An Inquisitive Gaze: Exploring the Male Gaze and the Portrayal of Gender in Dragon Age: Inquisition

Lööf, Jenny January 2015 (has links)
This paper provides an account of how a normative male gaze is produced and upheld even in a video game famed for its inclusive nature, Dragon Age: Inquisition. The analysis originates in content studies concerning the portrayal of gender in video games in relation to in-game physical gender portrayal. It is followed by a contextualization of specific video sequences and certain game mechanics in relation to Laura Mulvey’s feminist film theory about the Male Gaze. Mulvey’s film theory approach, while useful as an intellectual tool, is not developed to be applied to video games and thus it is also necessary to consider any implications related to the interactivity of the game. As characters are subjected to a gendered male gaze in relation to both their physical appearance and attributes they are made to uphold the normative status quo. The Gaze is evident in how characters are portrayed, how the main character becomes a default male character regardless of actual gender and in the construction of women as something other. But most importantly, in the actual game mechanics through which all characters become objects for the player to use either in combat or to own in the guise of offering romance to the narrative.

Lindqvist, Maria January 2018 (has links)

Cidade, Tiago Vinícius 17 August 2012 (has links)
Submitted by Marcelo Teixeira (mvteixeira@ucs.br) on 2014-07-03T18:37:47Z No. of bitstreams: 1 Dissertacao Tiago Vinicius Cidade.pdf: 1109429 bytes, checksum: 7aab584e64f71ba5ad9d14d8023697fd (MD5) / Made available in DSpace on 2014-07-03T18:37:47Z (GMT). For centuries, women remained silenced, withstanding the condition of domination imposed to them, mainly because the differences of their body compared to men. However, little by little, the female gender starts to fight for their social equality, acomplishing, up to a certain point, similar rights of those of men. Even so, the difficulty to equal the rights between both genders is still veiled in our society. This work analyses, from the perspective of Cultural Studies of Gender, significant elements of female representation and their sexuality, represented in "A noiva escura", by Laura Restrepo, with the intention of discussing the subversion or not of the patriarcal speech by means of women's sexuality use. Then, the hipotesis defended is of the women, choosing prostitution as a mean of survival, as well as pleasure itself, puts themselves away from male dominance. It's also needed to emphysize, by stimulating the division of genders, society represented in narrative holds high the values based on patriarcal ways, remains to female move on their sexuality. In this way, the deconstruction of the opposition man/woman and the other oppositions associated with one, in the narrated universe happens by female sexuality, represented by the main character – Sayonara, the prostitute.

“Almost Astronauts”: Short Stories

Miller, Laura I. 05 1900 (has links)
In this collection of short stories, I abduct experiences from my own life and take them on an imaginative journey. I experiment with elements of structure and point of view, often incorporating the magical or surreal to amplify the narrator’s internal landscape. As demonstrated in the title story, “Almost Astronauts,” these stories all deal with a sudden and sometimes destructive shift in the narrator’s perspective.
