Musculoskeletal Pain among Health Care Staff : Riskfactors for Pain, Disability and Sick leave

The present thesis is based on four empirical studies concerning risk factors related to musculoskeletal pain (MSP), disability, and sick leave among three non-clinical samples of health care staff. Initially, in Study I, cognitive, behavioural and environmental factors related to MSP of nurses' aides<b> </b>were explored. An experimental design including baseline, intervention and follow-ups among 29 nurses' aides<b> </b>working in a home for the elderly was used to evaluate effects of a workplace intervention based on cognitive behaviour (CB)- and conventional, symptom reduction principles. In Study II, a cross-sectional and correlational design was applied. A self-administered questionnaire was used to describe and investigate the relationship between risk factors and development of persistent pain, sick leave and long sick leave among 914 municipal health care staff. In Study III and IV, a longitudinal design was used among 200 registered nurses (RN) working in a county hospital to describe and predict pain, disability and sick leave. Data collection involved two self-administered questionnaires covering: 1) work and personal factors, pain, disability and sick leave at baseline and 2) valued life dimensions at baseline. The results showed that MSP was common among the staff. Study I showed positive effects among nurses' aides<b> </b>receiving the CB principles related to MSP compared with nurses' aides receiving the conventional principles. In Study II, pain severity and expectations to be working in 6 months were associated with persistent MSP and sick leave, respectively. In Study III, pain, disability and sick leave at baseline were the strongest predictors of pain, disability and sick leave at the three-year follow-up. In Study IV, the findings support the notion that individual values in different life domains are possible predictors of pain and disability.

This is a panel study of 148 students between the ages of 16 and 19 who are enrolled in a three year practical nursing education programme. The aim of the study is to investigate the socialisation process into the nursing world by studying specific attitudes towards nursing, elderly people and general life values and beliefs. Another aim is to locate this groups position in the nursing education context. Part of the study is a description of differences between registered and practical nurses. Some of these are their professionalism, their attitudes to knowledge, their respective trade union actions and the development of a hospital culture. The development of a separated and a coordinated education route for registered and practical and nurses is also analysed. Data for the panel study were collected every year by questionnaires and groups discussions. The results show that the majority of the students are empathetic towards patients. The majority have also had difficult experiences during their student nursing practice associated with their encounter with death. Two out of five students spend a considerable amount of time with elderly. Most respondents experience a sense of security from the elderly and feel that what they have to say is important. Approximately 30 percent of the students give helping the elderly as the reason for entering the practical nursing programme. However, only about 11 percent want to work with the elderly in their future jobs as practical nurses. The majority of the students feel that life is meaningful and almost half of them regard their future prospects as bright. The only apparent connection between different attitudes is the one between religious belief and wanting to work with old people. A larger share of religious students are prepared to work in old age care. The dissertation is about quality of life in children's homes and children referred to foster family care in Central Bohemian Region. Theoretical part charecterizes quality of life, needs and rights of a child, family and their functions. In next part it describes foster care, deals with foster family care, institutional care and question of transformation and unification of system of care of endangered children in The Czech Republic. The empirical part is pointed to comparison overall quality of children life in children's homes and foster care, their orientation in values, satisfaction in particular parts of their life. The results point to spheres where stated groups are different, where are the same and offer possibilities for next research in this area.

Personal values and meaning of life values are desirable and with always changing situations which change in importance and serve as basic principles on a person life, and the meaning of life values are a guide to existence of social entities in league with the objective that it takes for their existence. Five hundred and twenty-two employees from a private organization in financial business take part of the research, and to those employees two valid questionnaires were given for constructs measure. Four hundred and thirty-seven cases were valid after data interpretation according with the kind of participation in the social mobilization program. By using variation analysis technique was acknowledged that employees who take more responsibility on social mobilization program by visit cities where the projects are performed show average increase in universalism personal values, related to propagation of welfare on society; encourage related to the search for innovations and challenges at the same time when conformance values are less worth, related to maintain status quo. In relation with meaning of life values they show better average than other groups in Spiritual Evolution. / Valores pessoais e valores de sentido de vida são metas desejáveis e transsituacionais, que variam em importância e servem como princípios gerais na vida de uma pessoa, sendo os valores de sentido de vida princípios orientadores da vida de entidades sociais, associados à missão que esta assume para sua existência. Este estudo, de natureza descritivo-exploratória, utilizando o método quantitavivo, teve como objetivo verificar se existem diferenças na importância dos valores pessoais e de sentido de vida dos empregados de uma instituição financeira, em função do tipo de participação que eles assumem nas diferentes etapas do programa de mobilização social instituído pela empresa em que atuam, em favor da defesa dos direitos da criança e do adolescente. Participaram da pesquisa 522 empregados, aos quais foram aplicados dois questionários validados para mensuração dos construtos. Após o tratamento de dados, 437 casos foram considerados válidos e distribuídos em três grupos de acordo com o tipo de participação no programa de mobilização social. Utilizando-se a técnica de análise da variância, foi identificado que os empregados que assumem maior responsabilidade no programa de mobilização social, realizando visitas aos municípios onde os projetos são desenvolvidos, apresentam maiores médias nos valores pessoais de universalismo, relacionados a metas de promoção de bem-estar da sociedade, de estimulação, relacionados a busca de novidades e desafios; ao mesmo tempo em que valorizam menos valores de conformidade, relacionados à manutenção do status quo. Em relação aos valores de sentido de vida, apresentam maiores médias do que os demais grupos em Evolução Espiritual.

Объектом исследования явилось отношение к смерти. Предметом исследования – связь отношения к смерти с личностными характеристиками и смысложизненными ориентациями людей разного возраста. Магистерская диссертация состоит из введения, двух глав, заключения, списка литературы (60 источников) и приложений, включающих в себя бланки применявшихся методик, а также результаты описательной статистики Объем магистерской диссертации 87 страниц, на которых размещены 2 рисунка и 12 таблиц. Во введении раскрывается актуальность проблемы исследования, разработанность проблематики, ставятся цель и задачи исследования, определяются объект и предмет исследования, формулируются основная и дополнительные гипотезы, указываются методы и эмпирическая база, а также этапы проведения исследования, научная новизна, теоретическая и практическая значимость работы. Первый раздел включает в себя обзор иностранной и отечественной литературы по теме отношения к смерти. Представлены разделы, посвященные отношению к смерти в разные возрастные периоды, а также подходы к понятиям личностные характеристики и смысложизненных ориентации. Выводы по первому разделу представляют собой итоги по изучению теоретического материала. Второй раздел посвящен эмпирической части исследования. В ней представлено описание организации и методов проведенного исследования и результатов, полученных по всем использованным методикам: 1. Пятифакторный личностный опросник» Р. МакКрае – П. Коста. 2. Опросник «Профиль аттитьюдов по отношению к смерти – переработанный» (DAP-R) П. Т. П. Вонга, Г. Т. Рикера и Дж. Гессера. 3. Тест «Отношение к смерти И. Ю. Кулагиной и Л. В. Сенкевич. 4. Тест смысложизненных ориентаций Д. А. Леонтьева. Также в главе представлен корреляционный анализ результатов исследования. Выводы по разделу 2 включают в себя основные результаты эмпирического исследования. В заключении в обобщенном виде изложены результаты теоретической и эмпирической частей работы, а также выводы по выдвинутым гипотезам, обоснована практическая значимость исследования и описаны возможные перспективы дальнейшей разработки данной проблематики. / The object of the study was the attitude to death. The subject of the study is the relationship of attitudes to death with personal characteristics and life–meaning orientations of people of different ages. The master's thesis consists of an introduction, two chapters, a conclusion, a list of references (60 sources) and appendices, including forms of the methods used, as well as the results of descriptive statistics. The volume of the master's thesis is 87pages, which contain 2 figures and 12 tables. The introduction reveals the relevance of the research problem, the elaboration of the problem, sets the purpose and objectives of the study, defines the object and subject of the study, formulates the main and additional hypotheses, specifies the methods and empirical base, as well as the stages of research, scientific novelty, theoretical and practical significance of the work. The first section includes a review of foreign and domestic literature on the topic of attitudes to death. The sections devoted to the attitude to death in different age periods, as well as approaches to the concepts of personal characteristics and life orientations are presented. The conclusions of the first section are the results of the study of theoretical material. The second section is devoted to the empirical part of the study. It provides a description of the organization and methods of the study and the results obtained by all the methods used: 1. Five-factor personality questionnaire" R. McCrae – P. Costa. 2. Questionnaire "Attitudes profile in relation to death – revised" (DAP-R) by P. T. P. Wong, G. T. Riker and J. Gessera. 3. Test "Attitude to the death of I. Y. Kulagina and L. V. Senkevich. 4. Test of life orientations by D. A. Leontiev. The chapter also presents a correlation analysis of the results of the study. The conclusions of section 2 include the main results of the empirical study. In conclusion, the results of the theoretical and empirical parts of the work are summarized, as well as conclusions on the hypotheses put forward, the practical significance of the study is substantiated and possible prospects for further development of this problem are described.
