A expressão contramemória foi cunhada por Aleida Assmann (2011), que observa a forma como a literatura constrói uma memória formada a partir de descartes dos arquivos da cultura oficial. Estes descartes nos remetem ao bebop, estilo de jazz muito presente na obra analisada e famoso por sua agilidade que destoa do jazz comercial. A corrente bebop, por muito tempo, foi apreciada por um público muito específico, criando assim uma forma de contracultura. O termo contracultura – cunhado por Theodore Roszak (1972) e, posteriormente, apropriado por diversas manifestações culturais – define culturas que vivem às margens da sociedade e que se opõem à cultura dominante, tida como opressora. O romance Os subterrâneos, publicado pela primeira vez em 1958, trata do envolvimento do narrador Leo Percepeid – codinome de Jack Kerouac – e Mardou Fox, integrante genuina da cultura do bebop jazz, marginalizada e de origens afro-americana. Em meio ao cenário boêmio de North Beach em São Francisco, Percepeid permeia uma cultura que lhe é estranha, visto que este é integrante da classe media branca norte-americana. As diferenças sociais e culturais do casal criam uma constante tensão, relacionada à marginalização vivida por Mardou Fox e a cultura a qual ela faz parte. Este trabalho também busca resgatar parte da herança literária de Jack Kerouac para observar a forma como o cânone se mistura à contracultura presente em seu romance. Acredita-se que essa mistura entre alta cultura e marginalização busque legitimar a contracultura, expandindo o cânone literário e inserindo-a no arquivo da contramemória. ____________________________________________________________________________________________ / ABSTRACT: This study aims to analyze the literary work The Subterraneans, by the North American writer Jack Kerouac, basing on the terms countermemory and counterculture. The expression countermemory was coined by Aleida Assmann (2011), who observes how literature builds a memory containing discharges from the official culture archives. These discharges refer to bebop, a jazz style known by its agility that differs from commercial jazz and that was, for a long period, appreciated by a restrained public, so that created a counterculture form. The term counterculture – coined by Theodore Roszak (1972) and, later, suited to many culture expressions – defines cultures that exist at the margins of society and that are against the dominant culture, seen as oppressive. The novel The Subterraneans was published for the first time in 1958 and deals with the entanglement of the narrator Leo Percepeid – Jack Kerouac’s alias – and Mardou Fox, a genuine member of bebop jazz culture, marginalized and Afro-American rooted. Surrounded by the bohemian scenario of North Beach, San Francisco, Percepeid introduces himself in a culture that is strange to him, as he belongs to a North American white middle class. The couple’s social and cultural differences create a constant tension, related to Mardou Fox’s culture and marginalized lifestyle. This work also seeks to explore part of the literary heritage in Jack Kerouac and observe the way that the literary canon meddles to the counterculture. It is considered that the mixing of high and marginalized cultures aims to legitimate the counterculture, as it expands the literary canon and insert it in the countermemory archive.

Canadian remembrance of the Great War (1914-1918) in the early twenty-first century is often associated with grand gestures at national monuments like the opening of the new Canadian War Museum in 2005 and the restoration of the Vimy Ridge Memorial in 2007. However, these sites of memory, what Pierre Nora terms lieux de mémoire, are not part of the everyday environments of memory, the milieux de mémoire, of most Canadians. In my investigation of three contemporary works of Canadian literature: The Danger Tree by David Macfarlane, Broken Ground by Jack Hodgins, and Unity (1918) by Kevin Kerr, locally-based storytellers describe the continued influence of the Great War on their individual Canadian communities. The fictionalized narrating personas in these three works create what I refer to as bio-geographies: first-person accounts of the narrator’s particular social and memory environments. While the bio-geographers in these three texts lack first-hand experience of the Great War, their writing reflects the continued repercussions of the conflict in the weeks, years, and decades after the 1918 armistice. The Great War differentially affected thousands of communities in Canada and Newfoundland. Constructing a coherent national narrative that accounts for the multiple lived experiences of individuals in communities across North America is virtually impossible. Turning to local representations of the Great War (in the case of the three bio-geographic texts: depictions of communities in Newfoundland, British Columbia, and Saskatchewan) provides a sense of the nation as a diverse landscape of memory with multiple vantage points. Negotiating the complex terrain of self, place, and memory, the bio-geographers in the three works I examine create representations of the past that reveal how sites of memory, lieux de mémoire, come to be firmly embedded in the ongoing lived experiences of comunity members, the milieux de mémoire. / Arts, Faculty of / English, Department of / Graduate

Competition from non-crop vegetation decreases the productivity of conifer plantations across Canada. The objectives of this research were: (1) to develop reliable indices of perennial, interspecific competition; (2) to compare the responses of black spruce and jack pine seedlings to tree and brush competition in northern Ontario; and (3) to identify the silvicultural implications of the responses. An examination of potential components of a competition index considered measures based on hemispherical photographs, fractal geometry, stand maps, and mensurational data from 360 seedling-centred plots for each of the two crop species. Reliable competition indices should be simple formulations which include horizontal and vertical dimensions and which express the amount of competition relative to the size of the seedling. The optimum index was found to be the area of competing canopy on hemispherical photographs, relative to the seedling leaf area. An alternate index, requiring no elaborate equipment, was the sum of the competing stem volumes (relative to the seedling stem volume) of the largest competitor in each quadrant surrounding the seedling. Comparisons of crop tree responses were made using functional growth analysis, replacing the conventional time axis with a competition axis. The relationship between growth and competition was adequately modelled with a power exponential composite function. Jack pine and bare root stock of both species maintained superior growth despite greater sensitivities to competition, compared to black spruce and container stock, respectively. Thus, jack pine or bare root stock of black spruce would outperform the alternatives if tending were delayed, but competition should be removed in all cases to capture the maximum growth potential. The rate of growth decline in response to competition was consistently greatest at the lowest competition levels, indicating that no beneficial effect on growth was provided by a light cover of non-crop vegetation. Allometric analyses indicated that black spruce had a greater morphological plasticity than jack pine. At high competition levels black spruce allocated more biomass to branches and foliage, at the expense of stem and roots. Jack pine demonstrated no such adjustment in allocation pattern, but followed a strategy of stress avoidance through sustained high growth rates. / Forestry, Faculty of / Graduate

This Diploma Thesis focuses on a new alcoholic product in the Czech Republic - Jack Daniel's Tennessee Fire. It examines its popularity amongst consumers, its relation to other products in the range of the brand and to the main competitors of the other brands. For better interpretation of the results there is a questionnaire research. The aim of this work is the image analysis of this product in the Czech market and to offer potential recommendations for the brand in the future which come out of the own author's analysis and the results of the research.

Relationships between jack pine dwarf mistletoe (Arceuthobium americanum Nutt. ex Engelm.) and Armillaria root disease (Armillaria ostoyae (Romagn.) Herink) were examined to determine how these two disease agents contribute to jack pine (Pinus banksiana Lamb.) decline and mortality in the Belair Provincial Forest, Manitoba, Canada. The incidence and extent of Armillaria root disease was strongly related to tree vigor. Dwarf mistletoe infection did not affect either the incidence of Armillaria or the mean percentage of root system colonization within vigorous, declining, and dead classes of trees. However, field observations and other analyses indicate that dwarf mistletoe was primary responsible for jack pine decline and mortality. In dwarf mistletoe mortality centers, Armillaria appeared to act opportunistically, extensively colonizing only the stressed trees. Analysis of distributions of percent Armillaria colonization revealed that rapid root system colonization occurred just prior to, or at the time of tree death.
