Cette étude prospective, randomisée et à l’aveugle a évalué la validité, la réactivité et fiabilité de l’échelle de grimaces félines (Feline Grimace Scale; FGS) chez les chatons. Trente-six jeunes chattes en santé (âgées de 10 semaines à 6 mois) étaient filmées avant puis 1 et 2 h après ovariohystérectomie. La procédure a été effectuée avec un protocole d’anesthésie injectable (sans opioïde), avec ou sans analgésie multimodale. Les chatons en douleur étaient également filmés avant et 1h après avoir reçu une analgésie de secours (buprénorphine 0.02 mg/kg IM). Quatre évaluateurs, aveugles aux conditions expérimentales, ont évalué deux fois à cinq semaines d’intervalle les expressions faciales sur 111 images extraites des vidéos. Les cinq unités d’action (action unit; AU) de la FGS ont été évaluées (position des oreilles, serrage orbital, tension du museau, position des moustaches, position de la tête; avec un score possible de 0 à 2 pour chacune). La validité de construit, la réactivité et la fiabilité inter- et intra-évaluateur de la FGS ont été analysées en utilisant un modèle linéaire avec correction Benjamini–Hochberg, un test Wilcoxon signed-rank et un coefficient de corrélation intra-classes unique (ICCsingle), respectivement (P <0.05). Les ratios des scores FGS totaux (médiane [étendue interquartile, EI]) étaient augmentés 1 et 2 h après l’ovariohystérectomie (médiane [EI] : 0.30 [0.20–0.40] et 0.30 [0.20–0.40], respectivement) comparativement à la mesure de base (médiane [EI] : 0.10 [0.00–0.30]) (P <0.001), et inférieurs après l’analgésie (médiane [EI] : 0.40 [0.20–0.50]) qu’avant son administration (médiane [EI] : 0.20 [0.10–0.38]) (P <0.001). Pour la fiabilité inter-évaluateur, les ICCsingle des ratios des scores FGS totaux étaient 0.68 et compris entre 0.35 et 0.70 pour chaque AU, individuellement. Pour la fiabilité intra-évaluateur, les ICCsingle des ratios des scores FGS totaux étaient compris entre 0.77–0.91 et 0.55–1.00 pour chaque AU. La FGS est un outil d’évaluation de la douleur aiguë valide et réactif chez les chatons avec une fiabilité inter-évaluateur modérée et intra-évaluateur bonne à excellente. / This prospective, randomized, blinded study investigated the construct validity, responsiveness and reliability of the Feline Grimace Scale (FGS) in kittens. Thirty-six healthy female kittens (aged 10 weeks to 6 months) were video recorded before, 1 and 2 h after ovariohysterectomy using an opioid-free injectable anesthetic protocol with or without multimodal analgesia. Painful kittens were additionally filmed before and 1 h after administration of rescue analgesia (buprenorphine 0.02 mg/kg IM). One hundred eleven facial images collected from video recordings were randomly scored by 4 observers, blinded to treatment groups and time points, twice with a 5 weeks interval using the FGS. The five action units (AU) of the FGS were scored (ear position, orbital tightening, muzzle tension, whiskers position and head position; 0–2 each). Construct validity, responsiveness, inter- and intra-rater reliability of the FGS were evaluated using linear models with Benjamini–Hochberg correction, Wilcoxon signed-rank test and single intra-class correlation coefficients (ICCsingle), respectively (P <0.05). The FGS total ratio scores were higher 1 and 2 h after ovariohysterectomy (median [interquartile range, IQR]: 0.3 [0.20–0.40], and 0.30 [0.20–0.40], respectively) than at baseline (median [QR]: 0.10 [0.00–0.30]) (P <0.001), and lower after the administration of rescue analgesia (median [QR]: 0.40 [0.20–0.50]) than before (median [QR]: 0.20 [0.10–0.38]) (P <0.001). The inter-rater ICCsingle was 0.68 for the FGS total ratio scores and 0.35–0.70 for AUs considered individually. The intra-rater ICCsingle was 0.77–0.91 for the FGS total ratio scores and 0.55–1.00 for AUs considered individually. The FGS is a valid and responsive acute pain scoring instrument with moderate inter-rater reliability and good to excellent intra-rater reliability in kittens.

Ce manuscrit rapporte une étude comparant un protocole d’anesthésie injectable sans opioïde avec ou sans analgésie multimodale chez des chatons subissant une ovariohystérectomie. Cette étude clinique, prospective, randomisée et à l’aveugle, inclut 29 chatons âgés entre 10 semaines et 6 mois. L’anesthésie générale était induite avec une injection intramusculaire de dexmédétomidine (40 μg/kg), kétamine (4 mg/kg) et midazolam (0,25 mg/kg). Le groupe multimodal (MMG; n=14) bénéficiait de méloxicam (0,1 mg/kg) sous-cutané et de bupivacaïne 0,25% intrapéritonéale (2 mg/kg), mais pas le groupe contrôle (CG; n=15). À quinze minutes post-opératoire, 0,4 mg/kg d’atipamézole était injecté intramusculaire. La douleur et la consommation de nourriture étaient évaluées pendant 24 heures post-opératoire. Une analgésie de secours (buprénorphine 0,02 mg/kg intramusculaire [CG et MMG] et méloxicam sous-cutané [CG]) était donnée lors de douleur ≥4/12 sur l’échelle de douleur multidimensionnelle féline de UNESP-Botucatu – forme courte. Les analyses statistiques ont été réalisées avec des modèles linéaires suivis de comparaisons pairées post-hoc avec correction de Benjamini-Hochberg (p<0,05). L'analgésie de secours était plus fréquente dans CG (n=15/15) que dans MMG (n=1/14) (p<0.001). Les scores de douleur (moyenne ± SD) étaient supérieurs dans CG à 1h, 2h et 4h post-opératoire (4.1±2.8, 4.8±3.0, 5.3±1.2, respectivement) que dans MMG (1.6±1.0, 1.1±1.0, 0.9±0.8, respectivement) (p<0.001). La consommation de nourriture (moyenne ± SD), en pourcentage, après 2 et 60 minutes, était supérieure dans MMG (9.7±9.1 et 74.2±29.1, respectivement) que dans CG (1.4±2.4 et 24.5±26.3, respectivement) à 1h post-opératoire (p<0.001). Ce protocole multimodal sans opioïde fournit une analgésie adéquate et supérieure au contrôle chez les chatons subissant une ovariohystérectomie. La douleur diminue la consommation de nourriture post-opératoire. / The study reported in this manuscript compared an opioid-free injectable anesthetic protocol with or without multimodal analgesia in kittens undergoing ovariohysterectomy. Twenty-nine healthy kittens aged between 10 weeks and 6 months were included in this prospective, randomized, blinded, clinical trial. Anesthesia was performed with an intramuscular injection of dexmedetomidine (40 μg/kg), ketamine (4 mg/kg) and midazolam (0.25 mg/kg). In the multimodal group (MMG), cats (n=14) received subcutaneous meloxicam (0.1 mg/kg) and intraperitoneal bupivacaine 0.25% (2 mg/kg), but not in the control group (CG, n=15). Atipamezole (0.4 mg/kg) was given intramuscular 15 minutes after surgery. Postoperative pain and soft food intake were evaluated at specific time points up to 24 hours. Rescue analgesia (intramuscular buprenorphine 0.02 mg/kg [in MMG and CG] and subcutaneous meloxicam 0.1 mg/kg [only in CG]) was administered when pain scores ≥4/12 according to the UNESP-Botucatu multidimensional feline pain assessment scale – short form. Statistical analyses were performed with linear models and post-hoc pairwise comparison with Benjamini-Hochberg corrections (P<0.05). Prevalence of rescue analgesia was higher in CG (n=15/15) than MMG (n=1/14) (P<0.001). Pain scores (mean ± SD) were higher in CG at 1h, 2h and 4h postoperatively (4.1±2.8, 4.8±3.0, 5.3±1.2, respectively) than MMG (1.6±1.0, 1.1±1.0, 0.9±0.8, respectively) (P<0.001). Food intake (mean ± SD), in %, after 2 and 60 minutes was higher in MMG (9.7±9.1 and 74.2±29.1, respectively) than in CG (1.4±2.4 and 24.5±26.3, respectively) at 1h postoperatively (P<0.001). The multimodal opioid-free protocol produced superior postoperative analgesia than control in kittens undergoing ovariohysterectomy. Pain decreased postoperative food intake.

“Prestige and Prurience: The Decline of the American Art House and the Emergence of Sexploitation, 1957-1972” presents a historical narrative of the art house theatre during the 1960s and its surrounding years, examining the ways in which art theatres transformed into adult theatres during the 1960s and 1970s. Beginning in earnest in the immediate post-war period, art houses in America experienced a short period of growth before stagnating in the middle 1950s. With the release in 1957 of the erotically charged Brigitte Bardot film …And God Created Woman, a new era of art houses followed, one that is characterized by the emergence of sexualized advertising, content and stars. As the 1960s came, sex films like The Immoral Mr. Teas played on art film marketing strategies and even screened in many art houses. Gradually, sexploitation films began to dominate art house programs and replace European art films and Hollywood revivals. In this transitional period, however, sexploitation films used key strategies to emulate many art film characteristics, and likewise art films used sexploitation techniques in order to maintain marketability for American distribution and exhibition. By studying the promotion and programming used by art house theatres during this period, this thesis identifies and announces a number of key trends within the dynamic period for art houses. The period is distinguished by its convergence of practices related to prestigious and prurient signs, merging art and sex in ways unique to the era and to the circumstances by which sex films infiltrated art houses and art films pandered to salacious interests. It presents a new perspective on the history of art houses, art cinema, American exhibition, sexploitation films, hardcore pornography and censorship. / text
