Internal Communication in a Global Change Project

Internal communication is the heart in all actions in every organization and plays a key role in a successful change project. Volvo Cars is a global company in an implementation phase of the change project ”One Finance”. The purpose of the change project is to standardize the financial processes which will change the organization structure in the financial departments. Since this is a global change project there are several factors that can affect the internal communication and can result in affecting the success of a change project. The purpose of this thesis is to study the internal communication during a global change project and to analyze what factors are affecting the internal communication from a global perspective. The thesis will also include what impact internal communication has on the organization. The study will mainly be on the internal communication between the headquarter in Gothenburg and the developing financial department in America. Collecting primary data in terms of semi-structure interviews has provided an understanding about Volvo Cars internal communication. Using electronic communication channels and cascade-communication model the organization has informed well about the concept and the purpose of the change. Some respondents are still requesting information about how they should work according to the change. Overall the acceptance of this change has created job-satisfaction and increased the engagement for employees, this can lead to business success. All respondents agree that there are factors that affect the internal communication during this global change project. Organization culture, multi-cultured organizations, organization change, power structures and globalization are all affecting the internal communication in ways of how to communicate, the amount of internal communication, and the currents of the internal communication and can create misunderstandings. The thesis is including an internal communication matrix that gives a clear overview of how different internal stakeholders are working with the internal communication at different levels within the organization. This is creating an effective internal commutation system.

Do the perception of gender issues and perception of internal stakeholder pressure among managers have an impact on strategic renewal? The moderation effect of external stakeholder pressure

The purpose of this study was to examine any potential relationship between  management’s perception of gender issues and strategic renewal, internal stakeholder pressure and strategic renewal, as well as the potential moderating influence of external stakeholder pressure on both relationships. Gender and stakeholder theory, as well as strategic renewal, are important themes in business research, although their intersection has not previously been studied to this degree. This research follows a positivist methodology and utilizes data collected from an online survey given to several hundred corporate employees, the vast majority of whom are managers. The findings show a positive correlation between managers perception of gender issues and strategic renewal, as well as internal stakeholder pressure felt by managers and strategic renewal. External stakeholder pressure was found to significantly moderate the relationship between internal stakeholder pressure and strategic renewal, but was not found to be significant in the relationship between the perception of gender issues and strategic renewal.

Storytelling For Sustainability In Developing Economy Tourism : A Cross-case analysis of Ecotourism Organizations in Cambodia and Trinidad and Tobago

The purpose of this study is to investigate the use of sustainability storytelling in ecotourism organizations in Cambodia and Trinidad and Tobago. These two countries were specifically selected for a cross-case analysis due to their shared characteristics as developing economies. Ecotourism becomes a significant natural resource in driving the economic growth for both countries. A total of ten ecotourism organizations were chosen to participate in this study. The research analyzes three emerging themes. These themes include storytelling for sustainability, contextual factors in sustainability storytelling (media and setting), and perceived impact of sustainability storytelling in each representing country. Furthermore, the research conducts a comparative analysis of these three emerging themes in these both countries. The findings show that ecotourism leaders in both Cambodia and Trinidad and Tobago employ storytelling techniques as a tool to communicate their sustainability narratives, organizations’ missions, and ecotourism initiatives. Stories developed by these leaders are deeply rooted in personal experiences as founders and co-founders of the participating ecotourism organizations. However, a notable difference is the integration of aspirational elements in the storytelling approach. In Trinidad and Tobago, ecotourism leaders utilize various aspirational elements in the stories such as superhero characters, live-action drama, mascot characters, slogans and taglines, comic books, and graphic novels. On the other hand, Cambodian ecotourism leaders have not incorporated such elements due to challenges such as a lack of understanding in storytelling among internal employees, limited human and financial resources, and a lower level of awareness among community-based ecotourism members. In addition, the findings illustrate that storytelling has raised awareness, empowered the communities, and advocated for sustainable responsible tourism. Although positive impact resulting from storytelling is observed, these ecotourism organizations currently do not have appropriate measurement systems to assess actual impact and changes.

Existem diferenciais na ênfase das práticas de gestão nos setores públicos e privados, nos segmentos industriais de manufatura e serviços. Torna-se importante constatar as evidencias dessas diferenciações e tentar explica-las.O objetivo desta pesquisa é avaliar se existe dependência entre as práticas de gestão em SSO, em sinergia com a RSO, e o setor (público ou privado) ou o segmento industrial (manufatura ou serviço) em que as organizações se inserem, segundo a percepção dos profissionais que nelas atuam. A revisão da literatura que envolve a temática abordada possibilitou a construção de um questionário (survey), cuja aplicação foi realizada em uma amostra de 86 profissionais de distintas formações e áreas de atuação. Os dados obtidos foram tratados por meio de métodos, técnicas e ferramentas de estatística descritiva para avaliar a percepção destes profissionais acerca das práticas de gestão em SSO, em sinergia com a RSO, em suas respectivas organizações. Buscou-se verificar a dependência entre esta percepção com o setor e com o segmento industrial em que a organização se insere, através do teste de Qui-quadrado de Pearson ou Teste exato de Fisher. Como resultado, observou-se considerável adesão à estas práticas por parte das organizações. No entanto, esta adesão depende do setor e do segmento industrial em que a organização está inserida. Constatou-se maior adesão às práticas estudadas nas organizações privadas, comparadas com as públicas, e no segmento industrial de manufatura, comparada com as de serviço. / This research was directed to the study of organizational practices of Occupational Health and Safety (OHS), which relate guidelines for responsible management based on Organizational Social Responsibility (OSR) standards and indicators, with focus on the promotion and maintenance of best working conditions to the internal stakeholder. There are differences in the emphasis of management practices in the public and private sectors in industries of manufacturing and services. It is important to note the evidence of these differences and try to explain them. The objective of this research is to assess whether there is dependence between management practices in OHS, in synergy with the OSR, and the sector (public or private) or the industrial sector (manufacturing or service) in which organizations fall as perceived the professionals who work in them. A review of the literature involving the theme addressed enabled the construction of a questionnaire (survey), whose application was performed in a sample of 86 professionals from different backgrounds and areas of expertise. Data were treated by means of methods, techniques and descriptive statistics tools to assess the perception of these professionals about the management practices in OHS, in synergy with the OSR in their respective organizations. We attempted to verify the dependence of this perception with the sector and the industrial sector in which the organization is inserted through Pearson’s Chi-Square test or Fisher's exact test. As a result, there was a considerable adherence to these practices by organizations. However, this adherence depends on the sector and the industrial segment in which the organization operates. It was found greater adherence to the practices studied in private organizations, compared with the public, and industrial manufacturing segment, compared with the service segment.
