Verifying the I/O System for the new Aircraft Simulator at Saab

Erlingborn, Jesper January 2015 (has links)
This thesis revolves around how to verify that the new aircraft simulator that is currently under development at Saab Aeronautics functions as intended. Because the system is still under development, the assignment is about developing various suggestions on how to verify that the new simulator is working properly. After various test proposals have been developed for the system, I will put them to the test with the help of National Instruments software. I will also make a world study to compare how other companies develop their simulators.

An investigation of the plasma jet as an underwater acoustic source

Smith, Robert David 19 June 2018 (has links)
The plasma jet, a commonly used ignition device, has been investigated as a source of acoustic energy suitable for sub-bottom profiling. Named the plasma gun, the device discharges electrical energy in a cylindrical arc ignited in a gaseous environment surrounded by water. When the arc energy evaporates water, it produces a rapidly expanding vapor bubble that creates the acoustic pressure wave. Acoustic properties of the device are similar to small explosives, and to electric sparkers. Multiple bubble oscillations, a problem of explosive-type sources, are generally less troublesome for the plasma gun than with the sparker sources. Some degree of frequency control of the acoustic pulse is possible if proper values are selected for the electrical circuit components and for the total stored electrical energy. Peak acoustic pressures are controlled both by the total electric energy and by the rate it is delivered to the arc. These quantities are determined by capacitance, inductance, and charging voltage. Frequency components of the primary pressure pulse depend on the arc discharge frequency and on the immersion depth of the device. The bubble period depends primarily on the amount of energy discharged into the water; this in turn is proportional to the total stored electrical energy. The plasma gun has been compared to small air guns, pingers, sparkers, and boomers. Sub-bottom profiles obtained show penetration less than the 1 in3 air gun but with more resolution. Stored energy in the plasma gun, however, was nearly five times less. Penetration was equal and resolution better than electric sparkers of the same energy. Penetration was better and resolution poorer than the pinger, and resolution poorer and penetration slightly better than the boomer source. Except for the sparkers, which used the same power supply, the plasma gun has a decided advantage in equipment size and ease of deployment. / Graduate

The design of safety-critical medical infusion devices

Murphy, Robert S. January 2007 (has links)
Intravenous infusion devices - commonly known as infusion pumps - provide clinicians with mechanisms to automate the accurate dosing of potent fluid therapies to critically ill patients. In critical care applications, fluid dosing must be both accurate and safe since unwanted flow disturbance can cause physiological harm to the patient. This study consists of three discrete projects based on these vital themes of safe device design and accurate fluid delivery. The first project, commissioned by Medical Magnetics Ltd during the period 1998 onwards, proposed that the fail-safe design philosophy universally used in the design of infusion pumps, and implemented in embedded software, is lengthy and provides the manufacturer with difficulties in demonstrating the exhaustive fail-safe validation needed for an instrument to be released speedily for sale. An alternative and innovative strategy employing the design of hardware modules and using re-configurable VLSI, is proposed and shown to offer a significant reduction of the design and validation phase of development with consequent financial benefit to the manufacturer. The second project conducted as part of the Manukau Institute Research Programme for 2003 examined the manner in which dosing accuracy is assessed for infusion pumps. The International Standard used by clinicians to select apparatus suitable for treatment of 'critically-ill' patients is shown to be flawed and potentially misleading - a finding of international significance. An innovative mathematical simulation model is described that enables prediction of flow accuracy for various expected operating scenarios previously impossible to investigate using current laboratory measurement techniques. Use of this simulation model indicates that various mechanical design factors influencing system compliance and hence dosing accuracy have been previously ignored by designers and suggests that contemporary infusion pump designs are far from optimum. These findings offer an explanation for instances of dosing error previously reported in the clinical literature and are of international value. The third project of the study utilises the findings of, and is subsequent to, the second project. An innovative design is proposed for an infusion therapy device in which dosing accuracy may be maintained under operating conditions such as height change and patient venous pressure variation that cause unwanted errors in conventional equipment designs. This design is the subject of patent application, commercial exploitation and further development.

Accounting for financial instruments in corporate treasuries

Mulder, Ignatius Jacobus 06 1900 (has links)
The purpose of this thesis is to demonstrate the need for enhanced accounting methodology for financial instruments which are traded in the global financial markets. The thesis proposes an accounting framework within which the value-at-risk of financial instruments can be disclosed in the financial statements of enterprises. The thesis considers accounting developments in recent years and analyses the latest proposals suggested by international accounting bodies. It furthermore contemplates the requirements of the Bank for International Settlements in terms of capital adequacy and value-at-risk requirements. In order to provide a meaningful analysis of the subject matter of financial instruments, the various market risks pertaining to the accounting of financial instruments are discussed and considered in terms of their application to the underlying bu. siness of the enterprise. - Extensive analysis is done of valuation techniques and the mathematical concepts of value-atrisk. In this regard the pioneering works of professor Philippe Jorion of the University of California is used to illustrate the application of value-at-risk. The objective of this comprehensive analysis of value-at-risk is to suggest a meaningful method to account for risk exposures in financial instruments and ensure greater transparency in terms of disclosure. In this regard the thesis follows the guidelines proposed by the International Accounting Standards Committee in terms of recognition (definitions}, measurement (valuation}, presentation (classification} and disclosure (terms, conditions and accounting policies} of financial instruments. Consideration is also given to global accounting harmonisation and a number of accounting concerns which are presently unresolved. In this regard certain hedge issues as well as the differences between accrual accounting and fair value accounting are considered. Disclosure requirements are analysed in detail, especially in respect of value-at-risk accounting. Finally, the thesis illustrates the significant growth of products and instruments in the financial markets and the severe financial impact it has in terms of global capital and global financial losses. / Financial Accounting / DCom (Applied Accountancy)

Para avaliar métodos de estimativa da evapotranspiração deve-se considerar os erros da estimativa da ETo, evitando possíveis erros de avaliação / The aim of this investigation was to evaluate two reference methods to Monteith method, recommended by the Food and Agricultural Organization of the United Nations (FAO) as the standard method for estimating ETo in Pradópolis - SP. To this data collection, an automated weather station was installed in the meteorological station at Pradópolis - SP. Through estimate evapotranspiration (Hargreaves, Radiation and Makkink), compared to Penman-this station, we obtained measures of global solar radiation, air temperature, relative humidity and wind speed. The analysis was done by a technique that considers the mistakes of ETo, which depends on the combination of the errors of the variables that make up the estimating equations, derived from the measurement instruments used to obtain these variables. The aftermath showed a better adjustment to Hargreaves. Makkink, and Radiation methods are different from Penman-Monteith, therefore, they cannot be compared. To evaluate methods to estimate evapotranspiration and avoid possible evaluation errors, ETo estimate errors must be considered
