The delinquency of Indian girls on British Columbia : a study in socialization

Neilson, Kathryn Elizabeth January 1971 (has links)
Delinquency is examined in groups of young female offenders from two different cultures: British Columbia Indians and the larger White society. Socialization (Gough and Peterson 1952) is the focus of the study, due to its universal nature. Facets and dimensions of socialization are examined statistically and qualitatively for Indian-White differences in the expression and significance of delinquency for each culture. Several significant findings emerge. Specifically, the reliability of measures used is consistently poorer for Indian subjects. Indian delinquents show more positive attitudes toward family and more pessimism regarding life in general than do their White counterparts. The methods used do not permit adequate exploration of the complexities of Indian-White differences. The implications of the study for future research and for treatment of Indian delinquents are discussed. / Arts, Faculty of / Psychology, Department of / Graduate

Review of the cross-sectional field of outdoor camps, resiliency, and juvenile delinquncy

Safie, Omar Taha 01 January 2005 (has links)
Successful outdoor camp programs are being threatened by decreased funding and increased focus on the control of juvenile delinquents. To determine the success of outdoor camp programs for the juvenile delinquent, it is important to examine the recidivism rates of those who go through the programs compared to those who do not. By properly infusing outdoor camp programs with resiliency education, new programs can be created with even more success. This paper is a literature review of the present state of research in both fields. With the background information presented here, the goal is to become a 'springboard' for further research.

Changes in Personality Traits and Identification in Adolescent Female State School Residents, as a Function of Length of Residence

Thompson, Mary L. 01 January 1973 (has links)
The purpose of this study was to assess the impact of a significant exposure (six months) to a State School environment on selected personality traits and identity factors of adolescent girls. A second objective was to ascertain whether greater change takes place early in the period of residency (three months) or in a later stage. A third aim was to determine whether there is a significant difference in the degree of change between girls showing fewer pathological signs and healthier identity than those who show a greater number of such signs and a stronger delinquent identification.

A follow-up study of children released from child care centers

Cabrera, Tamsel Tack 12 January 1977 (has links)
Concerned by the increase in the average daily populations at Maclaren School for Boys and Hillcrest School for Girls, Children's Services Division has requested research related to children who have been released from child care centers and private institutions. Child care centers were originally developed as alternatives to the state institutions. As children were diverted to various child care centers, the populations of these two institutions decreased, and plans were made to merge the two schools, thus closing Hillcrest. With the increase in populations at both schools, this is no longer feasible. As much time and effort is spent in placing children outside of the state schools, C.S.D. would like to have some measure of how effectively its workers are diverting children from the correctional system. A speculation exists among many C.S.D. workers that youngsters are not staying in these child care centers long enough to benefit from the varied programs the centers offer. With these factors in mind, a research design was developed which would cover these variables: 1. The child's placement 2. His length of stay (including dates of placement and release) 3. His disposition upon release 4. His living situation one year following his release
