Use of The Distress Thermometer for the Elderly (DTE) in the Identification of Distress and Need in Nursing and Care Homes

Dilworth, J. A., Thomas, K., Sawkins, N., Oyebode, Jan 03 May 2011 (has links)
Yes / Previous studies have found high levels of undetected psychological distress and unaddressed need among care home residents. The aim of this study was to investigate the usability and usefulness of the Distress Thermometer for the Elderly (DTE; modified from a measure used in cancer care) in the identification of distress and need with older people in care homes. Method: This was a single group, cross-sectional study. Staff in 12 nursing homes and one care home in England completed the DTE and a measure of depression with their older residents (n = 66). Quantitative methods were employed to investigate the relationship between the Distress Thermometer rating, depression scores and problems or needs selected on the DTE. Results: The DTE was found to be feasible for completion by residents with assistance from staff. The level of distress on the DTE was significantly related to depression, number of problems and practical–physical problems. Each of 50 problems in the checklist was checked by at least one of the respondents. More problem items and physical–practical problems were selected by individuals who reached clinical levels of depression. Conclusions: In this preliminary study, results indicate promising potential for the use of the DTE as a simple screening tool for distress, as well as to enable residents to record their perceived needs as part of care-planning and a broader person-centred approach.

An Analysis of College Student Problems as Indicated on the Mooney Problem Check List

Hood, Gary Kyle 08 1900 (has links)
This study examines personal problems which a selected group of 1970's college freshmen at North Texas State University considered important to them and investigates significant changes in the nature, configuration, and frequency of these problems from those indicated by selected freshmen of the 1960's and 1950's. None of the wide variety of previous approaches over the years in studying problems of students has presented such a broad time span as this study. The students of the 1950's and 1960's were North Texas State University freshmen enrolled in Education 161, "The Psychology of Social and Personal Adjustment." The 1970's population was taken from basic freshman English courses at North Texas State University. All students were administered the Mooney Problem Check List, and the results were prepared for computer analysis. An analysis-of-variance program was used on eight hypotheses, with a .05 level of significance required for the hypotheses to be retained. The Spearman Rank Order Correlation Coefficient was used in answering two hypotheses. There were 2,809 freshmen from the 1950's, 1,440 from the 1960's, and 695 from the 1970's.

Att hoppas på det bästa, men vara förberedd på det värsta : Patientens upplevelse på väntan på en organtransplantation / To hope for the best and be prepare for the worst : The patient's experiences of waiting for an organ transplant

Axelsson, Jonatan, Frandsen, Julia January 2020 (has links)
Background: Organ transplantation is a routine treatment in modern healthcare. Due to lack of organs in relation to the need, waiting is increased which causes anxiety and fear for patients. When a person is placed on the waiting list, an organ transplant is the last resort since the organ is highly damaged. Aim: The aim was to illustrate the patient’s experience of waiting for an organ transplant. Method: This study is a literature study and have an inductive approach and is based on eight articles. The data was analyzed and categorized in regard to the aim. Results: The result reports three categories and associated subcategories; Feelings about waiting for an organ transplant, The need for support and information and A limited life. Patients experience uncertainty and anxiety during the waiting time and a fear of death alongside hope. The uncertainty grew with lack of information from care givers. Limitations of daily life perceived tough hence the nursing and family support became paramount, all together creating strategies to inspire hope. Conclusion: The literature study shows that the waiting experience for a transplant is similar around the world. There is a need for information and support from nurses, therefore, the nursing sympathy, information and knowledge is essential in creating a safe environment.

Hur väl stämmer patientens läkemedelslista ”Mina sparade recept” överens med verkligenheten? : En strukturerad intervjustudie på svenska apotek

Mzil, Leila January 2020 (has links)
Background: Discrepancies in patient’s medication list can lead to medication errors which is a major cause of both morbidity and mortality today. The aim of the study was to examine the frequency of discrepancies in the Swedish prescription list “My saved prescriptions” regarding noncurrent treatment, incorrect dosages, double prescriptions, and missing prescriptions. Additionally, the purpose was to examine the type of source of information the patients used regarding their drug treatment.   Methods: Collection of data was conducted through interviews at three different pharmacies over a period of four weeks in Stockholm 2020. Patients 18 years or older with at least three prescribed drugs were asked to participate in the study.   Results: Of 157 patients, 74 patients were included. More than 70% of the patients had one or more discrepancies in their prescription list: a noncurrent, a duplicate or an incorrect dosage. 17.6% had at least one missing prescription. About half of the patients had a noncurrent prescription, which was the most common discrepancy among the patients. More than a third, 35.1%, of the patients used the prescription list as a source of information for their drug treatments. Furthermore, 31.1% of the patients used the drug packaging and 17.6% of them only used their memory. 10.8% of the patients used the medication list from healthcare.  Conclusions: The results suggest that discrepancies were quite common in the prescription list, which can increase the risk of medication errors for patients who use the prescription list as a source of information. The implementation of the Swedish National List (NLL) (launching in 2021) will provide the caregivers, pharmacies, and patients with access to the same information about patient’s prescribed drugs. NLL will hopefully reduce the risk of medication errors and it should lead to a reduced necessity of using several different sources for prescribed drugs.

Fučíková, Petra Unknown Date (has links)
The aim of this thesis is to analyse the current situation in valuation of restoration works during construction work, and then to define and standardize the construction work of stone during the restoration of immovable historical monuments. The dissertation moves further knowledge about the issue of restoration work valuation and brings benefits at both theoretical and practical level. In the first part thesis deals with the detailed definition of basic terms, namely restoration, cultural heritage, calculations and costs. The second part of the thesis is dedicated to international comparisons of the historical monuments care in the Czech Republic and France. The result is a comparison of selected indicators of historical monuments care in the Czech Republic and France. Further the attention in the second part is devoted to the pricing development and standardization in construction and restoration, as well as to the pricing of construction work. The third part of the thesis is dedicated to the actual research work, which is focused on the methodology of determining the price of stone construction work in the restoration of the historical buildings. Based on the results of the research there are presented conclusions and proposals of solutions to the existing issue. It is primarily about defining the scope of the building technical documentation with respect to the requirements of restoration, defining direct and indirect costs and profits of construction work of stone in the restoration of historical buildings. At the end of this section there are defined conclusions from the research, which summarize the determination of price list and its description. An integral part of this dissertation is a proposal for the further development and possible solutions of this specific issue.

Compact Representations of State Sets in State Space Search / Kompakta Representationer av Tillstånd i Tillståndsrymdssökning

Axandersson, Hugo January 2023 (has links)
Modern day technological advancements are moving at a rapid pace. In the field of Artificial Intelligence, algorithms are becoming ever faster and process larger amounts of data. These fast algorithms call for data structures that can store this processed data compactly. This premise also holds true in the AI subfield of planning. In the common planning approach of state space search, found states are memorized as to not unnecessarily revisit them. Research has put a big focus on improving the speed of state space searches which in turn leads to a lot of states being stored. A crucial bottleneck then occurs when memory runs out due to storing these large amounts of states. This is where this project, with its exploration of compact state set representations, comes into the picture. This project's focus is on exploring memory usage for planning by state space search. More specifically, the project investigates compact state set representations for an A* state space search's closed- and open lists. It was hypothesized that the closed list would be the larger of the two which is why a focus was put on testing compact representations of that state set. Results from this project confirm this hypothesis as it is shown that the closed list is the largest and most critical of the two (although the differences between the two become increasingly small for strong heuristics).  Four different state set representations were tested for use as closed lists in an A* algorithm: Level-Ordered Edge Sequences (LOES), compressed LOES (cLOES), Binary Decision Diagram (BDD) and an explicit representation. A primary focus was put on exploring the LOES data structure because of the limited amount of research done on the data structure. Explicit representation was used as the main point of comparison with it being a very commonly used standard in state space search. The results from this project show that LOES managed to lower memory usage significantly for large tasks when compared to the explicit representation. The lower memory usage did, however, come at the cost of speed with LOES being noticeably slower. Although less drastic, the same differences could be seen when comparing LOES to its compressed version, cLOES. Out of all the tested state set representations, cLOES was shown to be the most compact but also the slowest. Moreover, the results indicated that, even if most tasks didn't benefit from the additional compression provided by cLOES in comparison to normal LOES, the tasks that did, benefited a lot. Lastly, the BDD data structure gave more inconclusive results. The poor BDD results were seemingly caused by an unfit implementation for the closed list use case. The results did, however, suggest that BDD was faster but less compact than LOES for large tasks. The different closed list state set representations were also tested with four different heuristics: blind, max, CEGAR and Merge-and-Shrink heuristic. A takeaway from these tests was that stronger heuristics resulted in fewer states being stored in the open- and closed list. Moreover, the closed states made up a smaller portion of the total amount states for the stronger heuristics. This smaller number of stored closed states made, as a consequence, the differences between the tested state set representations less pronounced. For large tasks, however, the closed list did get big enough to experience the effect of the efficient closed list implementations. Conclusively, LOES and cLOES proved strong replacements to explicit representation. Especially in use cases where compactness is more critical than speed such as in embedded systems. Additionally, even though strong heuristics lessened the effect of efficient state set representations, there are still notable advantages to be found for big tasks where the closed list grows large enough.

Apotekskunders informationsunderlag för att hålla reda på ordinerad läkemedelsbehandling / Pharmacy customers' means of support for surveying prescribed drug treatment

Hämäläinen, Sanna January 2018 (has links)
Totalt inkluderade 167 apotekskunder. / Background If patients have access to an adequate and updated list of prescribed drugs it will lead to reduced risk of medication error and thus to better quality of life at the individual level, as well as reduced public spending for medical care. In drug treatment, patient compliance is extremely important, as incorrect medical use can lead to severe consequences. For patients prescribed long-term treatment with drugs, compliance is estimated to be only 50% [1]. There are several different sources patients can utilize to keep updated with their prescribed drugs; The Medication List (ML) from the physicians’ electronic medical record[14]. The Prescription List (PL) with all prescriptions stored in the Swedish National Prescription Repository (NPR) accessible from any pharmacy in Sweden [19]. The Pharmacy Record List (PR) of the purchases on prescriptions made over the past 15-month period[15]. Paper prescriptions[20]. The pharmacy packaging labels[11]. Patients may also access their PL over the internet. Objective The purpose of the study was to investigate, via questionnaire interviews in pharmacies, what sources of information customers used to keep updated in their prescribed drugs. Patients with at least five or more prescription drugs (data from the NPR) were included in the survey. It was also investigated how many customers that had knowledge of and had received a printout of the PL "My stored prescription at the pharmacy" at visits in the pharmacies. It was also investigated to what extent customers had visited a public website, through personal login, to take part of their PL, and how often. Methods This survey is a follow-up of another study "Patients' information on their prescribed current treatment" published in 2012 [25]. In this study customers were recruited from 8 different pharmacies in Sweden. Customers where asked to answer questions from a questionnaire and a drug reconciliation was done. A total of 167 customers, with at least five prescribed drugs, were included. Key findings The majority, 55%, stated that they used the PL printout "My stored prescription at the pharmacy". 39% relied on instructions given on the of drug packages and the pharmacy labels with dosage instructions. 13% of the customers reported that they used the ML handed over from their physician. 8% stated that they used the website via personal login with e-ID to get to the PL ”My stored prescription at the pharmacy”. Conclusion On March 1, 2018, the government decided on the draft bill for a national pharmaceutical list. The list should provide a complete and up-to-date picture of the individual patient's drugs, regardless of who prescribed the drug and where in the country this occurred[19]. Thus, modernity development should lead to a reduced necessity of using several different sources for prescribed drugs, which can hopefully reduce the risk of errors in drug use and increase the overall patient safety.
