Promoting Efl Pre-service Teachers

Ayan, Didem 01 February 2010 (has links) (PDF)
The purpose of this study was to investigate the role of electronic portfolio building in development of self-directed learning by fostering reflective thinking through electronic journals and by compelling individual to take responsibility and control of one&rsquo / s own learning in a practicum course among pre-service teachers from the Department of Foreign Language Education, Middle East Technical University. A qualitative case study research method was applied to analyze the data gathered from pre- and post-ICT surveys, pre- and post Self-Directed Learning Readiness Scales, interviews, and the electronic journals and artifacts demonstrated in pre-service teachers&rsquo / web-based electronic portfolios. The data were collected from eight 4th grade undergraduate pre-service teachers enrolled in School Experience course of the English Language Teaching program at METU during 2008-2009 Fall Term. Electronic portfolios, having the opportunity to provide multimedia displays, allow the pre-service teachers to monitor the outcomes of their learning goals and strategies regularly and by monitoring their studies and reflections they review their own work and have a chance to evaluate their learning and teaching process. Essentially, portfolios transfer the responsibility of learning and decision making to the student with its dynamic process / when students are required to reflect on the information they acquire and on how they acquire this information, they begin to accept their learning practice as a process under their control. This study recognizes the notion that information and communication technologies are crucial to teacher education for both learning and teaching / and takes the constructivist stance that using ICTs tools, mainly electronic portfolios in this case, enhances reflective thinking, authentic self-assessment, self-management, and ownership over learning process and facilitates technological competence which all in all foster self-direction in learning.

Therefore, our intention was to contribute to the historiography of Paraíba education, in dialogue with the brazilian production-related research topic. To do this research, we work with the time frame of circulation Journal of Education, which was from 1932 until 1942, the first year it came out the inaugural copy and the second was the year in which the printed published its latest issue, totaling 15 copies and 18 numbers. The main methodological procedures adopted were: documentary research, with reference to the 18 numbers of the Education Magazine and study theoretical framework related to the theme, especially studies on educational printed. The research was carried from the look of New Cultural History. For the analyzes, we use as reference the following authors: Roger Chartier, Michel Foucault, Denice Barbara Catani, José Baptista Mello, Maurilane Souza Biccas, Paula Cristina David Guimarães, among others. Among the various analyzes performed in this study, the Education Magazine as official Paraíba press ran and legitimized knowledge about primary education, teacher training, student, family, among others. The Journal of Education has circulated the modernization proposals Paraiba teaching, trying to establish a new ideas teaching, thus, we find the educational printed Paraiba communication between called Old School and New School, to trigger project a childhood education guided in psychology, biology, in hygienism in moral and civics, promoting, educational practices to civilize and moralize children and, more than that, standardize and discipline bodies and minds.

It is a historical research that uses the analytical strategy of the assumptions of cultural history, which proposes a renewal of objects and sources, as well as the way of approaching them, as recorded by Pesavento, Burke, Lopes and Galvão, among others. The main purpose of this study was to identify which guidelines and medical-hygienist prescriptions for the education of young children were published in the first six decades of the twentieth century. Our focus was the Goiás Journal of Education, a pedagogical publication of great importance to identify proposals and practices of regional and national educational history. The first step of the research was a bibliographical review of hygiene studies and their assumptions in Brazilian childhood education, from the second half of the nineteenth century until approximately the beginning of the second half of the twentieth century. Among the authors referenced are Gondra, Vigarello, Costa, Stephanou, Rocha, and others. Next, we contextualize the referential source of this research, the Goiás Journal of Education, composed of a series of 33 numbers, highlighting the continuities and discontinuities in the dissemination of educational, political and cultural issues, focusing on the diffusion of hygienist precepts. Regarding the use of pedagogical publications as a source in this field of research, we refer to Bastos, Luca, Biccas and others. Finally, we made a clipping of the articles of the journal, showing the diffusion of hygiene precepts aimed at the education of young children. Reaching the end of our research, we can say that the Goiás Journal of Education was one of the vehicles for the dissemination of hygienist precepts among the population of Goiás, and also that medical and hygienic actions aimed not only at health, but also at health education, focusing on the development of habits considered healthy from an early age, thus contributing to the construction of a hygienic culture in the state.
