Reading Strategies : a study on pupils' use of strategies when reading fictional texts

Galica, Majlinda January 2007 (has links)

Abstract

This study is based on empirical studies and the approach to this has been interviews with a group of pupils. The study investigates the use of reading strategies among pupils. The aim is to investigate how the pupils use different reading strategies in order to overcome problems that occur when reading fictional texts. In addition, the pupils were also asked some questions about their reading habits and attitudes towards reading.

Research has shown that pupils who are introduced to different reading strategies are better readers than those who are not. Reading strategies help the readers make literary texts more comprehensible. As a result of this study, it is shown that there are reading strategies that the pupils are familiar with. These strategies are of importance, since they are part of the pupils’ learning process and help them increase their reading comprehension. They also lead to the fact that the pupils gain and widen their knowledge. However, this investigation has also shown that there are important reading strategies that the pupils did not use in this study. There can be different factors that have affected the outcome of this. Therefore, it is difficult to determine whether the pupils are familiar with these strategies or not. Moreover, the pupils argued that they seldom read fiction in school and those times they read, it was literature that they did not like.

Inför den Andre är jag dum : om dumhet, etik och kreativitet i Samuel Becketts pjäs Slutspel

Helsing, Sophie January 2006 (has links)

This study constitutes an attempt to bring the notion of stupidity into relation with ethics and creativity, through a reading of Samuel Beckett's Endgame. Employing Emmanuel Lévinas' theories on ethics - the responsible responsiveness in regard to the Other and the concept of the Face - the objective is to demonstrate how stupidity, conceived as lack of control and knowledge, functions as a precondition for the ethical relation between humans, as well as that of the individual to her creativity.

Issuances and Repurchases: An explanation based on CEO risk-taking incentives

2013 April 1900 (has links)
Abstract: There is an ongoing debate on whether risk-taking incentives align risk-averse managers’ interests with those of shareholders or whether such incentives lead to excessively risky firm and leverage policies. In this study, we shed light on this debate by using CEO risk-taking incentives, measured by the sensitivity of CEO wealth to changes in stock return volatility (Vega), and explain how Vega affects firms’ security issuance and repurchase activities. In general, we find that a higher Vega increases (decreases) the likelihood of debt issuance (share issuance) and it decreases (increases) the propensity of debt retirement (share repurchase). However, in high-levered firms, the positive effect of Vega on debt issuance and the negative influence of Vega on debt retirement are diminished. One the other hand, for equity issuance and repurchases, high leverage does not seem to alter the impact of Vega. These findings have three main implications: 1) in general, CEO risk-taking incentives (Vega) do affect the financing decisions of firms by increasing firms’ degree of leverage, (2) when existing leverage is high, CEO risk-taking incentives do not seem to induce CEOs to take excessive financial risks through debt issuance, but such incentives encourage them to continue repurchasing shares that would lead to even higher debt ratios and non-operational risks, and (3) firms with high Vega do not seem to adopt target debt ratios. Sociokulturni aspekti amaterske pornografije na internetu / Socio-Cultural Aspects of Amateur Pornography on the Internet

Filipović Branislav 06 July 2016 (has links)

7
Analitičko dešifrovanje složenih veza između pornografskih praksi “običnih ljudi” i složene strukture “umreženog društva” polazi od epistemičkog polja sociokonstrukcionistički orijentisane sociologije seksualnosti, dok se na užem metodološkom planu predmetnog specifikuma istraživanja izdvaja upotreba kritičke diskurzivne analize.

/
Contemporary discourse of amateur pornography on the Internet eludes traditional interpretative schemes that associate "home" sex videos with the sex industry business. This research is based on web sites with available amateur pornographic production. In the heart of the scientific interest of the work are pornographic materials and practices of “ordinary people” in the virtual domain of cyberspace.
The research is based upon the premise that the amateur pornography is specific sexual discourse. Pornography is seen as almost predominant mode of western inaugurating narrative on sex. At the same time specific research attention is given to amateur rearticulating of pornographic regime, whereby amateurism is defined as a social register of daily practices based on the act "of love".
Internet is the best-known computer network system, decentralized and relatively free media technology network of communication, without hierarchy on a global level. It is a techno-social platform of "creative appropriation" of pornographic discourse by "ordinary people", as well as transfer of amateur pornography into the social phenomenon of global proportions. Social use of Web 2.0 is the core condition of possibility of amateur porn discourse proliferation and globalization.
The central hypothesis of this work is that amateur pornography on the Internet is a relatively new type of narrative on sex and sexuality. The research points out that “ordinary people” pornographic practice is not of financial but rather of a sexual nature. Following this sense problem of the research is reflected in the specification of amateur pornography as a discursive discontinuity, a social fact that within the framework of postmodern culture in a relatively short time, pornography has not being considered exclusively in prior way.
The research points to the social importance that current remodeling of representational politics of sex entails in terms of sexual interactions and sexual identity of its practitioners and / or protagonists and in this sense starts with the main theoretical assumption on the social nature of sexuality, socio-cultural conformation of the world of "nature". One of the central research problems could be formulated as a dilemma whether amateur productivism of enjoyment fabricate sexual entities, such as sex industry, or the alternative mode of discursive designation procedures of "real" sex also legitimize new procedures of identity self-formation and direct action of confessional "technologies of the self".
Examination of amateur pornography socio-cultural aspects on the Internet is structured on several interpretative levels and is done through analytics of phenomena context, materially-affective level of practitioners and users, pornographic representations, consumer conformation of cyberspace, gender symmetry within the framework of representations and user groups, virtual communitarianism among pornographic practitioners and identity policy of sexual confession.

Aktivizace seniorů s demencí v pobytových zařízeních / Activating the elderly with dementia in residential homes

Zelená, Zora January 2013 (has links)
In the theoretical section we have focused on the process of ageing and made a geographical and statistical assessment. The base was our country's legislative framework for providing care to the elderly with dementia, the issue of the illness of dementia, its causes, as well as the approach and care provided to people with dementia. We drew from the terminological definitions and theoretical resources for employing elderly people with dementia. We have made a note of the philosophical and psychological source. We lay emphasis on information concerning the possibilities of employing elderly people with dementia and their activation. We have followed theoretical resources which, in employing these people, are especially constructive for the users, providers and above all for the family. In all the items observed we respected the limit given by the diagnose of dementia. In the practical section, we have paid attention to already existing activities employed in residential homes for the elderly with dementia. We give a list of some types of homes where people with dementia are placed and where a survey was made. We see the chief asset of the master's thesis in creating a questionnaire, describing the administration and evaluating the gained information on employing the elderly with dementia. We have...

Strategie zvládání stresu u plavců různé výkonnosti / Strategy of dealing with the stress of the swimmers with different sport capacity

Půlpánová, Bohdana January 2015 (has links)
Title: Strategy of dealing with the stress of the swimmers with different sport capacity Aim of the work: This diploma thesis is aimed to assess the strategy of dealing with stress of selected swimmers' groups. The recreational swimmers regularly practising swimming and the competitive as well as elite swimmers undergoing a regular training were the selected subjects of examination. Methods: In this work, there was used a SVF 78 questionnaire method with the electronic data collection. The questionnaire was processed through tabulation and written description. We were seeking to find the structure of stress dealing of the swimmers' groups and to find differences in strategies of dealing with stress of the particular groups as well as potential differences from the normal values. Results: As the statistic interpretation of the sum total of negative strategies demonstrates the strategies are more reflected in the weaker swimmers, both the female and male recreational ones. Within the positive strategies the diversion from the normal values was higher both for men and women. A growth of variability of dealing with stress situations along with a decreasing swimming performance is apparent at both men and women (higher values of the standard deviation). In total, men use the strategy "control of the...

Elektronické obchodování s mezinárodním prvkem: jurisdikce státu a koncept směřování obchodní činnosti na internetu / Electronic trading with an international element: the jurisdiction of the state and the conception of business activities on the Internet

Vondřich, Lukáš January 2012 (has links)
INTERNET BUSINESS TRANSACTIONS WITH AN INTERNATIONAL ELEMENT The recent developments in technology have raised new forms of electronic communication and business strategies on the Internet, in particular the direct e-commerce operated through dynamically generated websites. As a consequence, the suitability of traditional legal norms has been challenged, including the rules governing jurisdiction. The law therefore tries to respond by adoption of new legal concepts and principles or adaptation of the old ones. One of them is the concept of directing business activities, which was incorporated into EU law in relation to the special jurisdictional rules protecting the consumers of the member states under the Brussels Regulation. Accordingly, the aim of the thesis is to characterize the nature of the concept of directing business activities under the article 15 of the Brussels Regulation, as well as to identify the relevant criteria as to its fulfilment, all in the context of the disputes arising from the consumer contracts concluded as a result of the business activities directed towards the consumers of a member state on the Internet. The first section of the thesis deals with the traditional basis of the state's sovereignty and jurisdictional rules, whereas the second section identifies the specific nature...

Hostitelská specializace a druhová diverzita řasníků rodu Stylops (Strepsiptera) / Host specialization and species diversity in Strepsiptera of the genus Stylops

Jůzová, Kateřina January 2012 (has links)
The twisted-wing parasites (Strepsiptera) are entomophagous insect order with cosmopolitan distribution. There are about 600 known species up to date. In spite of this, they have very broad host spectrum. Strepsiptera parasites in seven insect groups (Thysanura, Blattodea, Mantodea, Orthoptera, Hemiptera, Diptera, Hymenoptera). The mutual relationship between genera or even between species are not known, except for the species list and the host specification. Moreover, there is an anambiguous use of their species concept. Some authors consider Strepsiptera as the specialists and they match almost every host species with one separate strepsipteran parasite. The opposite concept is to consider strepsiptera as the generalists. The presence of the crypctic species also affect our understanding of the diversity of Strepsiptera. Therefore, the knowledge of Strepsiptera phylogeny provide us the important information about species diversity of studied group as well as about their coevolution with their hosts. On the basis of molecular analyses of three genes constructed the phylogeny genus Stylops. This genus has the wider spetrum of the host species from other strepsipterans of Stylopidae, It is obvious, that strepsipterans of genus Stylops are mainly specialised on their host subgenus. There was detected two...

Vliv těžkých kovů na sacharidový metabolizmus rostlin / The effect of heavy metals on plant carbohydrate metabolism

Kofroňová, Monika January 2013 (has links)
Arsenic is an element which belongs to metaloids. Contamination with arsenic is a problem all over the world. Basically it is a part of Earth's crust, but with anthropogenic activities it could overspread into soil, water and air in large scale a thus it could mean health hazard. Fytoremediation is kind of environment decontamination, which is quite effective and cheap as well. Publications about arsenic and its influence on plant metabolism are mostly focused on important crop plants like rice. Rice is mostly used for experiments and questions on anatomical and morphological changes are widely being solved by these experiments, but it has only insignificant relevance for fytoremediation. There are only few publications about arsenic influence on carbohydrate metabolism, thus little is known about this problem. That is why I have decided to study this topic more deeply and get more information about carbohydrate metabolic changes under influence of arsenic and partly also under influence of mercury, because information about influence of mercury are completely lacking. My experimental material includes tobacco plant, tobacco tissue cultures and horseradish hairy roots cultures. Accumulation of starch and soluble carbohydrate spectrum and content was determined by HPLC. Furthermore arsenic influence...

Estimation of Carbon Dioxide emissions from forest soils based on CO2 concentrations

Dennis Wilson, Dennis January 2017 (has links)
Forest soil is an important source of atmospheric CO2. Emission of CO2 from soil is the result of respiration of plant roots and soil organisms (Autotrophic and Heterotrophic respiration). This soil CO2 emission has a variation throughout the year with maximum emissions being in the summer. However, the seasonal variation affected by the external factors is not fully known. The aim of this thesis is to analyze a relationship between concentration of CO2 in the soil-atmosphere and CO2 emissions to the aboveground atmosphere. When knowing the relationship between CO2 concentration in the soil-atmosphere and the emission of CO2 from the soil atmosphere, a function (equation) can be established. Usually, the best fit is considered to establish the relationship. With the equations obtained, it is possible to calculate CO2 emissions using data different projects, where only soil-atmosphere CO2 concentrations were determined. Using the relationships, emissions rates in different soil types and in forest transect have been analyzed for a large number of samples. The effect of nitrogen deposition on CO2 emissions and seasonal variation of CO2 emission has also been studied. The sampled sites chosen for this study were located in different parts of Southern Scandinavia and Germany. A closed chamber was used to measure CO2 emission from soil. Soil CO2 concentrations were measured at every station and the equations were established. Finally, these relationships were used for analyses and comparison of the sites. An equation (best fit) obtained was used to calculate the emission values of CO2. The soil texture had a great influence on the CO2 from the soil besides the atmospheric pressure and temperature variations during the seasons. It is concluded that, therefore the soil texture and had a great influence on the CO2 emission from the soil besides the atmospheric pressure and temperature variations during the season. When knowing the equation between CO2 concentration and emission for a special type of soil, it is possible to estimate emissions based on CO2 concentrations. Therefore large scale sampling of CO2 concentrations could be done and this will facilitate the inventories carried out in e.g. global change studies.
