A study on wireless communication error performance and path loss predictionIsnin, Ismail January 2011 (has links)
One channel model that characterises multipath fading effect of a wireless channel is called Flat Rayleigh Fading channel model. Given the properties of Flat Rayleigh Fading channel, an equation to find the capacity of a Flat Rayleigh fading channel with hard decision decoding is derived. The difference of power requirement to achieve the Additive White Gaussian Noise (AWGN) capacity over a Flat Rayleigh Fading channel fading is found to increase exponentially with Es /N0 . Upper and lower bounds of error performance of linear block codes over a Flat Rayleigh Fading channel are also studied. With the condition that the excess delay of a channel is known earlier, it is shown that a correlator with shorter length, according to excess delay of the channel, can be constructed for use in wireless channel response measurements. Therefore, a rule of construction of a shorter length correlator is defined, involving concatenation of parts of a Constant Amplitude Zero Auto-Correlation (CAZAC) sequence. Simulation of [136,68,24] Double Circulant Code with Dorsch List Decoding is also done in order to evaluate error performance of the channel coding scheme over one of the IEEE Wireless Metropolitan Area Network (WirelessMAN) channel models, the Stanford University Interim Channel Model No. 5 (SUI-5) channel. Performance of the channel cod- ing was severely degraded over the SUI-5 channel when it is compared to its performance over the AWGN channel. Indoor path losses within three multifloor office buildings were investigated at 433 MHz, 869 MHz and 1249 MHz. The work involved series of extensive received signal strength measurements within the buildings for all of the considered frequencies. Results have shown that indoor path loss is higher within a square footprint building than indoor path loss in a rectangular building. Parameters of Log-Distance Path Loss and Floor Attenuation Factor Path Loss models have been derived from the measurement data. In addition, a new indoor path loss prediction model was derived to cater for path loss pre- diction within multifloor buildings with indoor atriums. The model performs with better prediction accuracy when compared with Log-Distance Path Loss and Floor Attenuation Factor Path Loss models.

Estimation of Kinetic Parameters From List-Mode Data Using an Indirect ApproachOrtiz, Joseph Christian, Ortiz, Joseph Christian January 2016 (has links)
This dissertation explores the possibility of using an imaging approach to model classical pharmacokinetic (PK) problems. The kinetic parameters which describe the uptake rates of a drug within a biological system, are parameters of interest. Knowledge of the drug uptake in a system is useful in expediting the drug development process, as well as providing a dosage regimen for patients. Traditionally, the uptake rate of a drug in a system is obtained via sampling the concentration of the drug in a central compartment, usually the blood, and fitting the data to a curve. In a system consisting of multiple compartments, the number of kinetic parameters is proportional to the number of compartments, and in classical PK experiments, the number of identifiable parameters is less than the total number of parameters. Using an imaging approach to model classical PK problems, the support region of each compartment within the system will be exactly known, and all the kinetic parameters are uniquely identifiable. To solve for the kinetic parameters, an indirect approach, which is a two part process, was used. First the compartmental activity was obtained from data, and next the kinetic parameters were estimated. The novel aspect of the research is using listmode data to obtain the activity curves from a system as opposed to a traditional binned approach. Using techniques from information theoretic learning, particularly kernel density estimation, a non-parametric probability density function for the voltage outputs on each photo-multiplier tube, for each event, was generated on the fly, which was used in a least squares optimization routine to estimate the compartmental activity. The estimability of the activity curves for varying noise levels as well as time sample densities were explored. Once an estimate for the activity was obtained, the kinetic parameters were obtained using multiple cost functions, and the compared to each other using the mean squared error as the figure of merit.

Social network analysis (SNA) provides tools to examine relationships between people. Text mining (TM) allows capturing the text they produce in Web 2.0 applications, for example, however it neglects their social structure. This paper applies an approach to combine the two methods named "content-based SNA" (CB-SNA). Using the R mailing lists, R-help and R-devel, we show how this combination can be used to describe people's interests and to find out if authors who have similar interests actually communicate. We find that the expected positive relationship between sharing interests and communicating gets stronger as the centrality scores of authors in the communication networks increase. / Series: Research Report Series / Department of Statistics and Mathematics

Coloring the Square of Planar Graphs Without 4-Cycles or 5-CyclesJaeger, Robert 01 January 2015 (has links)
The famous Four Color Theorem states that any planar graph can be properly colored using at most four colors. However, if we want to properly color the square of a planar graph (or alternatively, color the graph using distinct colors on vertices at distance up to two from each other), we will always require at least \Delta + 1 colors, where \Delta is the maximum degree in the graph. For all \Delta, Wegner constructed planar graphs (even without 3-cycles) that require about \frac{3}{2} \Delta colors for such a coloring.
To prove a stronger upper bound, we consider only planar graphs that contain no 4-cycles and no 5-cycles (but which may contain 3-cycles). Zhu, Lu, Wang, and Chen showed that for a graph G in this class with \Delta \ge 9, we can color G^2 using no more than \Delta + 5 colors. In this thesis we improve this result, showing that for a planar graph G with maximum degree \Delta \ge 32 having no 4-cycles and no 5-cycles, at most \Delta + 3 colors are needed to properly color G^2. Our approach uses the discharging method, and the result extends to list-coloring and other related coloring concepts as well.

Factors Influencing Applicant Ranking of Orthodontic ProgramsPayne, Michael D. 01 January 2004 (has links)
Orthodontic programs spend considerable amounts of time and energy to attract, recruit, and interview the best and brightest applicants. Applicants and programs submit ranked preferences, and resident positions are filled by a computerized matching system (Match). The specific aims of this study were to determine the relative importance of certain factors in applicants' Match ranking of orthodontic programs and to determine differences between orthodontic Program Directors perceptions and actual factors cited by applicants influencing their ranking of orthodontic programs.Surveys were mailed to 55 orthodontic Program Directors and 478 applicants participating in the 2002 orthodontic Match. Forty-nine Program Director (89%) and 224 applicant (47%) surveys were returned. Rankings and importance of factors cited by applicants in their decision-making process and perceptions of those factors cited by Program Directors were compared.Applicants' top three factors were: "satisfied current residents," "multiple techniques taught," and "good quality of clinical facility." Program Directors' perceived top three factors were: "satisfied current residents," "good program reputation," and "good impression of current residents at interview." Comparing Program Directors perceptions versus applicants' factors overall, the two groups were statistically different (P Despite these differences, there was generally a high level of overall agreement between Program Directors perceptions and factors actually influencing applicants' ranking of orthodontic programs.

Title: Creation and verification of educational programs for students of lower secondary education in ZOO Pilsen The diploma thesis is focused on the ZOOs in the Czech Republic and their educational activities. The most examined one is Zoological and botanical garden in Pilsen, for which I created two educational programs including worksheets for students and teachers. The educational programs were then tested at a selected group of students from 8th grade of lower secondary school. The evaluation was based on the success of students in solving tasks in the worksheets. The practical output of this thesis are designed educational programs (methodology for teacher) and worksheets for ZOO Pilsen (programs Mysterious Africa, Far Australia) including correct solution.

The aim of this work is to describe the language of several important tabloids in the First Czechoslovak Republic. Firstly, sensationalist journalism is defined by different criteria and is distinguished from serious journalism. The development of sensationalist journalism in Czech lands is outlined and the press in the First Czechoslovak Republic is characterized. Then, selected tabloids are characterized and evaluated according to the defined criteria of tabloids. Language in journalistic texts is put into broader context of journalistic style and is considered on the basis of the influences that affect the choice of the specific language means. One chapter is devoted to formal and language aspects of headlines of the tabloids. The headlines are described on lexical level, morphological level and syntactic level. The language of the tabloids itself is analyzed on the same levels, on the lexical, morphological and syntactic level. The tabloid press in the First Czechoslovak Republic is compared to contemporary tabloid press and some tendencies of the development of the tabloid press are outlined.

Emphasis is placed on finding new trends that appear in tender leaves that are different from previous forms of list of advertisement options, as presented earlier literature. Methods: As a crucial method applied in this diploma thesis is considered content analysis. Additionally it was used as an analysis of documents and literature review. Results: According to available results show that the highest quality of tender leaf has a football club AC Sparta Praha. It offers on the Czech situation deluxe return for sponsorship. Other clubs bid sheet are much less sophisticated, but the differences between them are minimal. Diploma thesis shows the growing trend of new services partner of football clubs compared Čáslavová monograph (2009). It was found that the individual invitations to sheets appears additional 38 new areas related to the history, location and success of a particular football club. Les sujets âgés sont souvent atteints de nombreuses comorbidités. Leur prise en charge thérapeutique selon les recommandations en vigueur peut être à l’origine d’une polymédication. La prescription de psychotropes est fréquemment retrouvée dans les traitements des sujets âgés. Cette classe thérapeutique est à haut risque iatrogène potentiel dans cette population vulnérable. Les effets indésirables médicamenteux les plus notables sont les chutes, les fractures et les troubles confusionnels. L’identification des psychotropes potentiellement inappropriés (PPI) chez les sujets âgés à l’aide de la liste de Beers a fait l’objet de peu de travaux.Les objectifs de cette thèse étaient d’identifier les prescriptions de psychotropes potentiellement inappropriés (PPI) à l’aide des listes de Beers actualisées dans les traitements de sujets hospitalisés ou vivant en Etablissement d’hébergement pour personnes âgées dépendantes (EHPAD). Les facteurs liés à ces prescriptions ont aussi été recherchés.La polymédication, ainsi que les troubles neuropsychiatriques du sujet âgé doivent rendre le prescripteur de psychotropes particulièrement vigilant dans cette population particulièrement vulnérable.L’usage des listes de médicaments potentiellement inappropriés (MPI) pourrait permettre d’identifier les psychotropes au rapport bénéfice risque défavorable chez les sujets âgés. Et orienter le choix du prescripteur vers des traitements plus favorables au patient. / Elderly people often have many comorbidities. Therapeutic management according to the recommendations in force may be at the origin of a polymedication. The prescription of psychotropic drugs is frequently found in the treatment of elderly patients. This therapeutic class is at high potential iatrogenic risk in this vulnerable population. The most notable adverse drug reactions are falls, fractures and confusion. The identification of potentially inappropriate psychotropic medications (PIP) in elderly subjects using the Beers list has received little attention.The objective of this thesis was to identify the prescriptions of potentially inappropriate psychotropic drugs (PIP) using the updated Beers lists in the treatment of subjects hospitalized or living in the nursing home. Factors related to these treatment s were also investigated.Polymedication, as well as neuropsychiatric disorders in the elderly, should make the prescriber of psychotropic drugs particularly vigilant in this particularly vulnerable population.The use of lists of potentially inappropriate medications (PIM) could identify psychotropic drugs with an unfavorable risk-benefit ratio in elderly subjects. And direct the choice of the prescriber towards treatments more favorable to the patient.
