Ska du redan gå hem? : Hur chefer inom Investment Banking upplever balans mellan arbetsliv och privatliv / Are you going home already? : How managers within Investment Banking experience work-life balance

Bartold, Catrin, Nordin, Louise January 2018 (has links)

Factors affecting the retention of employees in a global markets division of an investment bank

Kuvarjee, Shirmila 05 May 2014 (has links)
M.Com. (Leadership in Performance and Change) / This research focuses on the factors affecting retention of employees in a global markets division of an investment bank comprising 500 employees. The research is quantitative in nature. Five factors are discussed and used as basis to see which factors contribute the most to retention of employees. These factors are remuneration, the job, the profile of the organisation, organisational processes and leadership style. Sub-factors relating to these factors were identified and discussed by way of a literature review. A questionnaire was compiled based on the five factors and the sub-factors in relation to the retention of employees. A statistical analysis was done using factor analysis, reliability analysis (Cronbach alpha) and descriptive statistics. From the results it can be concluded that employees are satisfied with the physical work environment, the company’s employer brand in the market and the opportunity to learn new skills and develop themselves for further advancement. Employees also feel confident about the leadership team; are satisfied that their co-workers share their expertise and there is teamwork. The one area about which employees differ, is related to remuneration. Based on the results of this study, it is recommended that the employer use its positive employer brand more aggressively to retain employees since overall most employees seem to be happy with the current employment practices

Financial instability and foreign direct investment

Margeirsson, Olafur January 2014 (has links)
Hyman Minsky’s Financial Instability Hypothesis is used to construct two different indices for financial instability: a long-term index (Long Term Financial Instability) and a short-term index (Short Term Financial Instability). The former focuses on the underlying fragility of financial structures of units in the economy while the latter focuses on more immediate developments and manages to follow turmoil – “a financial crisis” – in the economy. The interplay of the indices with each other, with economic growth and with Foreign Direct Investment, both in general and in the financial industry, is probed. In short, we find that long term financial stability, i.e. secure financial structures in the economy or a low level of Long Term Financial Instability, is sacrificed for maintaining short term financial stability. However, more Long Term Financial Instability is associated, as Minsky expected, with more fluctuations in Short Term Financial Instability: market turmoil is more common the more fragile underlying financial structures of units in the economy are. This signals that markets are ruled by short-termism. Economic growth is harmed by Short Term Financial Instability but the effects of Long Term Financial Instability are weaker. The common expectation that FDI activities strengthen financial stability is not confirmed. The relationship found hints rather in the opposite direction: FDI activities seem to cause financial instability. Based on the those investigations and a further empirical work using data from Iceland, Leigh Harkness’s Optimum Exchange Rate System (OERS) is developed further with the intention of solving “The Policy Problem” as described by Minsky. Insights from control theory are used. The OERS, along with public debt management as carried out by Keynes, is argued to have the ability to keep economic activity in the state of a permanent “quasi-boom”. The policy implications are that the OERS should be considered as a monetary policy as it permits a free flow of capital, thereby allowing economies to reap the possible positive benefits of foreign direct investment, while still conserving financial stability.

Short-termism : an investigation of some UK evidence

Patrick, Carol A. January 1997 (has links)
The aim of this thesis is to undertake an empirical investigation into the assertion that UK investors display short-term behaviour. The thesis starts by reviewing the existing literature which comprises a diverse set of explanations of the concept of short-termism. This survey results in, firstly, a more concise definition of short-termism and, secondly, a framework into which the various theories may be placed. The various approaches to short-termism are categorised into two effects: the numerator effect and the denominator effect. The former refers to the underestimation of future cash flows while the latter refers to those cases in which an excessively high discount rate is used. Both these effects result in the present value of a proposed project being reduced. therefore causing the project to be rejected when it might otherwise have been accepted. Although the literature covers many different approaches to short-termism this thesis concentrates only on one aspect of short-termism. namely the denominator effect. Such an approach is advantageous in that it allows the consideration, and possible elimination, of a particular type of short-termism. thus giving direction to future research. By decomposing the discount rate into the following components: a time value of money, a liquidity premium, an equity risk premium and an exchange rate risk premium it becomes possible to distinguish between "true" short-term ism and "general" short-termism. "True" short-termism refers to the existence ofa high time value of money whilst "general" short-termism refers to the use of a high discount rate for whatever reason. whether it be a high time value of money, liquidity premium or equity risk premium. A preliminary investigation into the existence of both types of short-termism is carried out by the comparison of international real rates of return and risk premia as a means of testing for differences in the behaviour of investors across countries. The results of this investigation lend little support to the assertion that UK investors are short-termist, but suggest that if short-termism is present it is in the form of "true" short-termism. Following these results, further empirical analysis is carried out into the issue of "true" short-termism. A key feature of this analysis is the relaxation of the assumption of the rational expectations in both the interest rate and foreign exchange market. The effect of this is two-fold: firstly, ex post and ex ante rates need no longer only differ by a random error, and secondly, a non-zero exchange rate risk premium may exist. Therefore the thesis also derives an ex ante interest rate series and an exchange rate volatility series using the methodology of Mishkin(1984a,b) and a Generalised Autoregressive Conditional Heteroscedasticity framework respectively. Throughout the thesis a parallel hypothesis is considered of whether a distinction could be drawn between investor behaviour in countries with capital market-based financial systems and those with bank-based financial systems. The thesis finds little support, given the assumptions made and dataset used, for the assertion that UK investors are more short-termist than elsewhere and no evidence to support a distinction between investor behaviour across countries.

Mezinárodní daňová optimalizace v investičním bankovnictví / International Tax Optimization in Investment Banking

Blahová, Kristýna January 2010 (has links)
The theme of this thesis is focused on international tax planning with a narrower specification using offshore companies and all on the field of investment banking. The task of this thesis certainly does not an accurate tax analysis of individual taxes paid standardly in the classic onshore countries. On the contrary, the intention is to provide a wider range of options which the international tax planning can offer to us and what are the specifics of individual, for us certainly attractive, countries or in which cases we should already start to think to optimizing the tax in the international context. I will use Czech-Slovak investment J & T group to analysis mentioned above.

Investiční bankovnictví / Investment banking

Tvarohová, Renata January 2014 (has links)
Investment banking is an important constituent of the financial market. As financial institutions, banks have an irreplaceable part in the functioning of the world's economies. Together with fiscal documents and financial markets they constitute the fundaments of the financial system. The financial market is a complicated system of interconnected relations of particular segments of the market, and investment banking is one such part. Its existence makes it possible to shift the savings of financial resources from saving subjects to ones in deficit by means of mediatory activities, which is performed with the help of various kinds of financial instruments, which are called investment instruments. The mediatory function of investment banking is a basic feature which makes a distinction between investment and commercial banking. Investment banks are main mediators that place released resources (savings) into the stock market. As is well known from the inherent laws of economy, the role of investments is crucial for a healthy circulation and functioning of the state economy. Without them the steady economic growth would be impossible. Due to these reasons I decided to analyse investment banking: its development and economic context, as well as the legal basis of these institutions and their activities...

Dopady legislativy na změnu informačního systému banky / The impact of legislation on information system in a bank institution

Jedlička, Václav January 2012 (has links)
This diploma thesis deals with the impact of legislation on information system in a particular bank institution. Based on the proposal of European Market Infrastructure Regulation it identifies areas where the bank institution does not fulfill the regulation requirements. The thesis also tries to suggest existing processes adjustment and guarantee for them the support of information systems. During the existing processes investigation it discovers other weaknesses and suggests solutions leading to their elimination. These solutions would also lead to acceleration and increase in efficiency within the Straightthrough Processing model. The thesis devotes to all points of European regulation which should be fulfilled in the bank institution's point of view. First the current situation and then the solution of the particular point are mentioned. The thesis looks more detailed into central clearing. There are analyzed possible options in the process point of view. The impacts on the information system are specified for the chosen and most appropriate option. In order to secure the compact understanding of investigated issues, the thesis includes relations of European Market Infrastructure Regulation to the BASEL III concept, regulation supervision authorities in the European Union or introduction to functioning and core of financial derivatives.
