2015_IgorEduardoJesusMagalhaes.pdf: 1798713 bytes, checksum: a29b9cad6b2b666ae001e17f4b10ad0a (MD5) / Objetivos. ______________________________________________________________________________________________ ABSTRACT / Objectives. The aim of the study was to investigate the functional and electrophysiological responses of the soleus muscle in physically active men, influenced by the use of Kinesiotaping (KT). Methods. Twenty nine volunteers participated in this study, all submitted to the application of KT in three different conditions: Baseline (BL) - without the KT; ACTIKT - with the KT in activation; INHIKT - with the KT in inhibition. The conditions were randomized for all participants. The experimental design consisted in the performance of 3 sets of maximal isometric voluntary contraction, with 5 s duration. After the strength evaluation, the H reflex was evoked, consisting in the stimulation of soleus muscle through tibial nerve. Thirty-two electric discharges were used, with 2-4 seconds interval between then. The torque values in the intervals of the rate of torque development (RTD) (0-30, 0-50, 0-100 and 0-200), the parameters of the H reflex (Hmax, H-Threshold, slope, current at threshold, current at 50% and current at Hmax) and the predicted values related to the superposition of the conditioning and control curves (H@Threshold, H@50% and H@max) were calculated in a Matlab subroutine. The values related to the reflex amplitude were normalized by the Mmax amplitude. The current values were normalized by 50% of the current to evoke the Mmax. After the Shapiro-Wilks test, the Friedman test was used, with the post-hoc test of Wilcoxon, to detect differences between groups for the RTD. The ANOVA of repeated measures was used with the post-hoc of Bonferroni to detect differences between groups for the H-reflex parameters. The significance level was set at 5% (P>0,05). Results. According the IPAQ, the physical activity level of the participants was classified as: low level (n=4), moderate level (n=9) and high level (n=16). Nine volunteers were excluded of the current values and C-T curves comparisons analysis because they did not present a stable measure of the M wave or by calculations errors detected in the Matlab analysis. No significant differences were found for the parameters extracted from the recruitment curve of the H-reflex between conditions (P>0,05). However, a significant difference was found at H@Threshold in the ACTIKT compared with the BL condition (P=0,025). A large effect size was found in comparisons between the ACTIKT vs BL (ES=5,43) and the INHIKT vs BL(ES=3,57). With respect to RTD, no significant difference was found between conditions and intervals (p>0,05). Conclusion. The findings of the present study demonstrated an increase of the H-reflex amplitude for the same current value needed to evoke the H-Threshold, when the activation protocol was compared to the condition without the tape. This may indicate an increase in the motoneuron excitability verified by a decrease in the threshold of these fibers. It seems like a stimulation of the skin afferents may have induced a decrease in the threshold of the motoneurons by the KT usage over 48h.

Objectives: The aim of this study is to evaluate the temperature, the electromyographic (EMG) activity, the muscle strength, the range of motion (ROM), and electroencephalographic (EEG) after the Kinesio Taping (KT) application on the Rectus Femoral with different tensions and directions. Methods: This is a controled, randomized, blind clinical trial with a sample of 32 healthy young subjects, divided into two groups (n=16). Group A, the KT was applied on the dominant limb from the muscle origin to its insertion (facilitation), and Group B, from the insertion to its origin (inhibition). The nondominant limb was used as the control of this study without the KT. On the first day KT was applied with 0% of tension, on the second day with 10 to 15%, and on the third day with the total tension of 75 to 100%. The evaluations were performed before, immediately after the KT application, and 24 hours with the tape. Before each application, the muscle was subjected to a mechanical vibration of its tendon (patellar) in order to cause a neuromuscular imbalance. Results: The results from this study when evaluated the strength and ROM between the groups didn’t show any significant results. Significant results were presented in these outcomes when was compared the differentes moments on the experimental limb, but almost the same happenned with the control limb. When the EMG was evaluated, the experimental limb of the group A showed significant results on pre and post KT (p=0,003), and post with 24 hours (p=0,009) without tension; also on pre and 24h (p=0,009), and post with 24h (p=0,002) at 10% tension; pre with 24h (p=0,006) at 75% tension. The group B also showed significant results with 0% (p=0,002), and with 10% of tension (p=0,02). However, the temperature of the group A, in 24 hours at 75% tension had a significant difference, obtained a reduction in the temperature, both it happenned on the experimental limb (p=0,004) and also on the control limb (p=0,005) between the groups. The EEG had several changes most on the Alpha and Beta waves on group A, but due to a large sample loss due to corrupted data, the results were not statistically significant. Conclusion: There are no changes in the local temperature, muscle strength and range of motion, so changes have occurred in electroencephalographic activity (EEG), but without statistical significance. Electromyographic (EMG) activity had some statistically significant changes, but not directly related to the direction of application, and the major changes occurred on the applications with low KTT tension like 10%.

A comparison between chiropractic manipulation and Kinesio® Taping and the combination thereof on postural kyphosis15 July 2015 (has links)
M.Tech. (Chiropractic) / Postural kyphosis of the thoracic spine is a common condition which affects a large percentage of the population. With an increase in anteriorly orientated activities, such as working on a computer, driving and studying, postural kyphosis has become more prevalent. Currently, the gold standard for the treatment of postural kyphosis is the stretching of the involved anterior musculature (pectoralis major and minor) and the strengthening of the involved posterior musculature (mid trapezius, rhomboids and levator scapulae). This involves the compliance of patients in the completion of exercises and stretching routines. This often resulted in poor outcomes as routines were performed irregularly or incorrectly. Although, if properly executed, this treatment protocol is effective, chiropractors, and other manual therapists, continue to search adjunctive modalities to improve the positive outcomes of their treatments. With the introduction of Kinesio® taping, the problem of patient compliance could be reduced. The tape is applied by the practitioner and simply left for several days. It has very little effect on the patient’s day to day activities and should continue to have positive impact on the involved musculature with no additional effort required from the participant. The benefits of chiropractic manipulation on the biomechanical relationship between a joint/s and linked musculature has long been recognised. However, very little research has been done to ascertain the direct benefits of chiropractic manipulation to the cervical and upper thoracic regions on postural kyphosis. This study will not only provide valuable information on these two modalities used individually, but also on the effectiveness of the combination of the two treatments. Method: This study was a comparative study consisting of three groups of ten participants. The method of treatment was determined by random group allocation. Group 1 received spinal manipulation to restriction(s) of the cervical and upper thoracic regions only. Group 2 received Kinesio® taping to the rhomboid muscle group only. Group 3 received the combination of spinal manipulation and Kinesio® taping. Subjective measurements consisted of the measurement of the thoracic kyphosis with the use of flexicurve ruler, a series of lateral view plumb line photographs and a set of secondary measurements consisting of three inter scapular measurements, one inter acromioclavicular measurement and two C7 to acromioclavicular measurements on each side.

A study to determine the efficacy of chiropractic manipulation combined with Kinesio® taping in the treatment of chronic lower back pain07 November 2012 (has links)
M.Tech. (Chiropractic) / Chronic lower back pain is a very common condition affecting 60-80% of the worlds’ population at sometime in their lives. Manual therapy, including chiropractic manipulation, has been proven to be very successful in the treatment of chronic lower back pain and reduction in muscle tension. Although chiropractic treatment alone is effective in the treatment of chronic lower back pain, chiropractors often search for adjunctive modalities to enhance the positive outcomes of their treatment. Kinesio® tape application to the lumbar para-spinal muscles has been proven to be effective in increasing lumbar range of motion and in decreasing lower back pain. The purpose of this study was to determine whether the combination of Chiropractic manipulation and Kinesio® taping of the lumbar para-spinals is a more efficient, and possibly effective, treatment protocol in the treatment of chronic lower back pain. Method: This study was a comparative study and consisted of three groups of ten participants. The participants were between the ages of eighteen and forty years of age, with a male to female ration of 1:1. The potential participants were examined and accepted according to the inclusion and exclusion criteria. Group 1 received chiropractic manipulative therapy to the lumbar spine and sacroiliac joints. Group 2 only received the application of Kinesio® tape to the lumbar para-spinal muscles. Group 3 was the combination group, and received chiropractic manipulative therapy to the lumbar spine and sacroiliac joints together with the application of Kinesio® tape to the lumbar para-spinal muscles. Subjective measurements consisted of the Numerical Pain Rating Scale and the Oswestry Pain and Disability Index and objective measurements was range of motion of the lumbar spine. Procedure: Treatment consisted of seven consultations over a three week period. Objective and subjective readings were taken at the beginning of the first, fourth and seventh consultations before treatment. Subjective readings were taken from the Numerical Pain Rating scale and the Oswestry Pain and Disability index. Objective Readings were taken from measurements taken from the Digital Inclinometer device measuring lumbar range of motion. At the first to sixth consultation participants each received their groups’ specific treatment protocol, the seventh consultation consisted of data collection only.

Introduction: Nonspecific chronic low back pain is defined as a pain in the lumbar region lasting more than 12 weeks, which is not related to specific pathologies. Several resources have been used to treat the different aspects of these patients, among them the therapeutic taping like Kinesio Taping (KT). Some studies have verified positive results of KT in aspects such as pain, disability and mobility, however there is little evidence about its influence on muscular aspects. Objective: To evaluate the immediate effects of Kinesio Taping on the muscular function of erector spinae of women with nonspecific chronic low back pain who present or not a psychological aspect (fear and/or beliefs related to physical activity). Methods: Clinical trial, with treatment randomization, open, approved by the research ethics committee of the Universidade Federal de Goiás with the number 1,620,688 and registered in the Brazilian Registry of Clinical Trials - RBR-5xh3ch. An isokinetic dynamometer and a surface electromyography were used to evaluate the muscle function of erector spinae. The Kinesio Taping was applied in "I" for the facilitation of erector spinae following the recommendations of the method. The data were analyzed in the SPSS (Statistical Package for Social Sciences) version 23.0 considering p<0,05. Results: No significant differences were found in strength, fatigue and muscle activity when comparing the evaluations performed without and with the taping (p>0,05) in women with low back pain who do not present fear and/or beliefs related to physical activity. Significant differences in muscle strength was observed when comparing the evaluations performed without and with the taping (p<0,05) in women with low back pain who present fear and/or beliefs related to physical activity. Conclusion: It is concluded that KT does not present immediate effects on muscle function of erector spinae of women with nonspecific chronic low back pain who do not present fears and/or beliefs related, however KT has effects positive on muscle strength when these are present. It is suggested that such improvements occur by the placebo effect since there are no changes in muscle activity.

______________________________________________________________________________ ABSTRACT / OBJECTIVES : To assess the immediate effects and after 24 hours of application of KT in related neuromuscular performance variables during isokinetic knee extension exercise, performed at different speeds.
METHODS: A randomized controlled trial. The study included 17 young subjects with a mean age of 22.0 ± 2.5 years, mean height was 1.76 ± 0.1, mean weight of 71.6 ± 15.2, male, healthy and physically active. Participants gave sequential entry into the study and were randomly allocated into two groups: 1) Kinesio Taping (KT), and 2) Placebo (PL). The volunteers underwent a familiarization process of the evaluation procedures of the study. The rating procedure was characterized by a series of five maximal repetitions of knee extension at speeds of 60, 180 and 300º.s-1 using an isokinetic dynamometer. The volunteers were instructed to attend to the laboratory on three separate days, separated by an interval of 24 hours: 1) evaluation of neuromuscular variables without the application of KT - baseline (BL), 2) evaluation of neuromuscular variables immediately after application KT (IME) and 3) evaluation of neuromuscular variables 24 hours after application of KT (24H). The bandage was applied to the rectus femoris muscle. The abnormality of the data was confirmed by the Kolomogorov-Smirnov test, and data are presented as mean and standard deviation. In this study, we considered the repetition in which reached the highest value of peak torque (PT). For the evaluation of the influence of the application of KT in PT, TTPT, TDA and TLR variables, was used analysis of variance (ANOVA) mixed factorial for repeated measures 2x3 (groups KT and PL X speeds of 60, 180 and 300º.s-1) in the different moments LB, IME and 24H. We adopted a significance of 5% (p <0.05).
RESULTS: The results of PT found are not significant in any of the three speeds and moments. For values TTPT also no significant results between the two groups and the moments were found. The results of the TDA and TLR were not significant in any of the three moments for either group. Could not observe significant differences between the use of KT and PL.
CONCLUSION: The results of this study demonstrate that KT has no effect on neuromuscular performance during the course of isokinetic exercise at different speeds, nor immediately after application nor with 24 hours of use of an elastic bandage. Such findings reinforce the importance of reviewing the use of this feature as a strategy to improve performance during physical activities and sports.

The efficacy of utilizing Kinesio® taping in isolation or in combination with spinal manipulation in the treatment of chronic neck painFrench, Juandre 23 April 2014 (has links)
M.Tech. (Chiropractic) / Introduction: Neck pain is a common condition which affects up to 70 percent of people at some point in their lives, and at any given time about 10 to 20 percent of the population reports neck problems. Although spinal manipulation on its own is effective in the treatment of chronic neck pain, chiropractors continue to search adjunctive modalities to improve the positive outcomes of their treatment. Therefore, it is important to look for the best possible treatment protocol as well as research alternatives, should contraindications for present protocols, such as spinal manipulation, arise. One such alternative could be Kinesio® taping. The purpose of this study was to determine the efficacy of utilising Kinesio® taping, spinal manipulation or the two therapies combined, for the treatment of chronic neck pain. It will also provide further evidence on the efficacy of spinal manipulation and Kinesio® taping in isolation. Method: This study was a comparative study consisting of three groups of ten participants. The method of treatment was determined by random group allocation. Group 1 received spinal manipulation to restriction(s) of the cervical spine only. Group 2 received Kinesio® taping to the longissimus cervicis muscles only. Group 3 received a combination of spinal manipulation and Kinesio® taping as previously described. Subjective measurements consisted of the Vernon-Mior Neck Pain and Disability Index and the Numerical Pain Rating Scale (NPRS) and objective measurements was assessed in degrees by making use of the Cervical-range-of-motion (CROM) instrument. Procedure: There were seven consultations in total. There were six treatment consultations over three weeks. The seventh consultation consisted of data collection only. Subjective and objective measurements were taken prior to treatment on the first and fourth consultation, and on the seventh consultation where no treatment took place. Subjective readings were taken from the Vernon-Mior Neck Pain and Disability Index and the NPRS. Objective readings were assessed in degrees by making use of the Cervical-range-of-motion (CROM) instrument. Results: It was evident from the data that all three groups responded well to their respective treatment protocols. With regards to the subjective measurements Group 1, 2 and 3 demonstrated statistically significant improvement in both neck pain severity and functional disability. As Group 1 had the highest clinical improvement with regards to the NPRS, it indicates that the Group 1 treatment protocol was more effective in decreasing the pain intensity throughout the treatment period. All three groups responded similarly with regards to the Vernon-Mior Neck Pain and Disability Index, although Group 1 responded the best clinically. With regards to the objective measurements Group 1, 2 and 3 demonstrated statistically significant improvement in all ranges of motion of the cervical spine. However, it was found that Group 3 clinically responded best to treatments in all the ranges of motion except for right lateral flexion in which Group 2 responded best to treatment. Conclusion: The study showed that the treatment protocols for Group 1, 2 and 3 were effective in treating chronic neck pain. The evidence suggests that the Group 1 treatment protocol, which received spinal manipulation, is more effective than Kinesio® taping alone and the two therapies combined in decreasing pain intensity and functional disability in the treatment of chronic neck pain. The evidence further suggests that the Group 3 treatment protocol, which received spinal manipulation in combination with Kinesio® taping, is more effective than spinal manipulation and Kinesio® taping alone in increasing all cervical spine ranges of motion in the treatment of chronic neck pain.

Previous issue date: 2014-07-18 / Coordenação de Aperfeiçoamento de Pessoal de Nível Superior / Background: Knee osteoarthritis (OA) is one of the most prevalent injuries in elderly people. This injury causes pain, reduction of the strength, edema, articular function deficit and issues with life quality. There are many possible treatments for knee OA, one that is becoming popular is the Kinesio Taping (KT) technique. This technique appears to improve muscle strength, reduce pain and edema. Objectives: Verify the effect of the KT technique on edema, pain and muscle strength in elderly with knee OA. Methods: 76 subjects with knee OA were first assessed for quadriceps muscular strength (isokinetic dynamometer) , pain (pressure algometry), edema (volumetry), knee function (Lysholm questionnaire) and quality of life (WOMAC). After the baseline evaluation, the subjects were randomly divided into two groups: Intervention (IG) and Placebo (PG). The IG group received KT on the quadriceps muscle, following the Y technique from origin to insertion, also received KT for lymphatic correction and space correction. The GP received elastic tapes without any therapeutic indication. All subjects kept the tapes on for 4 days. After that they returned to post-application evaluation and 15 days after that the subjects were assessed for follow up. Results: No statistically significant differences were found between groups on the post-treatment or follow up for any of the variables investigated. Conclusion: KT technique provided no beneficial effects on pain, muscle strength, edema, knee function and life quality in elderly with knee OA.

Vliv facilitačního kinesio tapingu v oblasti dolních fixátorů lopatek na bolestivost spoušťových bodů v m. trapezius pars descendens / The Effect of Facilitating Kinesio Taping of lower scapula fixators on pain threshold of trigger points in the m. trapezius pars descendensBahenská, Eva January 2013 (has links)
Name: The Effect of Facilitating Kinesio Taping of lower scapula fixators on pain threshold of trigger points in the m. trapezius pars descendens Objectives: This study is a pilot study. The goal of this study is to determine effects of Facilitating Kinesio Taping of lower scapula fixators on painfulness of trigger points in the m. trapezius pars descendens. Methods: The study took place in a private medical office with thirteen patients. All of these patients were physically examined using standard tests of physiotherapy. Patients were measured using a pressure algometer to assess trigger points as painful. They reported the intensity of pain on VAS. The places of measurement were trigger points one and two in the muscle according Travell and Simons. Data were analyzed using the statistical program SPSS 15.0 and Microsoft Office Excel. Results: This study had three hypotheses. In the case of the first hypothesis, I concluded that KT has an effect on the pain threshold and its application will reduce the pain threshold in m.trapezius pars descendens. Statistical significance was the value of p = 0.03 and p = 0.011, the value of material significance (101.31 kPa and 106.7 kPa) confirmed my theory that after KT will increase the pressure of 100 kPa in the TrP1 and TrP2. In the second hypothesis, it...
