The thesis examines child rights protection in Nigeria particularly in the context of problems created by the constitution and culture in establishing an effective child rights framework. Its central argument is that the peculiar constitutional arrangement hinders the effective implementation of the Nigerian Child Rights Act (CRA) 2003. It also argues that cultural perceptions with respect to children also serve as formidable opposition to the recognition of children as rights holders. Having argued along these lines, the thesis proposes certain reform measures that may be adopted in resolving the problems created by these factors and assesses their suitability to the Nigerian society.

Innovation and consumer protection : the case of mobile paymentsEzechukwu, Nwanneka Victoria January 2018 (has links)
The ubiquitous nature of mobile devices coupled with a promise of speed and convenience makes mobile payments an attractive innovation. However, mobile payments also raise concerns with regards to consumer protection. This thesis evaluates how selected jurisdictions address these concerns. The discussion is premised on the argument that mobile payments may prove counter-productive if there are no clear regulatory rules protecting the end users. This is particularly significant for jurisdictions hoping to exploit this service to address financial exclusion problems. The thesis adopts a typology of consumer policy tools which could be used to address the identified consumer concerns. This typology guides the enquiry into how the selected jurisdictions address the consumer issues in m-payments. The purpose of this enquiry is to identify what best practices Nigerian authorities can emulate from the regulatory approach in other jurisdictions. Building on the findings of the enquiry, the thesis puts forward certain recommendations which are intended to address the shortcomings observed in the Nigerian regime.

Chandra X-Ray Study Confirms That the Magnetic Standard Ap Star KQ Vel Hosts a Neutron Star CompanionOskinova, Lidia M., Ignace, Richard, Leto, Paolo, Postnov, Konstantin A. 01 September 2020 (has links)
Context. KQ Vel is a peculiar A0p star with a strong surface magnetic field of about 7.5 kG. It has a slow rotational period of nearly 8 years. Bailey et al. (AandA, 575, A115) detected a binary companion of uncertain nature and suggested that it might be a neutron star or a black hole. Aims. We analyze X-ray data obtained by the Chandra telescope to ascertain information about the stellar magnetic field and/or interaction between the star and its companion. Methods. We confirm previous X-ray detections of KQ Vel with a relatively high X-ray luminosity of 2 × 1030 erg s-1. The X-ray spectra suggest the presence of hot gas at > 20 MK and, possibly, of a nonthermal component. The X-ray light curves are variable, but data with better quality are needed to determine a periodicity, if any. Results. We interpret the X-ray spectra as a combination of two components: the nonthermal emission arising from the aurora on the A0p star, and the hot thermal plasma filling the extended shell that surrounds the "propelling"neutron star. Conclusions. We explore various alternatives, but a hybrid model involving the stellar magnetosphere along with a hot shell around the propelling neutron star seems most plausible. We speculate that KQ Vel was originally a triple system and that the Ap star is a merger product. We conclude that KQ Vel is an intermediate-mass binary consisting of a strongly magnetic main-sequence star and a neutron star.

Development of Sensors and Microcontrollers for Underwater RobotsJebelli, Ali January 2014 (has links)
Nowadays, small autonomous underwater robots are strongly preferred for remote exploration of unknown and unstructured environments. Such robots allow the exploration and monitoring of underwater environments where a long term underwater presence is required to cover a large area. Furthermore, reducing the robot size, embedding electrical board inside and reducing cost are some of the challenges designers of autonomous underwater robots are facing. As a key device for reliable operation-decision process of autonomous underwater robots, a relatively fast and cost effective controller based on Fuzzy logic and proportional-integral-derivative method is proposed in this thesis. It efficiently models nonlinear system behaviors largely present in robot operation and for which mathematical models are difficult to obtain. To evaluate its response, the fault finding test approach was applied and the response of each task of the robot depicted under different operating conditions. The robot performance while combining all control programs and including sensors was also investigated while the number of program codes and inputs were increased.
