Closing the gap: the development of a knowledge translation course designed to improve evidence-based clinical practice for school professionals

Anscher, Samantha 27 January 2020 (has links)
Knowledge translation includes the steps of researching and establishing best practices, communicating those findings to stakeholders and consumers, and then using that information effectively in practice (Straus, Tetroe, & Graham, 2009). Knowledge translation usually takes the form of conducting research, creating systematic reviews and other research articles, and publishing in academic journals, all of which are not enough to guarantee that knowledge will actually be used in clinical practice (Straus et al., 2009). Therefore, there needs to be a more explicit process for improving knowledge translation to increase the use of evidence-based interventions in clinical practice (Straus et al., 2009). This doctoral project will focus on improving knowledge translation as it applies to occupational therapy researchers disseminating research knowledge to school-based professionals and will further explore the barriers both occupational therapy researchers and school professionals face with knowledge translation. The proposed solution is an online course titled Closing the Gap: A Knowledge Translation Course Designed to Improve Evidence-Based Clinical Practice for School Professionals. This course will be developed in order to address the current gap between knowledge translation and clinical practice; and to improve research utilization in occupational therapy in school settings in particular. This six-week course utilizes an online learning environment through teachable.com in order to increase accessibility of information to course participants and to allow for weekly self-paced learning to promote participant success. The course will include multiple professional development activities, such as small discussion work through an online discussion board, case studies, and problem-based learning as these are proven methods to effectively promote confidence with integrating research into clinical practice (Anaby, Korner-Bitensky, Law, & Cormier, 2015; Cahill, Egan, Wallingford, Huber-Lee, and Dess-McGuire, 2015). The online course described above aims to improve evidence clinical practice in school settings by increasing direct communication between the school professionals and researchers, by having school professionals practice applying research to relevant clinical cases, and by having researchers practice communicating research findings to other professionals. This online course is critically needed in order to make knowledge translation more intentional, to improve evidence-based clinical practice, and to achieve AOTA’s 2025 Vision of being an effective and evidence-based profession.

”Mauvefärgad, dissa och tjöta” : Förändring av det språksociologiska textavsnittet i läromedel i svenska / “Mauvefärgad, dissa and tjöta” : Change in sociolinguistics part of the study material in Swedish

Persson, Sandra January 2016 (has links)
The purpose of this paper is to find out how sociolinguistics part depicted in textbooks of Swedish over time and study how much space portion is provided in three teaching aids dated 1976, 1995 and 2014. The study also intends to examine the degree of changes and what they might be due to. This study rests on two research traditions, sociolinguistics and materials analysis. Research in language sociology is extensive. Similarly, there is a tradition of research of teaching materials analysis particularly in the subject of history. Counterparts to my research is thus to be found in particular in the subject of history. For the Swedish part of the substance seems this type of research to be scant, consequently, there is a research gap that is interesting to examine more closely. This study can be seen as a contribution to the earlier tradition of research in general, but also as a contribution to the subject Swedish study materials research in particular. In order to answer these questions, a qualitative and a quantitative content analysis are made. The results show that the deployment can be greatly linked to the prevailing social context that political governance, curriculum, textbook author, etc. The results also show that the mayor differentiation lies between percentage with in the socio-linguistics text section internal than external to the teaching material. Changes that can be distinguished in the teaching material are seen mainly in the method of preparation. Learning materials go from the more stereotypical and more locked form of knowledge to become more educational and based more and more on the individual and his or her knowledge.

Merit of Computer Game in Tacit Knowledge Acquisition and Retention for Safety Training in the Construction Industry

Jain, Nidhi Mahavirprasad 2010 December 1900 (has links)
Although many efforts have been exerted to increase safety on construction sites, it has never been easy to run a construction project with zero accidents. Previous research indicated that lessons learned from previous projects could help construction professionals prevent repetitive mistakes, but those lessons are based on individual experience, and therefore it is difficult to document and reuse them. Various web-based database systems were suggested to better manage this tacit knowledge in construction, but transforming someone's tacit knowledge into value for the next project using these systems is still challenging. Well-designed computer games often offer a number of constructive instructional features especially for young generations who have grown up in an era of computer games. Research in education reports that visual presentation facilitates the human's cognitive process. Would visual representation of tacit knowledge in a computer game help construction professionals acquire tacit knowledge and use it to reduce repetitive accidents on construction sites? In order to figure out whether visual presentation of accident cases in a computer game could improve tacit knowledge acquisition and retention, a prototype Xbox 360 computer game presenting accident scenes using 3D computer models was developed and tested with college students working in the field of construction management. The game had 3D construction site accident scenes with treasure boxes hidden and the players had to find the treasure boxes and read the information obtained from it. The treasure boxes were placed relative to the information they carried. The text part had the same accident scenes explained in text with details of what should have been followed to avoid the accident. Students from the field of construction management and civil engineering were requested to participate in the test. Each participant went through two accidents in text and two accidents in the game environment and answered a set of 16 questions based on the knowledge they gained. There was no time limit for the test. They also had to answer an exit question as to which training method they preferred. The participants were asked to come again on the seventh day to answer a set of 16 questions without going through any training to check the retention of knowledge. Statistically we can say that on an overall basis visual training had more correct answers than text for knowledge dissemination as well as retention. But there was no statistical difference seen in the number of correct answers obtained from dissemination and retention tests for text as well as visual training.

Disseminating Knowledge with Dance

2013 December 1900 (has links)
The Delphi method was used to investigate the use of dance and movement in knowledge dissemination by systematically accessing and synthesizing the knowledge of researchers and dancers who have used this particular artistic method. The expert panel included three researchers (two also identifying as dancers) who had used dance as a tool to disseminate research findings in formal research. Two rounds of online Delphi questionnaires were used to generate data. The study’s findings included several categories of consensus reached amongst participants: (a) using dance for the purposes of knowledge dissemination is complex, time-consuming, and requires expertise, (b) dance is a useful and valid means for disseminating research findings both in qualitative and quantitative projects, (c) movement and dance are common to all humans, provide a common base or means for interaction, and provide a legitimate way of knowing, expressing knowledge and concepts either differently or sometimes better than language, (d) dance is not appropriate to use in all research projects and there is no singular procedure, (e) dance evokes emotional, visceral, and embodied responses that cannot be predicted, and (f) researchers ethical care and responsibility exceeds typical considerations and extends to others members such as the dancers and audience members. Differences of opinion arose about researchers’ ethical responsibilities associated with level of care for audience members when using dance as a knowledge dissemination strategy. The current study’s findings extend knowledge and understanding about the use of dance in research dissemination, and have implications for future research and research practice.

Approche critique du "corps disponible" dans le champ chorégraphique : une contribution à l'étude des modes de structuration du monde de la danse par l'entrée de la diffusion des savoirs / Critical approach to the notion of « available body » within the choreographic field : a contribution to the study of methods of structuring the dance world by means of knowledge dissemination

Saladain, Lise 19 January 2017 (has links)
Very often nowadays, the dance community addresses the following formulation: «available body». Taking an overall look of the transmission process of the making of a dancer, it is suggested that in dance a well rounded performing body is not a body customized to artistic requirements for a codified dance anymore, but a body whose adaptation would paradoxically lie in both esthetic and physical great plasticity. What can this new dance body concept induce on choreographic transmission – and beyond - on today's neoliberal society? The study first examines the context of the emergence and enforcement of the available body idea. This thorough investigation on the construction of a dance body in the 20th century reveals that there is a connection between the available body cultural production and a certain idea of freedom. What is then the actual meaning of this term? In order to answer this question, the second part of the study involves an almost two year ethnography undertaken with companies creating new work. The observation of the use of the body in work context, between dancers and choreographers, provides information on this knowledge-practice available body: it is used by the dancers and choreographers to develop new corporealities. More specifically, the way the availability of the body is brought up to date in the daily creative work process in dance is examined, testing the hypothesis that the body regarded as available within the professional field is never isolated from the Bourdieusian disposition concept. We will thus discuss how do availabilities and dispositions adjust themselves so that to make intelligible this available body knowledge. The last phase of our study will be devoted to the development of this knowledge: How do dancers use this available body knowledge in the profession? And how does this knowledge disseminate to other areas of practice?

L'évaluation des politiques publiques : cadres conceptuel et étude de son utilisation par les décideurs des institutions régionales de santé en France / Evaluation of public policies : a conceptual framework and a study of its use by the decision-makers of the health regional institutions in France

Jabot, Françoise 12 November 2014 (has links)
However, in the health sector which faces multiple challenges, evaluation should be a useful approach to select choices. The use of evaluation depends on multiple factors such as, knowledge and its production process, characteristics of decision makers and others users, and the political and institutional context of the evaluation Objective: The objectives were: to assess the use of evaluation on health policies; to identify levers associated with use; to assess the capacity of evaluation to fit with decision-makers needs and to enhance usability. Method: Literature review allowed to enrich the understanding of the concept of use and to identify the main influent factors as well as the related issues. Regarding evaluation as a complex system, a model based on a systemic approach was built and tested in evaluations of regional public health plans (PRSP) in 4 steps: (1) global analysis of 16 evaluations; (2) relation process/use in on region; (3) use at short/medium term in 9 regions; (4) case studies and multicriteria analysis in 5 regions. Results: A first analysis enlighted the context and the contribution of the PRSP to the coherence of regional policies. A deeper process analysis carried out in one region pointed out the relation between final aims, management and evaluation use. The examination of evaluation consequences conducted in nine regions identified different forms of use and the major factors associated with them. The dynamic of change has been apprehended as a whole through the interactions between context, users and evaluation in five regions. Discussion: The effects of evaluation are more obvious in terms of knowledge building and evolution of practice than in radical change of policies. Context, evaluation credibility, actors’ commitment and motivation are key factors. Future research should help to better understand how to foster the culture and the capacities of evaluation. These are important prerequisites to a wider use of evaluation

The main point observed was the knowledge dissemination process and its consistency between the discourse and practice of cooperative principle - education, training and information - as a differentiator in knowledge management and organizational model. The study was intended to answer three questions: (a) how the knowledge dissemination process occurs in cooperative organizations, (b) what the perception of employees in relation to the knowledge dissemination process is and (c) as a cooperative organization invests in development of their intellectual capital. Thus the general aim was to verify, from the cooperative principles, the knowledge process used in COCAMAR-PR cooperative; the specific objectives were (1) identify how the knowledge dissemination process occurs, (2) identify the collaborators perception in relation to knowledge dissemination process and (3) verify how the knowledge dissemination process serves the prerogatives of the three principles cited above. The method chosen was the case study, whose cooperative is located in Maringa, Parana. The survey is characterized as being exploratory and descriptive. The results obtained in the research intended to demonstrate the increasing distance of the cooperative from one of its fundamental principles, despite having an intensive professional training schedule.(AU) / A presente pesquisa propõe um estudo teórico-empírico em torno da gestão do conhecimento, tendo como recorte o processo de disseminação do conhecimento e a coerência entre o discurso e a prática do princípio cooperativista (educação, formação e informação) como diferenciador na gestão do conhecimento e no modelo organizacional cooperativista.

Leveraging Customer Information in New Service Development : An Exploratory Study Within the Telecom Industry

Beijer, Sebastian, Magnusson, Per January 2018 (has links)
There is an increasing pressure on service firms to innovate and compete on new offerings. As our lives become more digitized through the ubiquitous connectivity by the usage of digital devices, companies are now able to collect vast amount of various data in real-time, and thus, know radically more about their customers. Companies could leverage on this growing body of data and developing relevant services based on customer demands accordingly. One industry compelled to benefit by utilizing customer information is the telecom industry due to fierce competition and a need of innovation in a saturated market. Hence, the purpose of this study is to investigate how telecom companies use customer information in their development process of new services by answering the research question: How do telecom companies use customer information within their New Service Development process? To illuminate this, a qualitative research was conducted on three Swedish telecom companies. The findings indicate that telecom companies possess a beneficial position since they are able to collect a vast amount of data about their customers due to the digital nature of their services. However, they struggle to efficiently integrate the data and seamlessly disseminate the obtained knowledge internally. Hence, leveraging customer information in new service development has not reached its full potential and how well it is incorporated is determined by the skills of key employees and their collaboration rather than deployed internal processes.
