"On the hole business is very good."-- William Gaddis' rewriting of novelistic tradition in "JR" (1975)

Thomas, Rainer January 1989 (has links)
The thesis examines how the American novelist William Gaddis replenishes the tradition of the novel by way of a parodic subversion of its enabling assumptions. In the face of the subject's on-going marginalization, mimetic narrative appears as an "exhausted" literary form. JR (1975) directs the reader's attention to the complexity of language. In that sense, the novel problematizes the conditions for the existence of meaning in fiction. By means of narrative dissemination, Gaddis points to those anarchic energies in oral speech, which thwart efforts to instrumentalize language. Human beings in JR do not possess a recognizable personality, they are metonymic functions of cultural discourses. Deprived of their origins, they have to cope with an orphaned existence. The author also suspends his controlling functions and becomes a narrative stumbling block through disconcerting intrusions. Thus the text is constituted from the diversity of linguistic material in popular culture.

SMALL VOLUME, FEHER-PATENTED QUADRATURE PHASE SHIFT KEYING, JR VERSION, TELEMETRY TRANSMITTER

Bottenfield, Joe, Moore, Vern 10 1900 (has links)
International Telemetering Conference Proceedings / October 20-23, 2003 / Riviera Hotel and Convention Center, Las Vegas, Nevada / This paper describes the implementation of a Feher-Patented Quadrature Phase Shift Keying (FQPSK) waveform variant that reduces overall design complexity, which in turn results in a telemetry transmitter that provides all the benefits of the existing FQPSK-B waveform, in a 3.0 x 2.0 x 1.0 volume. This variant is referred to the as the FQPSK-JR version. This waveform differs from the “near constant” envelop response of the qualified Herley airborne FQPSK-B telemetry transmitter in terms of the time domain wavelet transition functions and the amplitude scaling term associated with those functions. The end result is a “constant envelop” design, which employs simplified antialias filtering and more efficient digital design techniques.

Bergmann, Ute 31 March 2010 (has links) (PDF)

Writing about Wright : Edgar Kaufmann jr.'s analyses on Frank Lloyd Wright

Wasser, Elise Louise 17 December 2010 (has links)
For many years authors have repeated stories and myths about Frank Lloyd Wright, overstating purported influences and unjustly degrading periods of Wright’s work. Discrepancies in Wright’s own discourses have not made the task of characterizing him any easier. To better understand Wright’s works and influences, the focus must shift to those who have authored the narratives about Wright. Among the most important of these was Edgar Kaufmann jr. [sic]. Other early Wright commentators, such as Henry-Russell Hitchcock, Grant Carpenter Manson, and Bruno Zevi are usually mentioned before Kaufmann, but Kaufmann published more about Wright than any one else, until his death in 1989. Hitchcock worked on twenty-two books and articles about Wright, Manson on nine, and Zevi on seventeen. Kaufmann authored thirty works about Wright, more than Zevi and Manson combined. Kaufmann is generally referred to as the son of Fallingwater, but his Wrightian scholarship and design theory extended far beyond his role in bequeathing his family’s famous retreat. Kaufmann’s writing career spanned over three decades and included more than forty works, with topics about Wright, “Good Design,” skyscrapers, and the museum industry. His writings reveal a complex scholar who at times was led by the trends of his time, and who was not afraid to reevaluate and redefine his past work. From Kaufmann’s first article about Wright in Art News, to his work establishing Fallingwater’s tour program, he communicated Wright’s methods and analyzed his rhetoric. During Wright’s lifetime, Kaufmann followed his wishes for interpreting his work. But after Wright’s death, Kaufmann was swayed by a number of contemporary ideas, such as indeterminacy and systems. Most of Kaufmann’s writings focused on Wright’s later architecture, clarifying his rhetoric, discussing his influences and space, and telling the history of Fallingwater. Kaufmann is a key figure in the narrative about Wright because of his unique perspective as a student, a client, and a friend that no other historian can claim. Deciphering Kaufmann’s writings allows for an examination of one of the major voices behind Wright’s story. / text

A comparative analysis of the ideal of community in the thought of Howard Thurman and Martin Luther King, Jr

Fluker, Walter Earl January 1988 (has links)
Thesis (Ph.D.)--Boston University / Howard Thurman (1900-1981) and Martin Luther King, Jr. (1929-1968) were both Christian pastors and social prophets who made significant contributions to the religious and social life of America and the world. Although Howard Thurman is the lesser known of the two, his life and ministry influenced many individuals (including King) who have impacted American society and the larger world community. Both thinkers were also black Americans whose earliest experiences of oppression based on the coalescence of color and race in the segregated South had a profound impact on their quests and interpretations of human community. Fact, Interpretation, and Theme in the Historical Novels of A. B. Guthrie, Jr.

Stephan, Peter M. 05 1900 (has links)
One can compare Guthrie's fiction with a sampling of the primary source material, to determine in general his degree of historical accuracy. Then one can compare Guthrie's interpretation with the interpretations of some widely read historiographers, to determine points of agreement or divergence. Finally, Guthrie's interpretation of history can be studied in relation to the themes he develops in his fiction.

An Oral History & Literary Review of Edward Blake Jr.: Exploring the Evidence of a Principled Practice

Herrmann, Hans Curtis 08 December 2017 (has links)
This thesis is a study of oral histories and literary records covering the professional development and works of Edward Blake Jr., ASLA, (1947-2010). The study considers Blake’s design principles via newly collected oral histories and a review of his literary record within the continuum of landscape architecture history from 1970 to 2010. Additionally, the study explores Blake’s position within the ecological design community to establish his status as a possible founding voice of ecologically focused landscape architecture practice in the Coastal Plains Region of the southeastern United States. The primary sources include a newly developed oral history collection with questionnaire-based interviews of Blake’s eight colleagues, professional mentors, and collaborators, along with various forms of project and process documentation generated by Edward Blake Jr. and his practice, known as The Landscape Studio. The study concludes with a distillation of Blake’s design principles, lexicon, and contribution to the field of landscape architecture.

Formação e revolução em Caio Prado Jr. e Celso Furtado / Formation and revolution in Caio Prado Jr. and Celso Furtado

Manzatto, Rômulo Felipe 02 March 2018 (has links)
The problematic relation between the works of Caio Prado Jr. and Celso Furtado is one of the most interesting polemics of our historiography. It is known that in the Formação Econômica do Brasil, Furtado\'s main work, there are no explicit references to the work of Caio Prado Jr., even though the influence of the thought of the Marxist historian on the work of the ECLAC economist is more than evident. The issue, far from being pacified, attracted the attention of names like Chico de Oliveira, Paul Singer, Roberto Schwarz and Tamás Szmerecsányi. Beyond the controversy, there seems to be reasonable interest in the broader comparison of the thinking of both. From this point of view, the present work contrasts the authors\' thinking between two well-defined thematic moments, that of their books of \"Formation\", from the mid-1940s and 1950s and the moment of the \"Revolution\", already in the 1960s In this chronological and thematic framework, we seek to locate the authors in the broader intellectual context of which they are part. Communist matrix Marxism, in the case of Caio Prado Jr. and the political economy of ECLAC for Celso Furtado. Then, the comparison is carried out around three broader thematic axes. The first one, regarding the use that they make of the typology of opposites of colonização de exploração e colonização de povoamento. The second, which compares the way they deal with the difficult, and still unfinished transition between colony and nation, which in Caio Prado Jr. acquires the form of \"impasses do inorgânico\" and in Furtado, in the ideas that led to the creation of SUDENE. Finally, their responses are compared in the troubled political context of the 1960s, when the two analyzes converge to defend a Revolution, or Pre-Revolution, seen not as rupture, but as a broader process of social transformation.
