The San Joaquin County juvenile offender from adjudication to release : an inquiry into the effectiveness of the juvenile court, the probation department and its detention facilitiesWest, Pearl Steiner 01 January 1968 (has links) (PDF)
Among the questions that drew attention were these. Are San Joaquin County's juvenile delinquents the sane as, or different than those found elsewhere? that happens to the youngster after the police refer him on into the corrections structure? What are the criteria by which decisions are made? Who makes the decisions? What services are offered? What facilities does San Joaquin County have in which to treat the juvenile? What services are offered in the institutions? In view of the current levels of knowledge, is our county doing an adequate job?
Statistics are cited as necessary to delineate the source, nature and size of San Joaquin County's delinquency problem. Internal problems and assets of the Probation Department that affect the juveniles are evaluated, and these include such items as caseloads, personnel turnover and the new Special Supervision program.
Detention facilities will be examined with an eye to adequacy and efficiency. If found necessary, recommendations will be made. It is not anticipated that all of the obvious questions can be answered, but it is anticipated that a study can be produced that will be of some value to the community generally, and to the county government in particular.

Job Satisfaction of Juvenile Facility Directors: Results from a National SurveyFlanigan, Amy Renee 08 1900 (has links)
This study utilizes a national survey to measure the job satisfaction of juvenile facility directors. The prior literature has focused on the experiences of line personnel within the adult correctional system, and this research serves to provide new information regarding this specific population. The current study will address the predictors and correlates of a director's job satisfaction. It is hypothesized that specific characteristics within the organization will predict job satisfaction. Issues regarding staff within an institution and their effect on a director's job satisfaction are the focus. Results indicate
that staff issues significantly contribute to the job satisfaction of a director. Specifically, this research can be used to understand facility director retention, staff and juvenile related issues, and the effect of job satisfaction on criminal justice policy issues.

Panoramic distortions : understanding the culture of girls in a military structured residential treatment facilityHernandez, Jessica, 1982- 16 June 2011 (has links)
Current research on girls and delinquency has brought to awareness the often
stressful and traumatic lives of girls. Furthermore, the last three decades have seen an
increase in the proportion of girls entering the Juvenile Justice System and an increase in
the proportion of girl’s court ordered to attend military structured treatment programs.
Developed with boys in mind, many researchers in the area of female delinquency believe that military structured treatment programs are less effectiveness for girls. Thus,
the goal of the current study is to consider the experience of girls in a military structured
residential treatment facility. Additionally, this study sought to answer the following questions posed by the administrative personnel of this program:
1) Why do staff members report more difficulties when working with the girls?
2) Why are girls more emotionally labile than boys?
3) What changes can be made to the program to increase girls’ success in the
program?
Participants in this study were referred to a military structured residential treatment program. At the time of the study, four girls, ages 14 to 16, participated in the
study. In addition to the girls’ participation, staff members including drill instructors,
program officers, teachers, health professionals, and administrative staff participated in the study. The current study utilized an ethnographic approach to explore and identify information that may be useful in better understanding the research questions. The
Listening Guide Method (Brown & Gilligan, 1992) was utilized to conduct a narrative analysis of the interviews with both the girls and staff members.
Results demonstrated that while in the program, services provided were uneven in both scope and quality. For example, lack of training among staff members resulted in missed opportunities to teach the girls necessary skills that would enable them to tolerate emotional distress while in the program and at home. In order to better meet the needs of
the girls, it is recommended that this program strive to integrate both military and therapeutic programming, and educate and train all its staff members in the delivery of gender-responsive programming. / text

A Delphi Investigation of Staff Development Needs of the Child-Care Personnel in the Juvenile Detention Facilities in the State of TexasBrown, Melvin, 1941- 05 1900 (has links)
This investigation was concerned with the problem that the staff development needs of child-care personnel in juvenile detention facilities in the State of Texas have not been identified and described. The study utilizes the Delphi technique in determining juvenile detention administrators' perceptions of the skills/knowledge required to be a competent detention child-care worker. The assumption was made that detention administrators can supply relevant input to study.

A Longitudinal Study of Juvenile Facility Directors' Job Satisfaction Levels in the United StatesSkertich, Jonathan David 08 1900 (has links)
This national study, focusing on job satisfaction within juvenile facility directors, was conducted by the means of a survey. The study is longitudinal in nature; the survey was conducted in 1995 and 2000. Other past studies have focused on line level employees, guards, and the juveniles, but few have concentrated on juvenile facility directors. Literature on directors is currently lacking, this continuous study will give a better ongoing perspective of their attitudes and beliefs. Findings from this particular study will help to address current concerns inside of the system, starting at the apex. The survey's goal is to correlate factors that have a direct impact on their job satisfaction. Results indicate that staff issues have a dramatic impact on a director's job satisfaction.

Predictors of placement from a juvenile detention facilityBrock, Diane C., Lenz, Anneva E., Houston, Ann C., Munn, Richard R., Parks, David F. 01 January 1971 (has links)
The purpose of this project was to determine whether certain personal, socioeconomic, and court-related factors are significantly related to the differential placement of delinquent and dependent children from the detention facility at the Donald E. Long Home. A stratified random sample was composed of 173 placements of children who were held in detention after a preliminary hearing.
The review of literature revealed that little systematic. Information is known regarding the placement process as it is related to differential placement of children from a detention facility.
A code sheet was developed for recording the information in the children’s records maintained by the court. Fourteen variables were ultimately selected for analysis of their relationship to differential placement. These variables were subjected to three statistical approaches; a descriptive analysis of the random sample, testing of the significance of each variable to the alternatives in placement by either Chi square or analyses of variance, and testing of several variables in combination by discriminant function.
This study was limited by the fact that only demographic variables were tested. Although three individual variables were found to have a high degree of significance in relation to placement, the data as produced within the scope of this research project does not provide an effective placement profile. The need for additional research in the area of the differential placement process is clearly indicated. Suggestions are made for future research.
