KISS-Tree: Smart Latch-Free In-Memory Indexing on Modern Architectures

Kissinger, Thomas, Schlegel, Benjamin, Habich, Dirk, Lehner, Wolfgang 04 June 2012 (has links)
Growing main memory capacities and an increasing number of hardware threads in modern server systems led to fundamental changes in database architectures. Most importantly, query processing is nowadays performed on data that is often completely stored in main memory. Despite of a high main memory scan performance, index structures are still important components, but they have to be designed from scratch to cope with the specific characteristics of main memory and to exploit the high degree of parallelism. Current research mainly focused on adapting block-optimized B+-Trees, but these data structures were designed for secondary memory and involve comprehensive structural maintenance for updates. In this paper, we present the KISS-Tree, a latch-free inmemory index that is optimized for a minimum number of memory accesses and a high number of concurrent updates. More specifically, we aim for the same performance as modern hash-based algorithms but keeping the order-preserving nature of trees. We achieve this by using a prefix tree that incorporates virtual memory management functionality and compression schemes. In our experiments, we evaluate the KISS-Tree on different workloads and hardware platforms and compare the results to existing in-memory indexes. The KISS-Tree offers the highest reported read performance on current architectures, a balanced read/write performance, and has a low memory footprint.

KISSing and other strategies for successful communication : A case study on communication between Nordic and Chinese business people using English as a lingua franca / “KISSing” och andra strategier för framgångsrik kommunikation : En fallstudie om kommunikation mellan nordiska och kinesiska affärsmän och   -kvinnor som använder engelska som lingua franca

Rixer, Johanna January 2016 (has links)
This is a case study on the communication between Nordic and Chinese business people using English as a lingua franca in their business communication. The aim of this paper is to establish if misunderstandings in communication occur between Chinese and Nordic language speakers (Finnish and Swedish) in a business environment and, if they do, what the nature of these misunderstandings is. In this paper, recorded conversations are analysed to establish if there are misunderstandings between the parties. The recordings were made at a global industrial company in Sweden and in China. Interviews with the participants were also carried out in order to establish their own ideas concerning the communication flow and to find out if the participants are themselves aware of using any particular communication strategies when interacting with one another. The results of the case study show that there were some misunderstandings in the communication between Nordic and Chinese business people; however, there were not any particularly serious misunderstandings with respect to the company’s business aims and objectives. The results indicate that the parties use communication strategies to enhance their messages and to determine if a message has been conveyed successfully. The strategies that were commonly used were confirmations in the form of follow-up questions and speaking slowly. Written or non-verbal communication were found to be used as a supplement to verbal communication. A strategy that the participants themselves noted as successful was keeping their messages short and simple. This is also known as the KISS-principle. The result of the study indicates potential misunderstandings caused by the Chinese using Yes as an act of active listening rather than agreement and it is suggested that an awareness of this cultural difference may help improve the intercultural communication between the parties.

Gonçalves, Camila dos Santos January 2017 (has links)
The theme of this thesis emerged from the discomfort caused by an intense experience: the volunteer work as a psychologist in the psychosocial actions offered after the fire at a nightclub in Santa Maria/RS/Brazil, on January 27, 2013. This fact mobilized psychologists from all over the country, who started an active role together with other organizations to plan and care for families, survivors, professionals and the population in general. This critical event triggered the dismantling of prevailing and dominant knowledge in the field of Psychology, which, historically, has contributed to the psychologization and pathologization of life by creating strategies and solutions for everyday experiences. We started from the recognition of the incompleteness of knowledge itself and the possibility of fallibility of instituted knowledge. Therefore, given the necessary creation of conditions to problematize our practices, we took the fire as a starting point for rethinking forms of emergence and visibility of certain ways of psychological practice. The general objective was to investigate which psychological knowledge and practices the critical event made emerge. The specific objectives were: to map the characteristics of the psychologists who worked as volunteers after the fire at the nightclub in Santa Maria; to check the processes of meanings attributed by psychologists to psychological knowledge and practices in the voluntary care and the representational process that generated these meanings; to identify the problematizations about psychological knowledge and practices pointed out by the psychologists concerning the generated demands, and their (in)visibilities in their performance in Psychology; to analyze the absences and emergencies that the professionals identified regarding psychological knowledge and practices; to reconstruct the memories of the collective work of these psychologists/volunteers from their narratives. The methodological itinerary used different resources of gathering information, and the corpus of investigation was composed of field diary, documentary research, individual interviews and a focus group After analyzing the information, we delimited three sets of analysis: plurality of knowledge: processuality and coexistence as constituents of the field of knowledge; paths of psychological thinking from a historical-critical perspective: the construction of the field of knowledge and ways of doing politics; and emergencies of the psychological field regarding the critical event: the construction of knowledge against the waste of experience. Therefore, when we consider the critical event as an analyzing device for psychological knowledge and practices, it was possible to raise aspects that we consider to be the absences of the field of knowledge, referring to training in Psychology, to techniques and to the relation of knowledge and practices with the city and the collectives. On the other hand, the emergencies raised by the professionals strengthen the sense of valorization of the present against the waste of experience, through local protagonism, the creation of singular practices and the affective collaborative networks in the collective construction of work.

OS TESTEMUNHOS NA COBERTURA AO VIVO DO INCÊNDIO DA BOATE KISS / THE TESTEMONY ON LIVE COVERAGE OF KISS NIGHTCLUB FIRE

Oliveira, Juliana Motta de 15 March 2016 (has links)
Coordenação de Aperfeiçoamento de Pessoal de Nível Superior / The research deals with the participation of witnesses in live news coverage of Kiss Nightclub fire. The tragedy occurred in the city of Santa Maria (RS), on January 27, 2013, caused the death of 242 youths and had worldwide repercussions. The coverage has exposed not only drama of the survivors and families of the victims, but the complexity of journalistic work in an unstructured environment where productive routines are disrupted and hampered access to official sources. From this context enhanced by the immediacy of live coverage, there is the rise of eyewitness sources. As the theoretical part, three perspectives are presented: the constructionist theories, with the understanding journalism as a speech due to a number of conditions and configurative circumstances of the produced content, and governed by a communications contract; the theories of journalism, with the understanding of the central role of sources in the construction of journalistic discourse; and studies of the testimony, with the concept of presumed reliability, truth-effect and reality marking of such testimony. Based on these assumptions, understanding the roles played by the testimonies in coverage and discuss how the constitutive thrill of a disaster situation is aimed, transformed into pathos effect from the manifestation of the testimonies, contributes not only to the target capture, as well as for information. For this, live the entries broadcast by Globo Television Network and its RBS TV affiliate, on January 27, 28 and 29, 2013 are analyzed, from the systematization of Patrick Charaudeau on the discursive means to prove the truth ( designation, reconstruction and elucidation) and to give emotion (pathos effect). On the eyewitnesses manifestation there was a predominance of real evidence (66.7%). However, it is suggested that given the context of the tragic event, the pathos effect is present even in the statements of the target information. Likewise, it is observed that the sequences classified as pathos effect also present informational content. Thus, it is concluded that the communication contract gained new dimensions in disaster situations, making the feeling making gets closer to knowledge making.

The Virgin's Kiss: Gender, Leprosy, and Romance in the Life of St. Frideswide

Fuller, Gary Stephen 06 June 2012 (has links) (PDF)
The longer thirteenth-century Middle English verse life of Saint Frideswide found in the collection of saints' lives known as the South English Legendary (SEL) narrates an event unique to medieval hagiography. In the poem, a leper asks the virgin saint to kiss him with her "sweet mouth," which she does in spite of her feelings of considerable shame, and the leper is healed. The erotic nature of the leper's request, Frideswide's reluctance to grant it, and her shame throughout the incident represent a significant departure from the twelfth-century Latin texts on which the SEL version of the saint's life is based. In this paper, I provide a deeper critical analysis of the text than has previously been attempted, exploring the SEL version of the leper's healing from medieval perspectives on leprosy, gender, religious authority, and genre. By the thirteenth century, leprosy in hagiographic texts had come to symbolize the abject condition of Christ himself, and saints' lives invariably portrayed their protagonists as eager to embrace and kiss lepers as a means of serving Christ. Frideswide's shame and reluctance to kiss the leper greatly contrast with generic convention and cause her gender to emerge as a defining holy attribute inexplicably demanded by the leper's exigency. The SEL-poet's portrayal of Frideswide's gender as a vital component of her healing power is consistent with medieval conceptions of personhood, from which gender could not be separated. The poet crafts the scene of the leper's healing using conventions not only of hagiography but of romance as well; this hybridization of genres creates tension between sanctity and eroticism in the scene. The poet's depiction of the saint as simultaneously exceptional and human may have been a reaction against the contemporary ecclesiastical landscape, in which female authority and influence were limited. Moreover, the romantic language used by the poet to create tension also makes Frideswide's story more accessible to lay readers by transforming the relationship between supplicant and saint into an interaction between a courtly lover and his lady.
