Toward better numerical integration

Immerzeel, Gerrit January 1972 (has links)
Romberg's quadrature is investigated with special emphasis on its use in automatic integration. Section 1 reproduces many of the facts known about Romberg's method and investigates the selection of stepsize. Section 2 discusses the integration of singular integrands, with emphasis on detecting algebraic endpoint singularities and the reliability of methods used for handling them. Section 3 looks at CADRE, the first automatic integration routine published based on the adaptive use of Romberg's method. It is adapted for use on the IBM 360 and is compared to SQUANK, an adaptive Simpson routine already available in the U.B.C. program library. / Science, Faculty of / Computer Science, Department of / Graduate

African learners' perception of vernacular language in disegregated schools

Luthuli, Thandazile Monica January 2003 (has links)
DISSERTATION SUBMITTED TO THE FACULTY OF EDUCATION IN FULLFILMENT OF THE REQUIREMENTS FOR THE DEGREE OF MASTER OF EDUCATION IN THE DEPARTMENT OF FOUNDATIONS OF EDUCATION, 2003. / This study contributes to the debate which is still going on about African languages and the need for its recognition in desegregated schools. This study reveals the historical background of the indigenous African languages in South African Education and the international trends on languages in the few countries which have been selected on the literature review of the study. It is clear that vernacular language problem is not in South African desegregated schools only but even other countries internationally. They have the problem of their languages being dominated by other languages for example English. In Great Britain, English has been spread throughout the various islands to the extent that only a very small 'Celtic Fringe' remains to remind people of linguistic diversity that once existed. Today, an attempt is being made to stop decline of the Celtic languages. In France, they are also facing the problem of vernacular languages which are declining but in recent years the state has found it necessary to meliorate its French-only policy and recognize at last the existence of other languages. The study further reveals the importance of language to everybody especially African people who need recognition of their languages in the desegregated schools. The study also highlights the problems that are encountered by African learners who are in desegregated schools. The importance of language has been pointed out in order to highlight the role vernacular language plays to pass information from generation to generation. This is done through mother tongue communication which starts from childhood. It is important then, that our learners should know their vernacular languages so that we can not lose our identity and the value of our language by forgetting our roots which we gain from our vernacular languages. Problems which have been highlighted have proved that the learners will not cope well in these schools if their African languages are not considered, since the learner learns well through understanding the subject matter in his language first, before understanding it through the second language. The stress the African learners in desegregated schools usually experience is mostly the result of the language. Research data have proved that whereas African learners and their parents have appreciated the admission of African learners by the former Model C schools, they still value their own language, which is the mother tongue. They want their mother tongue to be taught by being considered as a language of learning. The analysis has indicated that the African learners would be happy for their mother tongue to be recognised. Since the Ex-Model C schools have mixed racial groups the recommendations given provide suggestion of African languages being taught to all racial groups. Different methods to help the educators in multiracial classrooms have been given including guidelines and principles for multilingualism and approaches to multilingualism. Therefore the results of this investigation might be the positive ones as the recommendations given have a variety of methods which might assist the educators and learners.

School Integration: A Case Study of the 1971-1972 School Year at Indian River High School

Fowler, Lee V. 23 February 1998 (has links)
This dissertation is a case study of the initial year of integration at a predominantly white southern high school. The school's racial configuration changed from approximately 10% black to approximately 35% black in the course of a single year. The study includes a background of desegregation in Virginia, a discussion of the closing of the black high school in the local area, and a detailed, thematic study of the events of the school year. The information is gleaned from newspapers, historical works by original sources, school records, papers and memos, and primarily, from sixty-six interviews with former students, teachers, administrators, parents and community members. Important sections deal with racial issues on a personal level for the students and teachers involved. Organizations such as the football team are dealt with in detail. Particular attention is paid to clubs and organizations, especially those where the students could choose the members. A substantial portion of the paper provides first hand accounts of violence that occurred during the school year, in particular an incident of riot proportions. The objective of the study is to provide a detailed account of school integration through first hand accounts of day to day events at a school in the process of desegregation. / Ed. D.

Volume 1-2

Vrancken, Patrick Henri Ghislain 29 September 2023 (has links) (PDF)
The purpose of this thesis is to answer the following question : Ii the E.E.C. in fact a legal model for greater economic integration in Southern Africa? Part One of the thesis provides a description of the organization of the E.E.C After a brief historical introduction, Section One analyses the Community's main institutions : their composition, their function, and their decision-making mechanisms. The different legal instruments of Community law, the relationship between this law and traditional international law on the one hand and the national law of the member states on the other, the interaction between the Council, the Commission and the European Parliament as well as the financing of the organization are also considered in some detail. Section Two examines some of its most important spheres of activity, namely, free movement of goods, free movement of persons, freedom to provide services, free movement of capital, the rules on competition, regional policy, fiscal harmonization and V.A.T., legal equalization processes and transport. A definition of the internal market and an account of other innovations introduced by the Single European Act in the field of the organization's activities concludes this section on the E.E.C Part Two deals with the principal organizations of economic cooperation in Africa, of which South Africa is not a member, and examines to what extent the African continent has been influenced by this European experience. After a short historical account leading to the existence of these African organizations, each kind of institution in these different organizations is dealt with separately in Section One, particular attention being given to their composition, their functions, and their different legal instruments. This is followed by a study of the law of these organizations and to what extent it differs from the traditional international law, as well as the interaction between the different institutions and the financing of these organizations. Section Two examines the main fields of activity of the organizations studied in this Part, namely, the suppression of customs duties, the common customs tariff, the removal of technical barriers to trade, free movement of persons, freedom to provide services, free movement of capital, transport and communication, natural resources, social and cultural matters, regional policies, industrial development, and other fields of activity. Part Three is divided into three chapters. The first one is the study of the principal instruments of multilateral economic cooperation to which South Africa belongs, that is, the Southern African Customs Union, and Monetary Area and the Economic Community of Southern Africa. The second Chapter presents general comparisons between the institutional structure of the organizations, their fields of activity, as well as the supranationalism which they could eventually enjoy. Finally, the third Chapter consists of conclusions which .are of a more personal note, that is to say, a presentation of an original system based on the study made in this thesis, particularly of the E.E.C., a system which, in my opinion, could be applied to the internal law in South Africa and at the same time could offer a model of economic and political integration in Southern Africa.

Barani, Luca 14 September 2008 (has links)

Pero, Martin 15 April 2013 (has links) (PDF)

Acquisition integration framework for technology enterprise : the human factor

Botes, Daan Jaco 15 February 2011 (has links)
Acquisitions are common in today’s business and people involved in acquisitions face challenges when they become part of this process. This thesis aims to provide an understanding of the human factors that determine the outcome of acquisition integration. Various frameworks exist in the literature that focuses on human and task integration as measures for success. In addition to these, the author explores an additional aspect, customer integration, as an important measure to determine overall integration success. Execution is the key to successful acquisition integration. Employees of a technology company were surveyed to gauge their acquisition experiences over three past acquisitions. The survey was a limited targeted case study that focused on analytical value, rather than statistical value. The survey data is analyzed and aligned with the literature data to identify some possible best practices the technology company could follow in future acquisitions. The survey results are used to establish the implications for the company’s acquisition process and to help the development of a playbook for acquisition integration. / text

Understanding the complexity of determining the human integration strategy during post-acquisitions

Oxalaryd, Pierre, Sandström, Carolina January 2014 (has links)
Acquisitions have become an increasingly used tool for corporate growth during the lastdecade. Even so, most acquisitions fail, due to a lack of focus on the human elements of the integration process. This research sheds light on the human integration process of acquisitions and more specifically, three of its critical elements; culture, structure and humanresources management. However, when investigating acquisitions at Atlas Copco it becomesapparent that these elements are emphasized and prioritized differently in differentacquisitions. By conducting 22 interviews with managers from both Atlas Copco and managers and employees from three of its acquired organizations, this paper seeks tounderstand how the acquirer should choose an appropriate human integration strategy and what factors that determine that choice. Furthermore, it examines how the acquirer should manage the employees of the acquired firm to facilitate the implementation of changes duringthe integration process. The results shows that the acquirer choose to emphasize and prioritize the aspects that are most important to reform in order to allow the implementationof future changes in the integration process. In these cases, the prioritized aspects are alsoconsidered critical to improve by the employees, therefore the prioritization creates a perception of the acquirer’s good intentions with the integration as a whole. Furthermore, the results reveals that it is important that the acquirer invest in resources for communication, trainings and additional personnel to help the employees understand and support the changesduring the entire process.
