Λαμπροπούλου, Ιωάννα 19 January 2011 (has links)
το IMS. / This thesis discusses the "Presence and Instant Messaging System" on an architectural framework based on the protocol SIP, eg IMS. Our goal is to implement an application that a typical user can interract with. This application provides this service using written text (text). Chapter 1 is an introduction to the concepts and entities in the specific area. Subsequently, we present the architecture of the system, ie the graphical interface of our application. In Chapter 3, we give a detailed description of the implementation plus explanations on specific parts of the code. In Chapter 4, two users run simultaneously our implementation. In Chapter 5, we refer to complex scenarios and we give solutions for them. Finally, in the Annex we attach the source code as well as the files that we had to modify for the server in order to offer us this service.

Τόκης, Θεόδωρος 17 February 2015 (has links)
Our aim is to study, develop and implement a service with PubSub the help of open source tools Agsxmpp SDK. The service will be available to all users of a system and possible for anyone to create numerous thematic "Channels" each message type. Each user will have the right recording in such a "channel" and thus is able to receive messages and updates posted on this. like "Channels" are defined as Nodes, the record is defined as subscribe, the publication to publish and finally notification / receipt as notification.

Social networking among UWC students: instant messaging genres and registers

Dalwai, Nausheena Begum January 2015 (has links)
Magister Artium - MA / Contemporary research has pointed to the importance of social media in the lives of young people today. This project aims to explore the emerging discourse conventions and generic structures of chat conversations on social networking media applications such as MXit, BlackBerry Messenger (BBM) and WhatsApp. The data for this project was acquired from undergraduate students between first- and third-year of study at the University of the Western Cape across four years (2010-2012 and 2014). The data is of three types: instant messaging chats which were collected from 2010 to 2012, and questionnaires and a focus group interview which were conducted in 2014. The main theoretical frameworks used for this project are genre and register theory by Martin and Rose (2003), Eggins and Slade (1997), Chandler (1997), Eggins (2004), Halliday and Hasan (1985). Bock (2013) and Spilioti (2011) were also used for the chat analyses. In this project I argue that although generic structures in instant messaging (IM) are conventionalised they still show a great amount of hybridity and fluidity. One of the main findings illustrates how different participants choose to begin and end their chats, whether it is with or without a greeting, and although they may be flouting the conventions of IM chatting they are not necessarily considered to be impolite. Furthermore, the findings of this project explores how the evolution and advancement of technology has contributed to the style of chatting as well as the norms of instant messaging as a genre.

Unsecured sessions with ICQ : applying forensic computing

Kling, Martin January 2003 (has links)
Digital evidence is becoming more and more frequent and important in investigations carried out by the police. To make the correct judgements, the police force needs to know what one can do with ICQ and in what ways it can be exploited. This thesis aims to point out weaknesses in ICQ that can aid the police in their work. But these weaknesses can not only be used by the police, also crackers can perform malicious acts with them. Therefore, I investigated if the use of ICQ resulted in non-secure sessions. To investigate ICQ’s security, I divided a session into an authentication phase, sending of messages, and the protection of stored messages in a history file. While investigating ICQ, I sniffed its Internet traffic and monitored files on the computer’s hard drive with MD5 checksums. I have investigated the following three ICQ applications: ICQ Pro 2003a, ICQ2Go and the Linux clone Licq. The result of the entire investigation showed that ICQ had a non-secured authentication phase, non-secured messages and no protection for stored messages. From these results the main conclusion was derived: The use of ICQ resulted in non-secure instant messaging sessions. Your ICQ account can be hijacked and another person can impersonate you and send messages that you dislike. Also, your messages can be intercepted on the Internet and their content can be read. If your computer is compromised, all your previous messages on ICQ Pro 2003a and Licq can be read.

Löfström, David January 2009 (has links)
”proof of concept”. / Opera is first and foremost a web browser, but it also has e-mail and chat clients. Before this thesis was written however, it did not have a client for the instant messaging protocol Jabber. This thesis describes the workflow and the results of the development of a Jabber client for Opera. Since there wasn’t enough time to develop a full-featured Jabber client, it was decided that the goal would be a proof of concept. The requirements were basic instant messaging functionality, which means the proper handling of presence information and the ability to send and receive instant messages. The goal was achieved and the result was a Jabber client with basic functionality. In accordance with the directives, the user interface was not a primary focus. The client has known flaws and the usability is not as good as it could be. The result could be used as the foundation of a releasable Jabber client. One of the things left to do is to improve the user interface so it matches the usability of the rest of Opera. All the requirements of the Jabber specification should also be fulfilled, especially since the company takes pride in the standards compliance of Opera2. In order to match the features of other Jabber clients, extra functionality should be added as well. Some examples would be message history, file transfer and the ability to use other instant messaging protocols through the Jabber account.

RSS – The future of internal communication?

Andersson, Ola, Larsson, Niclas January 2005 (has links)
RSS is a format for easy information sharing between computers. A RSS-file, also known as a feed or a channel, consist of a list of items. The items are structured with XML-tags and have to be processed in some way before it can be read. RSS¬readers, web-browsers with RSS support and e-mail-clients with RSS support can be used to display the feed. This thesis is focused to investigate if RSS can be used within an enterprise for internal communication. We look at different computer based communication tools that are available today and compare them with RSS. All the different tools has there advantages as well as disadvantages, we have tried to find out if there is room for one more information channel within an enterprise. Our study shows that RSS is not suitable as a stand alone solution for internal combination. RSS main strengths lies in mass information that has to be pushed out in one direction.

Utilising m-learning for enhancing student participation at a South African university of technology

Bere, Aaron January 2013 (has links)
Magister Educationis - MEd / Previous studies on the academic utilisation of mobile devices in South Africa have rendered some invaluable insights into the rationale and different ways students utilise mobile technologies in and outside the classroom. However, these studies have addressed issues about social practices of adoption in high schools that emphasise tutor-directed, instant messagingmediated supply of supplementary tuition/training in subjects like science and mathematics. Consequently, insufficient attention has been devoted to understanding the dynamic complexities of implementing mobile learning (m-Learning) projects in tertiary institutions. This research contributes to the m-Learning discourse by exploring a collaborative m-Learning perspective, through the pedagogical application of WhatsApp, a special-purpose instant messaging service implemented at a University of Technology in South Africa. This research paper argues that mobile instant messaging (MIM) may create alternative academic discussion platforms for the students’ collaborative interactions outside the classroom, which implies the transformation of pedagogical delivery. The FRAME model was utilised as the theoretical lens for this study. An interview instrument was developed based on the FRAME model constructs. Face-to-face semistructured interviews were conducted with twenty participants. The findings suggest improved academic participation, the promotion of collaborative m-Learning for critical thinking, knowledge creation and sharing, as well as fostering effective learning through student-centered approach hence liberal transformation in the lecturer’s mode of instructional delivery.

The use of instant messaging applications among swedish students and their security awareness

Tesfazion, Henok January 2020 (has links)
Instant Messaging Mobile (IM) applications are now ubiquitous and predominant in most person-to-person communications, especially intimate and sensitive conversations. This growing popularity of instant messaging is linked directly to the characteristics of speed, immediate and convenience that an IM holds which is a strong appeal for anyone that wants to communicate and collaborate in real-time with others. However, it is these features including presence awareness (the ability for IM users to know who is online and available), group chats, share media, links, and stream content as well as text and voice messages, that exposes the IM apps to the concerns of privacy and security. This essay aims to study the behavior of higher education students towards privacy and security as it concerns the use of instant messaging applications when communication informally and formally. To gather the desired data, a quantitative survey was created and distributed electronically at the University of Skövde in Sweden. Through the statistical analysis, this study presents the attitude of the participants towards the security and privacy of mobile IM applications. In conclusion, this report showed that the behavior of Swedish students towards digital security and privacy and the use of mobile IM applications were of low concern but not alarming. The analyzed results give a fair picture of the reasons for the choice of IM apps, the uses of the apps and the participant's knowledge about security and privacy. While there was some level of concern about who else could read messages sent via these IM devices between intended parties, the decision of which IM app participants had a preference for was not driven by privacy or security concerns. Furthermore, the majority of the participants believed that communicating with the IM app could be used for purposes other than informal messaging. This is significant because the student population will become part of the workforce soon and will handle sensitive, proprietary, and confidential information.
