Investigação do acidente da Boate Kiss em Santa Maria - Rio Grande do Sul - Brasil / Nightclub Kiss Accident Analysis in Santa Maria / RS: A case study focusing on the investigation of the accident as an opportunity to return the learned experience

Loutfi, Marcelo 14 October 2015 (has links)
Introduction: The accident in Santa Maria / RS is one of the most publicized by the media having international repercussions. The criminal investigation conducted by the police and also by the technicians of the Regional Engineering Board, resulted in an understanding of immediate facts, i.e., the causes and effects which clearly established without seeking for the roots of the problem. In other words, here we seek to contextualize the accident within the cultural, political, regulatory and economic aspects. If we did not analyze the correlated aspects, the feedback, learning and risk management itself would be restricted to the accident proximal sphere. Questions about the use and sale of fireworks, the use of lining materials in clubs and nightclubs, the organization of events with large amounts of people indoors, are not detailed in the reports. It was also not broadly discussed questions about the role of governmental agencies in providing operating licenses for nightclubs, the role of risk prevention experts and the role of public officials in major disasters and major accidents, especially those related to chemical substances, that, in this case, killed two hundred forty two young people in a few minutes, all of whom died due to the action of the cyanide gas. Objectives: In face of these and other shortcomings, this paper proposes a method of coping with these issues. This proposal may be easily perceived as multidisciplinary since it would be difficult to develop a single disciplinary study without putting in jeopardy the opportunity of learning from the tragic accident. The focus is to find and present the contingent of influences that were at stake in the club management system. These findings may path the way for deeper studies of the social sphere and techniques which were present at that time and that were revealed by the tragedy. 11 Materials and Methods: In order to achieve this goal, we went far beyond the immediate relationship of cause and effect; we used a descriptive and analytical model of Vertical Maps, AcciMap proposed by the engineer Jeans Rasmussen with a qualitative approach. In this kind of study it is imperative to identify high political level influences, analyzing the events from top to bottom, and also going through state and municipal management data including the nightclub management itself. The data was collected from available media, from governmental agencies, particularly the civil police report and the Engineering Board report. Results: The vertical maps revealed the interaction and the systemic institution loss of control. The distribution of actors and influences that act in order to bring the system slowly but forcefully to the zone of instability is visible. The idealized conceptions, regulatory documents and public policies deviated due to uncontrolled interactions from security principles, without the system being able to detect these rapid changes. Institutions are pressed by a routine that on one hand leaves out risk management aspects and on the other hand by the inconsistency of coercive governmental supervision. Final thoughts: Even a single case study, due to the strength of the vertical maps, can expand the understanding of the social, organizational and political phenomena. By seeking relationships between actors and between events, the study encodes a unique structure which in theory is related to several cases. On the one hand the data obtained in the investigation itself, is not identical to other cases, on the other hand as we examine and analyze the documents important features for theoretical and methodological comparison emerge, thus increasing understanding of this and other accidents. Two other contributions are particularly relevant. The first one is the theoretical and academic contribution; it has as objective to debate the implementation of vertical maps in the study of accidents, especially the multifaceted ones with numerous actors. Another one is given by the display of numerous subsystems, which result from the vertical analysis, where each subsystem can be studied separately highlighting new ways of coping with major accidents.

By analyzing Jornal Nacional television reports, the use of melodramatic resources is investigated to initially understand the reasons of this union and based in which aspects it happened. After that, the intention is to problematize how Jornal Nacional information is built and how journalists tell their stories. The aim is to reflect on the consequences of this union, that highlights content over form (language), once any fact can become important and interesting when melodramatic resources are incorporated to the reports. In order to accomplish this study, Jornal Nacional press coverage of Kiss nightclub fire, that killed 242 people, mostly young university students, and hurt another 116 in Santa Maria, Rio Grande do Sul will be analyzed. After gathering this material a selection of reports that best represent this kind of coverage will be carried out. Reports will be analyzed based on classical film structure theory to identify melodramatic elements in journalistic narrative construction, built to seek audience through identification, sensations, shallow content and moralizing pedagogy. By that, the intention is to problematize journalism and to answer if what we have in television nowadays still is journalism, considering genre criteria, or if it got lost in suspense and repetition sensationalism.

La voie de signalisation AstA, qui est conservée au cours de l’évolution, contrôle le déclenchement de la métamorphose et régule la croissance chez Drosophila melanogaster / AstA signaling functions as an evolutionary conserved mechanism timing metamorphosis and growth in Drosophila Melanogaster

Deveci, Derya 31 October 2018 (has links)
The onset of puberty occurs in response to the integration of various internal homeostatic and external signals. Up until now, it remains largely unknown which internal sensory mechanisms are involved in the coupling of those signals. In mammals, the onset of puberty is associated with elevated GnRH pulsations leading to a peak of steroid hormones. The KISS/KISSR system is a pivotal upstream regulator of GnRH producing neurons. In Drosophila melanogaster a peak of prothoracicotropic hormone (PTTH) produced by two pairs of neurons (PTTHn) leads to the production of the insect steroid hormone ecdysone. PTTH is one of the first signals to activate the cascade of events leading to maturation. Once PTTH production is blocked, a delay is observed in the onset of the transition from juvenile to adult stage, whereas precocious maturation is observed upon PTTH over-expression, denoting an important role for PTTHn in the integration of cues. In order to uncover signals integrated by PTTHn we have conducted a biased RNAi screen in PTTHn. After two rounds of screening we identified the GPCR Allatostatin A receptor 1 (AstA-R1) as a positive regulator of PTTHn. AstA-R1 knock down delays maturation with a subsequent increase in final pupal size. Down regulation of its ligand, Allatostatin-A (AstA) on the brain is also affecting the timing of maturation. We found that AstA is produced in the central brain by a bilateral pair of neurons that extend their axons towards the PTTHn dendrites. In addition, AstA neurons also project their axons towards the Drosophila insulin producing cells (IPCs) that are known to regulate larval growth. Knockdown of AstA-R1 on the IPCs leads to smaller pupae. These findings imply that the AstA neurons are able to regulate growth and maturation timing by interacting with 2 different circuits: the PTTHn and IPCs. Unexpectedly, AstA-R1 and AstA genes share a common evolutionary origin with KISSR and KISS, respectively, suggesting a common mechanism between insects and mammals for the integration of signals that control the onset of puberty.

Like A Woman: Playing The Homosexual As Truth In Kiss Of The Spider Womana

Beaman, Michael 01 January 2009 (has links)
Identity, who we are, is at the core of every human being, thus at the core of every character from every play. How the character identifies his self through gender and sexual identity will shape both physical and emotional choices that an actor will make through the rehearsal process. As an actor, it is absolutely imperative to resist the urge to pass judgment on the characters we portray. As more characters in modern drama are openly gay, there is an increasing urge for an actor to fall into campy stereotypes. Through a performance of the role of Molina in Manuel Puig's Kiss of the Spider Woman, this thesis will examine the blurring line of gender identity of the leading man in contemporary drama and explore the challenges of portraying a feminine man in a non-stereotypical way, remaining true to the identification of the character. A thorough historical analysis presents a look at the evolution of the homosexual throughout modern drama, from self-loathing party boys of the seventies to ordinary fathers, husbands, and sons in modern households. A structural analysis of Puig's text will aid in the choices made by the actor. Lastly, a complete character analysis will examine the psychological motivations behind Molina's actions as well as the changes in his gender and sexual identity throughout the piece. This thesis will culminate in a comprehensive development, rehearsal and performance journal, which will document and address challenges, discoveries, failures and victories during the production process.

KISS-Tree: Smart Latch-Free In-Memory Indexing on Modern Architectures

Kissinger, Thomas, Schlegel, Benjamin, Habich, Dirk, Lehner, Wolfgang 30 May 2022 (has links)
Growing main memory capacities and an increasing number of hardware threads in modern server systems led to fundamental changes in database architectures. Most importantly, query processing is nowadays performed on data that is often completely stored in main memory. Despite of a high main memory scan performance, index structures are still important components, but they have to be designed from scratch to cope with the specific characteristics of main memory and to exploit the high degree of parallelism. Current research mainly focused on adapting block-optimized B+-Trees, but these data structures were designed for secondary memory and involve comprehensive structural maintenance for updates. In this paper, we present the KISS-Tree, a latch-free in-memory index that is optimized for a minimum number of memory accesses and a high number of concurrent updates. More specifically, we aim for the same performance as modern hash-based algorithms but keeping the order-preserving nature of trees. We achieve this by using a prefix tree that incorporates virtual memory management functionality and compression schemes. In our experiments, we evaluate the KISS-Tree on different workloads and hardware platforms and compare the results to existing in-memory indexes. The KISS-Tree offers the highest reported read performance on current architectures, a balanced read/write performance, and has a low memory footprint.
