Fotoprodução de kaons e híperons em deutério / Photoproduction of kaons and hyperons in deuterium

Lima, Ana Cecilia de Souza 09 September 2002 (has links)
Kaon photoproduction on deuterium was investigated and the differential cross sections were determined using the data obtained in Hall B at TJNAF (Thomas Jefferson National Accelerator Facility). Real photons were produced in the range covered from 0.50 to 2.95GeV. The cross section for kaon production reactions gama(p, K+ ) lambda, gama(p, K+ ) \'sigmaº, sigma(n, K+)lambda- were obtained. The interference structure near the production of lambdaº, predicted theoretically, was revealed. Theoretical model was compared to the cross section obtained and fundamental informations became available in order to improve the consistence of the model existent. At last, lambda(1385) were identified with good resolution conducting to interesting investigation in the future.

The Effects of a Psychosocial Environment on College Women’s Exercise Regulations and Social Physique Anxiety

Alvarez, Ana 05 1900 (has links)
A positive psychosocial intervention comprised of high autonomy support, task-involvement, and caring was implemented in physical activity classes to examine its effects on college women’s basic psychological needs (i.e. autonomy, competence, relatedness), exercise regulations (i.e. external, introjected, identified, integrated, intrinsic) and social physique anxiety (SPA). We hypothesized that at the end of the semester, participants in the intervention group (N = 73) would report greater need satisfaction, more self-determined regulations and less SPA than participants in the non-intervention group (N = 60). At T1 and T2, both the intervention and non-intervention participants reported “agreeing” with experiencing an autonomy supportive, task-involving, and caring environment. Furthermore, both groups at T1 and T2 reported moderate SPA. No significant group differences were found at T1. At T2, significant group differences were observed in the intervention and non-intervention groups’ report of external regulation and intrinsic regulation. The results suggests that group exercise instructors are capable of creating a positive psychosocial environment to enhance students’ intrinsic motivation.

An Investigation of Conceptual Knowledge: Urban African American Middle School Students' Use of Fraction Representations and Fraction Computations in Performance-Based Tasks

Canterbury, Sandra Ann 03 July 2007 (has links)
A relatively large number of 8th-grade public middle school students in the United States, particularly in urban communities, are not performing at acceptable levels in mathematics. One concept that poses significant difficulty for these students and negatively affects their overall mathematics achievement is fractions. Many researchers have attributed these difficulties primarily to traditional fraction instruction that emphasizes procedural rather than conceptual knowledge. Therefore this study was designed to investigate how students use their computational and conceptual knowledge and fraction representations to solve fraction-related performance-based mathematical tasks. Social constructivism was used as the theoretical framework in examining conceptual knowledge related to learning fractions. This qualitative study was implemented in an urban middle school in the southeast. It involved an initial sample of 37, 8th-grade, African American pre-algebra students who completed a fraction interest questionnaire and two fraction pretests. During the implementation period, 34 students in the researcher’s pre-algebra class completed three performance-based tasks, three reflection logs, and participated in an interview after completing each task. Of the 34 students who completed all tasks, three were purposefully selected as the informants for the study. In addition, observations, field notes, and artifacts (student work) were utilized to facilitate triangulation of the data. The findings of the study indicated the informants could compute fractions with an average of 85% of mastery but could conceptualize fractions only to a small extent. This validated prior findings and led to the conclusion that student deficiency with fractions results primarily from their level of conceptual knowledge. In the investigation of the ways in which 8th-grade students use fraction representations, this study found the informants used representations to develop a visual map of their mathematical thinking and reasoning and to check the accuracy of their computations. Therefore, this study suggests, when students’ mathematical learning experiences relative to fractions have not emphasized the use of representations to develop conceptual knowledge, they may not be comfortable with the accuracy of the solutions demonstrated in their fractions models.

Characterizing Forced Communication in Networks

Gutekunst, Samuel C 01 January 2014 (has links)
This thesis studies a problem that has been proposed as a novel way to disrupt communication networks: the load maximization problem. The load on a member of a network represents the amount of communication that the member is forced to be involved in. By maximizing the load on an important member of the network, we hope to increase that member's visibility and susceptibility to capture. In this thesis we characterize load as a combinatorial property of graphs and expose possible connections between load and spectral graph theory. We specifically describe the load and how it changes in several canonical classes of graphs and determine the range of values that the load can take on. We also consider a connection between load and liquid paint flow and use this connection to build a heuristic solver for the load maximization problem. We conclude with a detailed discussion of open questions for future work.

A Dredging Knowledge-Base Expert System for Pipeline Dredges with Comparison to Field Data

Wilson, Derek Alan 2010 December 1900 (has links)
A Pipeline Analytical Program and Dredging Knowledge{Base Expert{System (DKBES) determines a pipeline dredge's production and resulting cost and schedule. Pipeline dredge engineering presents a complex and dynamic process necessary to maintain navigable waterways. Dredge engineers use pipeline engineering and slurry transport principles to determine the production rate of a pipeline dredge system. Engineers then use cost engineering factors to determine the expense of the dredge project. Previous work in engineering incorporated an object{oriented expert{system to determine cost and scheduling of mid{rise building construction where data objects represent the fundamental elements of the construction process within the program execution. A previously developed dredge cost estimating spreadsheet program which uses hydraulic engineering and slurry transport principles determines the performance metrics of a dredge pump and pipeline system. This study focuses on combining hydraulic analysis with the functionality of an expert{system to determine the performance metrics of a dredge pump and pipeline system and its resulting schedule. Field data from the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers pipeline dredge, Goetz, and several contract daily dredge reports show how accurately the DKBES can predict pipeline dredge production. Real{time dredge instrumentation data from the Goetz compares the accuracy of the Pipeline Analytical Program to actual dredge operation. Comparison of the Pipeline Analytical Program to pipeline daily dredge reports shows how accurately the Pipeline Analytical Program can predict a dredge project's schedule over several months. Both of these comparisons determine the accuracy and validity of the Pipeline Analytical Program and DKBES as they calculate the performance metrics of the pipeline dredge project. The results of the study determined that the Pipeline Analytical Program compared closely to the Goetz eld data where only pump and pipeline hydraulics a ected the dredge production. Results from the dredge projects determined the Pipeline Analytical Program underestimated actual long{term dredge production. Study results identi ed key similarities and di erences between the DKBES and spreadsheet program in terms of cost and scheduling. The study then draws conclusions based on these ndings and o ers recommendations for further use.

Can asset mapping be used to gain insight into children's wellbeing

Whiting, Lisa Suzanne January 2012 (has links)
In recent years, there has been an enormous growth in the literature that has focussed upon assets, in other words emphasising the positive attributes of both people and communities; these include children and young people’s developmental assets, community asset mapping and public health, all of which have generated a wide range of literature. Although there has been some consideration of assets within a child health context, this is limited and no literature has previously documented the mapping of children’s assets at an individual level. It has long been recognised that wellbeing is an integral aspect of health. Children’s wellbeing has been the focus of much concern at both national and international levels; this has resulted in the publication of key documents by prominent organisations, as well as the undertaking of a range of research. Despite this, studies have not previously sought to map the assets underpinning children’s wellbeing – this research has addressed this deficit. This study was supported by a theoretical framework that was specifically developed to guide the study. An ethnographic approach and a photo elicitation method were drawn upon to facilitate the gaze through the lens of ‘Activities that I Enjoy’; this in turn enabled the mapping and emergence of assets that underpin children’s wellbeing. Two primary schools in the south-east of England were used to recruit twenty Year 5 children (aged 9-11 years of age). The participants, ten boys and ten girls, were given disposable cameras and asked to take photographs of the activities that they enjoyed. The children’s photographs were integral to subsequent individual semi-structured interviews that sought to gain insight into children’s wellbeing. ii A constant comparative analysis technique facilitated the mapping of assets that underpinned the children’s wellbeing; this process revealed one overall Stabilising Asset as well as eight internal and three external assets. Whilst some of the assets have been previously recognised, others have not; in particular, the study revealed ‘When I Have Got Nothing To Do: Resourcefulness’ as an internal asset that has not formerly been articulated. All of the assets are presented within the ‘I’m Good’: Children’s Asset Wheel [CAW], an original model that provides a new and important insight as well as being an integral component of the initial guiding theoretical framework. As its contribution to knowledge, the study offered a number of key insights including: The presentation of an innovative guiding theoretical framework that not only has the potential to inform future research, but also professionals in relation to the practicalities of asset mapping. Secondly, the study developed and documented a detailed original approach to asset mapping at an individual level; thirdly, the research facilitated the design of the CAW which encapsulates the assets underpinning children’s wellbeing. Appropriate dissemination strategies have been initiated, and will continue, in order to facilitate the study’s contribution to the existing body of knowledge.

How Are Speech Pathologists Involving Parents in Intervention for Phonological Impairment?

Sugden, Eleanor, Baker, Elise, Munro, Natalie, Williams, A. Lynn, Trivette, Carol M. 17 May 2016 (has links)
Research has suggested that speech pathologists (SPs) in Australia involve parents in intervention when working with children with phonological impairment. However, details of what this practice entails are unknown. If parents are considered integral to meeting service delivery challenges regarding recommended intervention intensities, there is a need to better understand how parents are involved and trained to provide intervention. This study addresses that need. An anonymous, voluntary online survey was completed by 335 SPs in Australia who work with children with phonological impairment. Participants answered questions about how they involve and train parents, and the type of home practice activities provided. In addition, SPs were asked to identify barriers they faced when involving parents in intervention for children with phonological impairment. Overall, 96.36% of SPs involved parents in intervention. SPs reported involving parents in a range of intervention tasks, including goal planning, observing sessions, and completing home practice activities. Sixty-eight percent reported training parents to provide intervention, of whom 87.77% indicated that they do not follow a structured training program or approach when working with parents. Of note, 83.9% of SPs strongly agreed that parent involvement is essential for intervention to be effective; however, most SPs reported barriers to involving parents in intervention, notably compliance with completion of home practice activities. Although SPs consider parent involvement to be valuable, they identified several barriers to this practice. This poster will offer practical suggestions for how parent training and parent involvement could be implemented for children with phonological impairment.
