Création, stabilité et rupture d'interfaces fluides / Creation, stability and rupture of fluid interfaces

Nous présentons plusieurs expériences d'hydrodynamique interfaciale illustrant des procédés de création, stabilité et rupture d'interfaces fluides, liquide/liquide ou liquide/gaz. Dans un premier temps, nous étudions le processus de fragmentation d'objets déformables, gouttes et bulles, par un obstacle rectangulaire ou une boucle asymétrique placés dans un canal microfluidique. La deuxième partie de ce travail se consacre à des expériences menées avec des bulles et films liquides minces formés à l'aide d'eau savonneuse ou de liquides très visqueux. Après avoir revisité quelques surfaces minimales adoptées par un film de savon à l'équilibre, nous étudions divers mécanismes de formation de bulles et de bulles interfaciales. Dans ces deux parties, nos études sont menées en faisant varier de façon systématique les paramètres hydrodynamiques, physicochimiques et géométriques contrôlant chaque expérience. Nous interprétons les résultats obtenus en microfluidique à l'aide d'arguments simples basés notamment sur l'analogie électro-hydraulique aux bas nombres de Reynolds, tandis que l'analyse dimensionnelle et des lois d'échelle permettent de décrire la plupart des comportements expérimentaux des bulles et films liquides minces. / We report hydrodynamic experiments illustrating the creation, stability and rupture of either liquid/liquid or liquid/gas interfaces. First, we investigate the fragmentation of deformable objects, such as drops and bubbles, against a rectangular obstacle or at the entry node of an asymmetric loop placed in a microfluidic channel. In the second part of this work, we report experiments conducted with bubbles and thin-liquid films either made with soapy water or highly viscous fluids. After having described a few minimal surfaces sought by a soap film at equilibrium, we study a variety of mechanisms that yield the formation of bubbles and interfacial bubbles. In both parts, our investigations are conducted by systematically varying the parameters (hydrodynamic, physicochemical and geometric) controlling each experiment. We interpret microfluidic results with simple physical arguments based on the electro-hydraulic analogy at low Reynolds numbers. Experimental findings on bubbles are rationalized mostly using dimensional analysis and scaling laws.

Uma abordagem para projeto de aplicações com interação multimodal da Web / An approach to design Web multimodal interfaces

O principal objetivo do desenvolvimento de aplicações multimodais é possibilitar uma maneira mais natural dos seres humanos se comunicarem com as máquinas, por meio de interfaces mais eficientes, intuitivas, fáceis de usar e, de certa forma, mais inteligentes. No entanto, a literatura da área mostra que a reutilização, tanto de conhecimento como de código fonte, ainda apresenta problemas, dados a complexidade do código em sistemas multimodais, a falta de mecanismos eficientes de testes de usabilidade e a dificuldade em se gerenciar a captura, o armazenamento e a recuperação de conhecimento de projeto. Nesta tese argumenta-se que a utilização de uma abordagem sistemática, centrada no usuário, apoiada por uma ferramenta computacional e com um modelo bem definido que permita o desenvolvimento de interfaces multimodais com a reutilização de Design Rationale, aumenta e melhora os níveis de usabilidade, promove a identificação e utilização de padrões de projeto e o reúso de componentes. Para demonstrar esta tese, apresenta-se neste texto a abordagem para o desenvolvimento de interfaces multimodais Web, MMWA, e o seu ambiente de autoria, o MMWA-ae, ambos compostos por atividades que auxiliam a equipe de projeto durante as fases de projeto, desenvolvimento e avaliações de usabilidade. São discutidos também os resultados obtidos com a execução de três estudos de caso, realizados no ambiente acadêmico, nos quais se buscou determinar a viabilidade da abordagem e os benefícios que podem ser alcançados com a combinação de diferentes técnicas, a saber: design rationale, padrões de projeto, modelagem de tarefas, componentes de software, princípios de usabilidade, avaliações heurísticas, testes com usuários, regras de associação, entre outras. Os resultados evidenciam que a abordagem e seu ambiente de autoria podem proporcionar diferentes benefícios para organizações que desenvolvem sistemas multimodais, incluindo o aumento da usabilidade e consequentemente da qualidade do produto, bem como a diminuição de custos e da complexidade do desenvolvimento com a reutilização de código e de conhecimento capturado em projetos anteriores / The main goal of developing multimodal applications is to enable a more natural way of communication between human beings and machines through interfaces that are more efficient, intuitive, easier to use and, in a certain way, more intelligent. Contribution to the study of the use of brain-computer interfaces in virtual and augmented reality / Contribution à l'étude de l'utilisation des interfaces cerveau-ordinateur en réalité virtuelle ou augmentée

L’objectif de cette thèse est d’étudier l’utilisation d’Interfaces Cerveau-Ordinateur (ICOs) au sein de la Réalité Virtuelle (RV) et de la Réalité Augmentée (RA). Notre but est d’évaluer la compatibilité entre les systèmes basés sur une ICO et la RV/RA, de concevoir de nouveaux outils pour la visualisation de l’activité cérébrale basée sur la RV/RA, et finalement de proposer de nouveaux usages pour les ICOs, plus particulièrement en combinaison avec des vêtements intelligents. Afin de réaliser ces objectifs, nous avons tout d’abord réalisé une étude de faisabilité concernant l’association entre une ICO et la RV. Notre objectif était d’étudier l’influence de l’activité motrice sur une ICO. Nous avons conçu un système similaire à un jeu vidéo, servant comme support à une étude utilisateur montrant que l’ICO peut être utilisée avec succès, même lorsque les participants exécutent une activité musculaire exigeante. Dans un second temps, nous avons également proposé des outils de visualisation de l’activité cérébrale basés sur la RV/RA. Notre premier système nommé «Mind-Mirror» superpose un cerveau virtuel représentant l’activité cérébrale d’un utilisateur à l’image de celui-ci dans un miroir. Une étude utilisateur a montré qu’aucune perte significative de performance de l’ICO n’a été constatée, même avec une complexité additionnelle due à l’affichage basé sur la RA. Notre seconde contribution se nomme «Mind-Window» et étend les possibilités du Mind-Mirror en permettant plusieurs points de vue sur un même enregistrement d’activité cérébrale en utilisant des tablettes. Notre dernière contribution se nomme «Mind-Inside» et permet aux utilisateurs de visualiser en RV leur activité cérébrale en temps réel tout en étant immergés dans un cerveau virtuel. Enfin, nous avons étudié comment les ICOs et la RV/RA peuvent être appliquées au domaine des vêtements intelligents. Nous avons mis en place une plateforme d’expérimentation consistant en une cabine d’essayage virtuelle intégrant une ICO et permettant aux utilisateurs de porter des vêtements intelligents virtuels en RA. Poursuivant ces travaux, nous avons également conçu une «cape d’invisibilité» inspirée par l’univers de Harry Potter. Cette cape virtuelle permet aux utilisateurs de se camoufler en RA en utilisant leur état mental. Une étude utilisateur sur le contrôle de l’effet a mis en avant l’amélioration de l’expérience utilisateur et «l’impression d’avoir un superpouvoir». / The objective of this PhD thesis is to study the use of Brain- Computer Interfaces (BCIs) within Virtual Reality (VR) and Augmented Reality (AR). Our goal is to evaluate the compatibility between systems based on a BCI and VR/AR, to design new tools for the visualization of the brain activity based on VR/AR, and finally to propose new uses for the BCIs, and especially in combination with smart clothes. In order to fulfil these objectives, we have first designed and performed a feasibility study concerning the combination of a BCI and VR. Our objective was to study the influence of motor activity on a BCI. We have designed a system similar to a video game, serving as a base for a user study showing that this BCI can be successfully used, even when participants are performing a demanding muscular activity. We have also proposed three visualization tools for the brain activity based on VR/AR. Our first system called the «Mind- Mirror» which enables the visualization of our own brain activity «inside our own head» by superimposition. A user study has shown that no significant drop in BCI performance occurred, even with the additional complexity due to our AR-based display. Our second contribution is called «Mind- Window» and extends the Mind-Mirror’s possibilities by enabling one or multiple users to visualize the brain activity of another person as if her skull was transparent. Our last contribution is called «Mind-Inside» and allows users to visualize their brain activity in real-time while being immersed in a virtual brain. Finally, we have studied how BCIs and the VR/AR can be applied to smart clothes. We have designed an experimental platform comprising a dressing room integrating a BCI. Following this work, we proposed an «invisibility cloak» inspired by the Harry Potter universe. This virtual cloak allows users to camouflage themselves in AR using their mental state. Results from a preliminary study based on a simple videogame inspired by the Harry Potter universe could notably show that, compared to a standard control made with a keyboard, controlling the optical camouflage directly with the BCI could enhance the user experience and the feeling of «having a super-power».

WIMP and Beyond: The Origins, Evolution, and Awaited Future of User Interface Design

The field of computer user interface design is rapidly changing and diversifying as new devices are developed every day. Technology has risen to become an integral part of life for people of all ages around the world. Modern life as we know it depends on computers, and understanding the interfaces through which we communicate with them is critically important in an increasingly digital age. The first part of this paper examines the technological origins and historical background driving the development of graphical user interfaces from its earliest incarnations to today. Hardware advancements and key turning points are presented and discussed. In the second part of this paper, skeuomorphism and flat design, two of the most common design trends today, are analyzed and explained. Finally, the future course of user interface is predicted based off of emergent technologies such as the Apple Watch, Google Glass, Microsoft HoloLens, and Microsoft PixelSense. Through understanding the roots and current state of computer user interface design, engineers, designers, and scientists can help us get the most out of our ever-changing world of advanced technology as it becomes further intertwined with our existence.

Elaboración de métricas para la evaluación de usabilidad y seguridad de las interfaces de los ATM

En el Perú el 41% de la población mayor de 18 años se encuentra bancarizada y el 76% de ellos utilizan los ATM. Pero en algunos casos, la interacción entre los usuarios y los ATM puede ser frustrante y presentar inconvenientes. Se han planteado lineamientos y heurísticas específicas para ATM, pero en la actualidad, la industria no utiliza herramientas para medir de manera objetiva aspectos de usabilidad y seguridad en las interfaces de ATM. En ese sentido, el presente trabajo parte de la búsqueda en la literatura de los lineamientos de usabilidad y seguridad de interfaces para ATM y posteriormente la búsqueda de métricas para softwares bancarios para combinarlas con las métricas de usabilidad y seguridad de la ISO25000 y elaborar una propuesta de métricas específicas para la evaluación de interfaces de ATM. Esta propuesta de métricas se enriqueció considerando la información obtenida en entrevistas y encuestas a expertos en diseño y del dominio, obteniendo como resultado final 23 métricas de usabilidad y 12 métricas de seguridad de interfaces. Luego de adaptar las métricas a un formato apto para facilitar el llenado de datos por parte de un evaluador, la propuesta de métricas fue validada mediante 20 test de usuarios en un laboratorio de ATM, evaluando el flujo de retiro en ATM de los 4 principales bancos del Perú; llegando a la conclusión que las 35 métricas satisfacen las necesidades expresadas por las personas que trabajan relacionados al diseño y desarrollo de interfaces de ATM. / Tesis

AUTOMATION SYSTEM FOR THE FLIGHT TEST LABORATORY (SALEV)

ITC/USA 2006 Conference Proceedings / The Forty-Second Annual International Telemetering Conference and Technical Exhibition / October 23-26, 2006 / Town and Country Resort & Convention Center, San Diego, California / A novel Automation System for the Flight Test Laboratory (SALEV) is developed in full compliance with EA-4/02 Standard (i.e. Expression of the Uncertainty of Measurement in Calibration) to compute the uncertainty of the measurement at the calibration laboratory of the Flight Tests Group (GEEV). The GEEV performs flight test campaigns to certificate and/or develop aircrafts and its systems. Then, flight tests instrumentation (FTI) systems are developed and installed in the test bed. The FTI data acquisition complies with IRIG Standard. The FTI is composed by a data acquisition system, which performs signal conditioning, sampling and quantization of all measurements provided by a set of transducers. All parameters are coded in a PCM format and represented in a non-dimensional numerical form (i.e. counts).To allow the establishment of a relation between the non-dimensional form and the physical quantity, a calibration process is carried out to provide the coefficients of a calibration curve. This process is also used to determine the systematic and random errors (i.e. the uncertainty). The accuracy and reliability of calibration process should comply with the requirements, which are customized for each flight test campaign. The satisfactory performance of the SALEV calibration process is achieved by automation in all steps. The SALEV development is presented, which includes the following steps: · Database definition; · Study of all steps and parts that forms the calibration process (i.e. from transducer to final uncertainty determination) to determine its associated uncertainties; · Automation of the entire calibration process (including the process itself up to the effective control of standard and instruments); · Development of algorithms to compute the uncertainty compliant with EA 4/02; and · System validation in compliance with ISO/IEC 17025. As result of the SALEV operation, it could be verified that measurement quality was improved, and the required time for calibration was substantially reduced. Also the standardization of this process allows failures forecast due to aging of systems parameters (i.e. bias).
