Le corps fragmenté : du Künstlerroman au Rouge et le Noir / Fragmented body : From the Künstlerroman to Le Rouge et le Noir

Ferey, Hélène 21 January 2012 (has links)
This work deals with an aesthetics specific to the Romantic Era : the expression through thefragments of the body. For the Romantics the recurrent fragmentation of the body is indeed a solutionto its opacity and the best way to express the real nature of the Whole. The head and the eye are twostrong and meaningful examples used in arts. But the hand is definitely the fragment which bestembodies this aesthetic approach: by bringing the tangible and intelligible together, the hand becomes abridge and the centre of artistic creation.Künstlerroman and Bildungsroman highlight especially well the pregnancy of these aestheticissues both in France and Germany. Therefore Tieck's Franz Sternbald, Goethe's Wilhelm Meister andFaust will be studied in our work as well as seven tales by Hoffmann in order to prove the recurrenceof these aesthetics in various genres such as novels, plays and tales. These three genres are alsorepresented by a French corpus including one of the works of reference in terms of Romantism, LeRouge et le Noir by Stendhal, compared to several short stories dealing with the theme of arts:Sarrasine and Le Chef-d’oeuvre inconnu by Balzac, Le Fils du Titien by Musset and La Toison d’Or byThéophile Gautier. Adding George Sand's Lelia to the corpus allows us to see how this aestheticsinfluenced even one of the greatest successes of its time. At last a few Romantic works featuring thebody as main character such as Frankenstein by Mary Shelley, Fragoletta by Latouche, La Main dudiable by Alphonse Karr and La Main enchantée by Gérard de Nerval reinforce our theory.

Idéias estéticas e filosóficas nos romances O Ateneu, de Raul Pompéia, e Die Verwirrungen des Zöglings Törless, de Robert Musil / A comparative study about Raul Pompeia\'s novel O Ateneu (1888) and Robert Musil\'s Die Verwirrungen des Zöglings Törless (The Young Törless) (1906)

Quintale Neto, Flavio 31 August 2007 (has links)
This is a comparative study about Raul Pompeia´s novel O Ateneu (1888) and Robert Musil´s Die Verwirrungen des Zöglings Törless (The Young Törless) (1906). I suggest these novels could be classified as Künstlerroman (Artist\'s Novel). I work with the aesthetical conceptions developed by each of one of the main characters in these two novels and try to show that both works are based on an idea of life as an aesthetical way of living.

In this dissertation, from the analysis of “Uma biografia para Barbie”, in As meninas da Torre Helsinque (1966), of “Sonhadora”, “Ginny”, “Flapper” and “Clarice”, in Vésperas (2002), both works by Adriana Lunardi (SC, 1964), I investigate the narrative strategies the writer uses in order to enlighten the questions that deal with art and the woman-artist. I locate her discourse in the confluence of three paradigms of gender as well as genre which are placed under tension: the female Künstlerroman, the fictional biography and the short-story. I examine how the writer builds pictures of the woman-artist, being her a historical and officially documented subject or a possible and imaginary being, from the perspective of both the protagonist-artist´s trajectory and of the writer´s intertextual and dialogic processes involved in her écriture. The emphasis on the analysis of the artist´s representation in shortstories by Adriana Lunardi leads to discussions on: the conflict art versus life, the permanent dialogue between memory and artistic expression, the female body, the symbolic process of death and re/birth, the mise en abyme literary constructions and the intertextual games. Due to the bibliographic and hermeneutic character of the present research, throughout the critic and analytic approach to the short-stories besides the theoretical basis I use documental material external to the corpus; some of them belong to the field of history (traditional and official biographies) and some to the literary one (the protagonists´ works). Lunardi´s short-stories, besides innovating in terms of the configurations of literary genres, Künstlerroman and fictional biography, enlarge the frontiers of the studies of gender. The distinct representations of the woman-artist in the short-stories establish the dialogue among a great diversity of texts, fact that allows the female authorship a wider visibility and demonstrates how flexible the framework of the Brazilian literary historiography is.

This dissertation aims at investigating the representation of the female – writer characters Teresa and Briony in the novels Um Beijo de Colombina (2003), by the Brazilian author Adriana Lisboa, and Reparação (2001), written by the British Ian McEwan. The main hypothesis focus on the possibility of female artist representation in Um Beijo de Colombina and in Reparação constitute literary works that break with the fictionalization of womenwriter character discourse in Künstlerroman and Bildunsgroman genres. This hypothesis is based on the fact that on the theoretical framework given by the researchers of those literary forms, the protagonists of both novels do not follow the heroine-artist representation trend because they project themselves beyond gender tensions and obstacles inserted by patriarchal society, benefiting themselves from new facets to exercise their profession. Throughout the course of this study, it is described the woman writer's struggle for personal emancipation and enhancement of female authorship, as well as the representation of women in fiction. The negative images of women impact on the traditional representation of female character writers who venture through the literary art in search for self- knowledge and professional fulfillment. The heroine-artists portrayed in fiction, within the Bildunsgroman and Künstlerroman genres, traditionally face negative destiny in their representations because it is difficult for them to harmonize personal and professional life. The protagonists Briony and Teresa, however, go through different personal and artistic improvement stages, through which they succeed in integrating both private and public life.

Divining for meaning and searching for a female literary identity in Alice Munros Lives of girls and women and Margaret Laurences The diviners / Divining for meaning and searching for a female literary identity in Alice Munros Lives of Girls and Women and Margaret Laurences The Diviners

Ana Luiza Sardenberg 24 March 2014 (has links)
This dissertation aims at investigating how Alice Munro and Margaret Laurence appropriate canonical genres, specifically the Bildungsroman and the Künstlerroman, to subvert them and represent different versions of the female subject through autobiographical novels written by women. The investigation focuses on two novels: Lives of Girls and Women (1971), by Alice Munro, and The Diviners (1974), by Margaret Laurence. In Alice Munros novel, the strategies of the blurring of genres, the idea that reality perspectives change according to the experience and memory of each individual, as well as an emphasis on the development of the protagonist as an individual and as a writer are matters amply discussed. In Margaret Laurences novel, the emphasis on the subjective aspect of memory, the deconstruction of gender stereotypes and the renegotiation of the representation of the female subject to the achievement of an autonomous female identity in life and art are the main issues debated. This dissertation intends to show how the representation of the female identity is redefined by two Canadian writers who appropriated dominant discourses in order to subvert them and then, rewrite their histories

Feminist Practices and Representation of Women Characters in Little Women

Koroleva Sundgren, Jennifer January 2022 (has links)
This essay focuses on Louisa May Alcott's Little Women as a feminist novel and explores the representations of feminisms in the text. First, I argue Little Women is a novel that presents writing as feminist practice from a Künstlerroman perspective, which highlights Jo March's subversive feminism in the time. Next the essay shows how Jo’s gender fluidity helps her reconcile/negotiate her artistic aspirations and social expectations as part of her creative path. Finally, my essay also goes beyond Jo March's character to show how minor characters like the forgotten Beth March and emerging artist Amy March are a reminder of the text’s Künstlerroman focus, how patriarchy attempts to erase women like Beth who do not seem to fit into the stereotypes of the time due to their sickness or gender.

To Play, to Lie, to Conjure : Portraits of the Artist in Selected Works of August Strindberg and Ingmar Bergman

Moa, Marken January 2020 (has links)
In this essay, I study how the artist is portrayed in the works of August Strindberg and Ingmar Bergman. I compare Strindberg’s novels The Romantic Organist (1888) and By the Open Sea (1890) with Bergman’s The Hour of the Wolf (1968) and Fanny and Alexander (1982). It should be noted that I’m focusing on the film manuscripts (“Filmberättelser”) of Bergman rather than the films.  My aim is to study how the works of Strindberg and Bergman correspond in regards to the artist motif. Strindberg’s influence on the works of Ingmar Bergman has been wildly recognized among scholars and critics for decades, but no extensive study has before been made on the subject of the artist.

Hispanic Narratives of the Ill or Disabled Woman: A Feminist Disability Theory Approach

January 2018 (has links)
abstract: Hispanic Narratives of the Ill or Disabled Woman: A Feminist Disability Theory Approach, is a comprehensive study that delves into the topic of the ill or disabled female in the narratives of Hispanic female authors who either have a disability or who have been affected by a chronic or terminal illness, causing debilitation. In order to address this topic, this thesis investigates disability identity by utilizing feminist disability theory by Kim Q. Hall, Rosemarie Garland-Thomson, and Susan Wendell, amongst others, and at the same time reviews current disability policies in both Latin American and Spanish societies. By providing a critical view of this theme from a feminist standpoint, this study places emphasis on the lived experiences that ill or disabled Hispanic women face, doubly marginalized, not only based on their illness or (dis)ability, but also their gender. This in depth analysis of Fruta Podrida (2007) and Sangre en el ojo (2012) by Lina Meruane, Diario del dolor (2004) by María Luisa Puga, Clavícula: (mi clavícula y otros inmensos desajustes (2017) by Marta Sanz, Diario de una pasajera by Ágata Gligo (1997), Si crees en mí, te sorprenderé (2014) by Ana Vives, and The Ladies Gallery: A Memory of Family Secrets by Irene Vilar provides relevant information on societal norms, policies and current debate about healthcare and women’s rights in various Hispanic countries and the United States. At the same time, it emphasizes the disabled female as subject, and investigates the societal perpetuation of disability. This dissertation discusses various concepts from disability studies, such as the illness/disability narrative, corporeal invisibility, normalcy, medical pathologization, stereotyping, and ableism, and investigates them in relation to both chronic and terminal illness or physical and mental disability in relation to the ill or disabled Hispanic female. / Dissertation/Thesis / Doctoral Dissertation Spanish 2018
