This research has the aim of demonstrate the process on which the language of orchestration pervaded up to its arrival at film music composition and after, bring upon the processes acquired by film music using Bernard Herrmann's work as an example. On observing the musical production of the first decade of the north american cinema, it is possible to infer that the symphonic orchestration of cinema is one of the direct results of the concert music orchestration. To demonstrate this process, an cronological analysis of the works of the german composers was structured, considering this the closer model of cinema production. In advance, an equal analyses is made with the works of the cinema composers who preceeded Herrmann, considered references to the formation of the language. The third fase deals with Herrmann's work directly and analyses two of his works: Vertigo (1958) and Psycho (1960) / Mestrado / Fundamentos Teoricos / Mestre em Música

An analytical study of the Ravel orchestration of Mussorgsky's Pictures at an exhibition

Ball, Maclyn 01 January 1957 (has links)
In considering Maurice Ravel's orchestration of Mussorgsky’s Pictures At An Exhibition, this paper will consider the work of Ravel from two aspects. First, it will deal with Ravel as a classical craftsman as evident in this orchestration. Second, it will explore this work and in two of his original works in which color is of main importance and some of his characteristics as a colorist. These considerations will follow a preliminary background of Mussorgsky’s piano score, and extant editions thereof.

The Use of the Clarinet in Selected Viennese Operas, 1786-1791, With Three Recitals of Selected Works by Brahms, Muczynski, Benjamin, Widor, Hindemith, and Others

Thrasher, Michael, 1972- 12 1900 (has links)
In an appendix section, three notable arias have been transcribed for two clarinets, voice, and piano. A further evaluation of Classical period opera orchestration will aid modern performers and musicologists in their understanding of what clarinets and clarinetists were able and expected to do.

Raymond-Champagne, Rodolf 20 April 2018 (has links)

An Analysis of Maurice Ravel's Technique of Orchestration

Allman, Murray Augustus 08 1900 (has links)
It is interesting to note that several of Ravel's compositions for the piano were successful only after he had orchestrated them. Ravel, a pianist, had a natural gift for orchestration, and when writing for the piano he seems to have projected his thoughts to the orchestra; thus some of his works are more successful' for the orchestra than for the piano. Since he orchestrated several of his own piano compositions, these present an excellent opportunity for a study of his orchestrations.
