Diploma thesis Construstion of Identity in the Emotional Culture deals with possible changes in the construction of identity of man after the fall of the millenium. The thesis stems from Eva Illouz's description of society which states that our present society is unprecedently emotional and rational at the same time. The goal of this thesis is to advocate the intitial statement, that in this organization of society the main source for construction of identity is no longer the consumption of material goods as it put notable social theorists since the second half of the twentienth century. I do not state that this remarkable era is fully over now, but I would like to point out, that consumption of material goods is loosing its strength in the process of identity construction due to the overall increasing living standards and mainly due to the fragmentarization of lifestyles. Considering the unprecedently high level of penetration of our society with emotion I consider them to be the new source of identity creation.

Given the breadth of the concept of new capitalism and possible topics that present themselves here, the main objective of this work is especially presentation of new capitalism as reflected in sociological literature and reference to its highly efficient nature. The work is also a reflection on key topics opened by leading theoreticians of contemporary capitalism. Using Weberian sociology, the work seeks to capture the development of capitalism and to grasp new contemporary capitalism. The development of capitalism is described by the development of three important aspects that appear early in modern capitalism which are important during its whole history up to the present. It is the development of the phenomenon of work, consumption and time. For these three phenomena, the presented work deals in particular with their tendency to become increasingly more efficient. Efficiency is part of the rationalization process; the work uses a more suitable term for contemporary Euro-American society - effectivization (efficiency boost of society), due to its ubiquity and topicality, and also due to the fact that current changes are being legitimized under the designation of efficiency. In this paper I try to analyze all circumstances and threads that led to voucher privatization. I try to analyze factual historical events like for example certain motions in the Civic Forum (Czech: Občanské fórum) within the frame of corporate processes. I observe the shift of power between the majority of citizens and elite and question the legitimity of decisions the leaders of the revolutionary movements make. The power shifting from an individual onto the society served me as an indicator for searching the relations that could had led to the voucher privatization. I try to understand the circle of disidents around Václav Havel and the circle of reformists around Václav Klaus from the sociological perspective and try to apprehend these from tin the light of their organization and opinion coherence. Ideological data of these two groups are compared with the meaning of the public; moreover, I do not restrict myself just to the time after the revolution. I pay attention also to the pre - revolutionary roots of certain social circumstances that influenced the public. I try to find the continuity between the time before the revolution, during the revolution and after the revolution. Naturally it made sense to allude often examples from the history of revolutionary movements. I analyzed the rhetoric...

Die vorliegende Magisterarbeit beschäftigt sich mit der bemerkenswerten Renaissance des ›Geistes des Kapitalismus‹ als Kategorie sozialwissenschaftlicher Untersuchung. In ihrem Buch »Der neue Geist des Kapitalismus« greifen Luc Boltanski und Ève Chiapello bereits im Titel auf Max Webers religionssoziologische Schrift »Die Protestantischen Ethik und der Geist des Kapitalismus« zurück. Dieser zentralen Bezugnahme geht die vorliegende Arbeit mit Hilfe eines Konzeptionsvergleiches nach. Auf diese Weise werden die komplexen Beziehungen zu Weber, wie auch die Akzentuierung eines ›neuen‹ Geistes und damit einer spezifischen Differenz sichtbar. Über eine Rekonstruktion und kritische Betrachtung der zentralen Schlüsselbegriffe – Geist, Ideologie und Kapitalismus – und der beiden Theoriemodelle, werden wissenschaftsgeschichtliche und theoretische Hintergründe diskutiert. In der näheren Untersuchung zeigt sich, dass sich die ›Wiederbelebung‹ des kapitalistischen Geistes innerhalb von Boltanskis und Chiapellos Transformationsmodell als eine Erneuerung und Rekombination des Weberschen Instrumentariums in ein verändertes theoretisches Verständnis beschreiben lässt. Anknüpfungspunkte sind für die Autoren dabei auch seine herrschaftssoziologischen Überlegungen. Die These von einem neuen Geist ergibt sich hingegen aus einer Perspektive, die ideengeschichtlich Abstand nimmt von Webers Verständnis der Moderne als Rationalisierung. / This thesis investigates the remarkable renaissance of the ‘spirit of capitalism’ as a category of social scientific research. As apparent even in the title of their book, “The New Spirit of Capitalism”, Luc Boltanski and Ève Chiapello draw inspiration from Max Weber’s study in the sociology of religion “The Protestant Ethic and the Spirit of Capitalism”. By comparing the concepts found in these two studies, the present work investigates this crucial linkage, shedding light on the complex relationships to Weber’s work, as well as the underlining of a ‘new’ spirit and thus a specific difference. Beyond the reconstruction and critical examination of the key concepts – spirit, ideology and capitalism – and of both theoretical models, I also discuss their background in terms of the history of science and from a theoretical perspective. Close study reveals that the ‘revival’ of the capitalist spirit in Boltanski and Chiapello’s model of transformation involves the renewal and reconfiguration of the Weberian toolkit within a modified theoretical framework. The authors’ points of contact with Weber include his sociology of power. The idea of a new spirit, meanwhile, arises from an intellectual perspective that moves away from Weber’s understanding of modernity as rationalization.
