Rational agencyCampbell, Peter G. January 1988 (has links)
It is claimed that action discourse provides us with a criterion of adequacy for a theory of action; that with action discourse we have a family of concepts which a theory of action must accommodate. After an exegesis of Davidson's essay "Agency", it is argued that his semantics of action is incompatible with our concepts of motivation and responsibility for action and of attributions of action and agency, and must, therefore, be rejected. A theory of rational agency is presented within which are to be found accounts of intention, coming to intend, intentional action, and an alternative semantics of action which connects the action essentially to agency. The theory of rational agency is then used to illuminate the concepts of trying, compulsion, autonomy and involuntariness, mistake, accident, and the so-called active-passive distinction. / Arts, Faculty of / Philosophy, Department of / Graduate

Deceptive robotsKlock, Brian Lee 25 April 2009 (has links)
Plan recognition in cooperative or adversarial situations requires the ability to reason with beliefs. The problem is complicated in adversarial situations because an opponent may employ deception. In this case, an agent must also be able to reason about an opponent's beliefs (nested beliefs) as well as his own beliefs. A system has been developed that permits agents to reason with nested beliefs using possible worlds semantics; consistency maintenance is employed to allow agents to revise their beliefs when an inconsistency occurs. The advantages over prior systems are that belief revision occurs without user interaction and that beliefs are treated as objects having equal status with facts; this permits complex interaction between beliefs and actions. The theory includes treatment of many areas necessary to create a system of multiple autonomous reasoning agents. These agents are given the ability to deceive each other and to predict when they are being deceived. The system is shown to be practical by its implementation in a simulation. / Master of Science

Visual intention detection algorithm for wheelchair motion.Luhandjula, Thierry Kalonda. January 2012 (has links)
D. Tech. Electrical Engineering. / Proposes a vision-based solution for intention recognition of a person from the motions of the head and the hand This solution is intended to be applied in the context of wheelchair bound individuals whose intentions of interest are the wheelchairs direction and speed variation indicated by a rotation and a vertical motion respectively. Both head-based and hand-based solutions are proposed as an alternative to solutions using joysticks pneumatic switches, etc.

The relevance of the speech act theory to Buzani KubawoScheckle, Linda Ann 10 1900 (has links)
Austin's Speech Act Theory is a valuable tool for the
analysis of a literary text. In interaction, the intentionand
purpose-success of linguistic communication can be gauged
by establishing whether participants have met felicity
conditions and have respected maxims. When the Co-operative
Principle is ignored, special effects are achieved and
receivers can only make sense of utterances through
implicature and inferences based on background knowledge and
mutual contextual beliefs.
In the drama, Buzani kubawo, characters interact on four
levels of time in space and place. They reveal themselves
and convey theme through their speech and actions. Conflict
is entrenched by lines of force drawn between opposing
characters and between sub-worlds contrasted. Cohesion,
determined by plot structure, and form, expressed on the
endophoric and exophoric levels, give meaning to the drama.
The micro-analysis of the wedding scene illustrates how
communication can misfire should the playwright allow it! / African Languages / M.A. (African languages)
