showed that there was an overlap in what kinds of specific problems that the two methods found but that heuristic evaluation only found 30% of the problems found by think aloud. When looking at what heuristic criteria the methods ”violated” the heuristic evaluators found problems concerning a wider range of aspects compared to think aloud. These findings suggest that while there are some overlap in the results, they differ in a way and to an extent that suggests that if possible both methods should be used to complement each other when evaluating usability.

Jakobsson, Linus January 2023 (has links)

Nylund, Saga January 2015 (has links)

Nylund, Saga January 2016 (has links)
There has been a certain shift in higher education in today’s society, resulting in academisation of education of a vocational tradition. There is a belief that information literacy will play a more vital part in many professions in the future. This has induced a proposition to change the current form of police education in Sweden. This study examines the information seeking behaviour of police academy students at Umeå university in Sweden, with the intention to shed light on an otherwise non-frequent group in information behavioural science. A survey that asked about the students’ choices of information resources in their studies, and their ability to search for and evaluate scientific information, was sent out. The results reveal that most students rely on course books and government public material for information, while also mentioning classmates as a resource. The majority consider their information literacy skills to be adequate, although some occasionally encounter difficulties in how to phrase their search questions in relation to their information needs. These results were compared to research about information behaviour in police officers and students, and related to a theory about task complexity.

Library research support for masters and PhD students at the University of Eswatini

Dlamini, Khosie Konkhekluhle 21 January 2021 (has links) (PDF)
The changing academic and technological environment coupled with evolving research practices have greatly impacted the role played by academic libraries within the institutions they serve. This has sparked a global concern amongst academic libraries to re-evaluate their services as a means to aligning themselves to this new environment. As a result, academic libraries are transforming themselves and bringing about new services, particularly focussing on how they can enhance research output by providing support to researchers. Given this context, this study seeks to ascertain the extent of research support by University of Eswatini (UNESWA) Libraries for masters and PhD students at UNESWA. To address this objective, the following critical questions were generated: What are the current services being provided by UNESWA Libraries to support masters and PhD students at the University of Eswatini?; What are the library research needs of masters and PhD students at UNESWA?; To what extent are these needs being met by UNESWA Libraries?; and, If there are library research needs of masters and PhD students at UNESWA that are not being met by UNESWA Libraries, what research support services need to be put in place to address this deficiency? Schoombee's (2014) research lifecycle adapted for library research support was used as a supporting theoretical framework to guide the study. The study adopted a convergent parallel mixed methods approach within a pragmatism paradigm and a case study design. Academic staff members and librarians at UNESWA were purposively sampled whilst a census was conducted for all masters and PhD students at UNESWA. Data was collected using a structured paper-based questionnaire and semi-structured interviews. Quantitative data was analysed using the Statistical Package for the Social Sciences (SPSS) and qualitative data was analysed thematically (by content analysis). The study concludes, inter alia, that despite the various library research support services provided by UNESWA Libraries for masters and PhD students, an expanded suite of research support services to more fully meet UNESWA's masters and PhD students' library research needs, is required. The study recommends that UNESWA Libraries should utilise available technologies and incorporate additional research support services that speak to the research needs of digital age masters and PhD students.

Yrkesverksamma konstnärers informationssökningsbeteende och informationsbehov : En användarstudie / Professional artists' information seeking behavior and information needs : A user study

Sjöberg, Emma, Sjödin, Isabelle January 2018 (has links)
This bachelor thesis examines how professional artists seek information and what information needs they have within their creative work. Previous research have mostly been focused on art students and there is a small amount of research that have focused on professional artists. The purpose of this study is therefore to examine how the artists seek information and what information needs they have. This is done by using qualitative interviews with five professional artists. The results are analyzed with two of Tom Wilson’s models of information seeking and information seeking behavior. The study also reviews a themed based theory on artists main information needs by Susie Cobbledick. This study found that Cobbledick's five themes regarding the information needs, fits well with the artists information needs overall, but some themes are perceived more prominent than others. The artists information seeking behavior and information needs vary depending on the situation in which we have found that the artists primarily seek information by turning to their colleagues, early teachers and by searching information on the internet. When we analyzed how artists seek inspiration, we found that the artists find their information through information encountering rather than information seeking.

Lundström, Sara January 1996 (has links)

Factors influencing students' choice of library and information studies

Farley-Larmour, Kim, n/a January 1999 (has links)
This study endeavoured to establish what influences students to undertake library and information studies. Are prospective students of library and information studies choosing their course and future occupation for the same sorts of reasons as in the past? Are prospective students well informed about their future occupation when they choose a course of study? What is the relative importance of some of the factors influencing their choice? Do metropolitan, regional and isolated students have the same understanding and expectations of their course and future occupation? A study of first year undergraduate students of library and information studies at three universities sought to provide answers to these questions. A quantitative and qualitative comparison of first year undergraduate students of Library and Information Studies at the University of Canberra and a random group from the same University was also undertaken in order to provide some comparative data. The findings showed that reasons for choosing library and information studies have generally not changed as much as one might expect. An interest in books and reading still ranks as a relatively important factor in students' choice, though there is some evidence of an increased interest in career and employment issues. Library and information studies students without an occupational background in the discipline generally have a hazy picture of what is involved in their future occupation and this lack of knowledge is compounded where students are located in regional or isolated areas. Generally most library and information studies respondents expressed a desire to enter 'traditional' workplaces in libraries rather than entering the broader information management field.
