The ability to communicate is a basic characteristic of man. Communication therefore fills an important and central place in Religious Instruction. Today communication is a problem in all spheres of society and particularly in Religious Instruction. The fundamental cause of the problem of communication is the disturbed relationship between man and God caused by the original sin. The result thereof is a distortion of all human communication. Through Jesus Christ man has obtained the opportunity to restore his relationship with God and thus the possibility of better human communication. This possibility only becomes reality when the individual accepts Jesus Christ is the foundation for true communication. Before true communication can take place both the child and the teacher must be in gear with God's Word. The most important requirement for communication in Religious Instruction for both teacher and child is that they must be Christians. The number of non-Christian children in schools is increasing. This brings a new facet in Religious Instruction which suggests evangelization, and requires a new approach in respect of the syllabi, textbooks, training of teachers and classroom teaching. In order to communicate with the child one must know and understand him. The intellectual level, the environment and the mental attitude of today's child is in many respects totally different to that of the child of previous generations. In order to adapt to the child of today a new approach in Religious Instruction is necessary. The present selection and arrangement of the subject matter in Religious Instruction is outdated and needs to be replanned. It must meet the actuality-requirements of the modern child and society. Communication has a central place in every aspect of Religious Instruction and therefore the entire method of Religious Instruction must be based om communication. However, at present this is not always the case. Thorough planning, training and presentation in Religious Instruction is essential, but our trust must not be therein. True communication is the work of God, and the true strength in Religious Instruction is the strength of God. What we actually seek and need in our work is God’s blessing. / Thesis (MEd)--PU vir CHO

During 1913 arrangements have been made for the hygienic inspection of school children in primary schools, in Transvaal, Dr C. L. Leipoldt was appointed. Medical inspection started in April, 1914, and discontinued, owing to the outbreak of the war in August, and was resumed in October 1915. In 1918 the scheme of inspection was organized on a sound basis, but was interrupted by the influenza epidemic. In 1919, Dr Leipoldt, was seconded to the Cape, and the service was carried out by Drs Cleaver and Elias. For private reasons, Dr Leipoldt resigned at the end of 1922. Dr J. A. Kieser, joined the service in 1922 and retired at the end of 1948. After various temporary appointments, Dr F. Z. van der Merwe was appointed on the 23rd of July 1951, and retired on the 10th of December 1954. Dr c. E. Theron has been appointed as his successor as from January 1955. During 1958 a Commission of Enquiry was appointed to inquire into the efficiency of the school medical service. In 1959, extensions of the service and the provision for more satisfactory accommodation were held in abeyance, awaiting the proposed transfer of the School Medical Services to the Department of Hospital Services. The expected transfer did not eventuate in 1960 and the work continued as before. On 1st April 1961, the School Medical Service as a whole was taken over by the Department of Hospital Services. The buildings, equipment, etc. were also tranferred. In future Dental Service would no longer function as part of the School Medical Service, but would continue to exist as a separate section under its own head. The nurses are, engaged exclusively in service to schools. All treatments and arrangements are now controlled by the hospitals. The old Roman opinion that a sound mind dwells in a healthy body (Mens sana in corpore sano) also comes to its own right in the Transvaal Educational System. / Thesis (MEd)--PU vir CHO

This investigation determines the extent to which Vocational Guidance for junior secondary gifted pupils is effectively administered in the Transvaal. Authoratative literature on Vocational Guidance for the gifted child serves as theoretical background. The characteristics, needs and developmental possibilities of the gifted child are investigated in terms of a vocational guidance programme. The function of the home, school and "world of work" regarding the gifted child's vocational education and guidance are considered. The emphasis, however, is placed on the role of the school, and in particular the role of the Head of Department: Educational Guidance; subject teachers and the Educational Advisor: Vocational matters. In the empirical investigation, a questionnaire was completed by Heads of Department: Educational Guidance, in a number of Afrikaans-medium and double-medium Secondary Schools. The SAS computer programme is applied to determine the average of the responses for each question. The results of the investigation indicate that certain aspects of the existing Vocational Guidance programme are effective. There are however, a number of areas what deserve more attention, and possibly need to be revised. For the Vocational Guidance programme to be really effective, the existing programme needs to be implemented maximally, while comprehensive involvement of a committed teaching staff is essential. The aim of this research is to determine the therapeutic possibilities in music and books, in group work with middle aged deprived children. Deprivationwith children is an encompassing problem which social workers daily grapple with. A lack of sufficientknowledgeabout deprivationand sufficientknowledgeon the way inwhich to solve the problemmakesit essentialto do researchon the subject. Literature analysis and an empirical research are the two methods used in this study. The literature analysis focuses on the characteristics of the child client, the value of play for the child and the different ways of playing. This is followed by an explanation of the development of the normally developed middle aged child compared to that of the deprived middle aged child. The therapeutic possibilitiesof music and books is also discussed. Experimental research was used for this empirical research. An experimental group and a controlled group was compiled out of deprived middle aged children. Measurements were taken before and afterwards according to an adapted Hudson scale. Music, books and other therapeutic resources were used in the group work with the experimental group. The hypothesis states that the therapeutic use of music and books in work with groups amongst deprived middle aged children results in improvements of behaviour and relationships. The empiricalresearch proved that the therapeutic use of music and books lead to the improvement of behaviour, such as co-operation and consentration and to the establishmentof a therapeutic relationship between the group members and group leader. / Thesis (MA(MW))--PU vir CHO, 1994

Gifted pupils in South Africa are presently attending special programmes designed to) realize the individual pupil's particular potential. The library plays an important part in (this, being required to put sources of information at the disposal of gifted children. The library as an institution thus plays a very important supporting role in the total education of the gifted child by developing his library reference skills, media experience and research methods. The only restriction on these children should be their own restrictions, and not the non-availability of information. If these needs for information can not be completely satisfied, it could contribute to underachievement, frustration and underdevelopment of the pupil's potential. This study is intended as a contribution to the knowledge of the information problem of the gifted pupil. The Transvaal Education Department (TED) created a special need for information sources by identifying gifted pupils as a special group. The question that arises from this is: a) how does the TED itself provide for the satisfaction of the information needs of this identified group, and b) what other institutions exist that can and are willing to provide in the needs for information of the gifted pupil? The information requirements of this special group of gifted pupils may be described as follows: From the syllabi of the Extra-curricular Centre for Gifted Pupils, a unique need for information arises. The programmes themselves do not cover school subjects and the school library does not specifically acquire sources covering the themes of the programmes. The level of difficulty and the themes themselves are more extensive than the information usually available in a school library . It must therefore be determined what the actual information requirements of the gifted pupil are, to what extent the existing facilities could be developed and which libraries may satisfy the specific needs for information in order to support the educational programme for gifted children. Comparative and empirical research conducted in Potchefstroom and Heidelberg (West Germany) was undertaken to establish what the information needs of gifted children are and what library facilities were available for the satisfaction of those needs. In Heidelberg it was found that gifted children had access to a wide variety of different libraries and their facilities. In Potchefstroom, however, libraries, including school media centres, are not as readily accessible to gifted pupils and no special provision is made for their information needs. Web based assistance for parents to help children and adolescents deal with the effects of economic instability in the family / Lene Janse van Rensburg

The global financial crisis has proved to have had a significant impact on countries worldwide and South Africa was not spared of this global phenomenon. The ecological systems theory, family systems theory and gestalt field theory accentuate the impact a change within the environment can have on interconnected systems and it is therefore argued that the global unstable economy can have a significant impact on families and children. Literature indicates a vast amount of confirmation on the impact of the financial crisis on already poverty stricken areas. On the contrary, less focus is offered on the impact of the financial crisis on families within middle to upper class communities. Preliminary research confirms that although the basic needs of these families (such as food and shelter) have not been affected, significant change with regards to luxuries and expenditure patterns is present. Due to the fact that parents within families are also faced with financial difficulties, these changes are not facilitated and discussed with children and adolescents, causing unresolved emotions and uncertainties. This research was therefore aimed at the development of web based assistance for parents. In addition to the set aim of this research, the study arrived at findings that indicate and emphasise the important contribution of this study. Intervention research as research method was used in the conducting of the study. The developed web based assistance proved to serve as a functional tool for parents in addressing financial issues with their children and adolescents. It also raised parents’ awareness of the impact that a change in finances in the family can have which empowered the parents as well. It was also significantly noted that the website can be utilised within an educational setting which enhances the applicability of this study. The developed assistance contributes to society as it serves as a cost effective, accessible means of providing parents with practical guidelines and activities to help their children and adolescents deal with the effects of economic instability within the family. / PhD (Psychology), North-West University, Potchefstroom Campus, 2014
