Γιαννακάκη, Μαρία 22 December 2009 (has links)
The conservation project at the monastic complex of Saint Lot involved the rescue lifting of one of the six mosaics which paved the basilica as well as the excavation of a second one that was found in hundreds of fragments fallen on the slope. The lifting of the first mosaic and the consequent discovery of fragments of an earlier mosaic floor underneath it, as well as the fragmentary state of the second mosaic gave us the opportunity to observe and record thoroughly the techniques employed in the construction of these mosaics. Characterization of selected mortar samples allowed the determination of their composition, identification of the aggregate and its additives. X-Ray Diffraction, Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, Optical Microscopy and Scanning Electron Microscopy with EDS were the main techniques employed. Mineralogical analyses of tesserae samples, that was employed from other partners of the project, provided information about the provenance of the raw materials that were used. Through detailed observation and analysis, significant information on the raw material selection, preparation of mortars, bedding stratigraphy, method of execution, as well as aspects of tesserae cutting and surface finishing techniques were documented. The variation in the bedding stratigraphy, the composition of the mortars as well as the petrography of the tesserae between mosaics that were executed in different periods contribute in the study of the archaeological context and especially in understanding the succession of the renovation and modification phases of the building.

[en] PICK S THEOREM / [pt] TEOREMA DE PICK

RODRIGO PEREIRA CARVALHO 25 February 2016 (has links)
[en] The study of plane geometry, in particular the computation of areas of simple polygons, is little explored in the classroom. Our aim here is to state and prove Pick s Theorem. We also present sever al examples and more than one proof. Simple polygons (which are not necessarily convex) receive special attention. We also consider some related results, such as the theorems of Jordan and Euler. It is hoped that this re e arch will contribute to the teaching of mathematics in a qualitative way.

Les principes de la propriété intellectuelle en droit français et jordanien : un modèle pour un code palestinien / Principles of intellectual property rights in French and Jordanian law : a model code for Palestinian law

Iriqat, Mohammed 26 March 2013 (has links)
The purpose of this study is to make an objective comparison between the intellectual property right in France and Jordan law in order to extyarct the similarities and differences to establish the basic principles of intellectual property code for Palestine. Activity-Based Costing (ABC) systems within Jordanian industrial companies : factors that facilitate, motivate and create barriers to ABC implementation

Nassar, Mahmoud January 2010 (has links)
The diffusion of Activity Based Costing (ABC) has been researched extensively in developed countries. Research on these issues in Jordan in general and within the Jordanian industrial sector more specifically is limited. The aim of the current research is to contribute to the design and successful ABC implementation in the Jordanian industrial sector. To achieve the aim of the research, the research methodology included both quantitative and qualitative data. The first stage was a quantitative study. The questionnaire survey was developed and the primary aims were to determine the current state of ABC adoption and implementation. The factors that facilitate, motivate and create barriers to ABC implementation were examined. In the second stage, semistructured interviews were used to probe the significant results of the questionnaire survey. The interviews were conducted with 6 companies that have implemented ABC in full and currently using ABC information. The survey findings indicate that ABC implementation among Jordanian industrial companies is quite satisfactory. The rate of ABC implementation is about 50.8%. Within the Jordanian industrial sector, the interaction between the following factors facilitated and motivated the implementation of ABC, namely: top management support, both training and education about the system, higher information technology, increasing proportion of overhead costs, growing costs, including product costs and administrative costs, and an increasing number of product variants. The interviews with financial managers/heads of cost accounting departments are consistent with questionnaire survey findings and both reveal and emphasise the important effect of consultants, professional management/accounting bodies and cooperation between academics and professionals upon implementing ABC within the Jordanian industrial sector. Therefore, it can be concluded that it is not only demand but also supply factors that influence implementation of ABC within the Jordanian industrial companies.

ADAPTIVE DESIGN SOLUTIONS TO ACCOMMODATE REFUGEE SITUATIONS WITH UNPREDICTABLE FUTURE: THE DESIGN OF H.O.P.E REFUGEE CAMP IN JORDAN

Bdair, Ruba 01 August 2017 (has links)
This research aims to find architectural and urban design related solutions to enhance the living conditions of refugees who are trapped in protracted refugee situations. One key issue that could be considered the main problem-generating factor in protracted refugee situations, is the lack of a clear definition for the appropriate deign life-span of refugee camps in general. As an example of that refuge situation, focus within this research is upon the two refugee camp models found in Jordan; the Zaatari camp and the Azraq camp. Both were established in response of the recent civil war in Syria, started in 2011. A comparison between the two refugee camps resulted in identifying the strong points and the shortcomings of the current models. In addition, an assessment of the refugees’ needs is made based on the refugee camp’s design guidelines and the official reports published by the different humanitarian organizations. The above mentioned researched information is utilized to develop and apply an adaptable design solution that aims to overcome the unpredictable future of the refugee situation in Azraq refugee camp in Jordan. The proposal includes a long-term plan that may develop over time and which is divided to three stages depending on the longevity of the refugee camp. Each stage takes into consideration the changing requirements and needs that the refugees develop over time.

Group decompositions, Jordan algebras, and algorithms for p-groups

Wilson, James B., 1980- 06 1900 (has links)
viii, 125 p. A print copy of this thesis is available through the UO Libraries. Search the library catalog for the location and call number. / Finite p -groups are studied using bilinear methods which lead to using nonassociative rings. There are three main results, two which apply only to p -groups and the third which applies to all groups. First, for finite p -groups P of class 2 and exponent p the following are invariants of fully refined central decompositions of P : the number of members in the decomposition, the multiset of orders of the members, and the multiset of orders of their centers. Unlike for direct product decompositions, Aut P is not always transitive on the set of fully refined central decompositions, and the number of orbits can in fact be any positive integer. The proofs use the standard semi-simple and radical structure of Jordan algebras. These algebras also produce useful criteria for a p -group to be centrally indecomposable. In the second result, an algorithm is given to find a fully refined central decomposition of a finite p -group of class 2. The number of algebraic operations used by the algorithm is bounded by a polynomial in the log of the size of the group. The algorithm uses a Las Vegas probabilistic algorithm to compute the structure of a finite ring and the Las Vegas MeatAxe is also used. However, when p is small, the probabilistic methods can be replaced by deterministic polynomial-time algorithms. The final result is a polynomial time algorithm which, given a group of permutations, matrices, or a polycyclic presentation; returns a Remak decomposition of the group: a fully refined direct decomposition. The method uses group varieties to reduce to the case of p -groups of class 2. Bilinear and ring theory methods are employed there to complete the process. / Adviser: William M. Kantor

Oedipus in Ireland : Betrayal and Reconciliation in Neil Jordan’s Sunrise with Sea Monster

Wennhager, Lena January 2009 (has links)
In this essay I argue that the plot in Sunrise with Sea Monster, written by Irish writer Neil Jordan, is based on the Oedipal myth, such as interpreted by Freud and psychoanalyst literary theory. By applying aspects of this theory we discover meanings buried within the novel. The Oedipus situation arises when the main character Donal falls in love with his piano teacher Rose, but so does his father, who decides to marry her. The desire both men have for the same woman creates a conflict of interest, as well as leading to a series of betrayals, of which the worst and ultimate one is of the father, Sam, by the son, Donal. The situation is not helped further by the lack of communication which exists between the two men. When the Oedipal stage is overcome, when both Rose and Sam are out of the picture, this leads to a sort of reconciliation between Sam and Donal. Betrayal and reconciliation are the two main themes and these are governed by the Oedipal framework of the novel. I also argue that the imagery, in particular that of water and what it is connected to adds depth to the novel as well as closely relating to the main themes and the Oedipal background: the diverse aspects of the Oedipal conflict are expressed symbolically, metaphorically etc. in the novel.

Schur-Like Forms for Matrix Lie Groups, Lie Algebras and Jordan Algebras

Ammar, Gregory, Mehl, Christian, Mehrmann, Volker 09 September 2005 (has links) (PDF)
We describe canonical forms for elements of a classical Lie group of matrices under similarity transformations in the group. Matrices in the associated Lie algebra and Jordan algebra of matrices inherit related forms under these similarity transformations. In general, one cannot achieve diagonal or Schur form, but the form that can be achieved displays the eigenvalues of the matrix. We also discuss matrices in intersections of these classes and their Schur-like forms. Such multistructered matrices arise in applications from quantum physics and quantum chemistry.

Luftmakt i Adenviken

Alenlöv, Pontus January 2017 (has links)
How airpower should be utilized for best effect in counterinsurgency operations is widely debated. According to David Jordan the most important contribution of airpower abilities in these situations is through assisting roles. Such as providing enhanced mobility, better observation and a third category including the importance of presence, harassment and the delivery of direct force. This thesis aims to investigate if those abilities proves to be a significant contribution to a modern counterinsurgency in accordance with a theoretical framework based on papers written by Jordan and Derek Read. It does so through a case study research on operation Atalanta. The result of the study indicates that airpower did support the operation in a way that was critical for success in deterring pirate attacks. The most prominent attributes are those of the third category: presence, harassment and the delivery of direct force. The second category was vital as well, the use of airpower provided the operation with intelligence and information through its capability for observation. There is not, however, enough material to completely support the theoretical framework that airpower was crucial in enhancing the operations mobility in operation Atalanta. / <p><strong>Uppsatsen skriven VT 2017 under Termin 4 Officersprogrammet 15-18 med inriktning </strong><strong>mot flyg.
