EFFECT OF WRIST POSTURE AND FINGERTIP FORCE ON MEDIAN NERVE BLOOD FLOW VELOCITY

Wilson, Elizabeth Katherine 10 1900 (has links)
<p>Carpal tunnel syndrome (CTS) is one of the most prevalent work-related musculoskeletal disorders of the upper extremity yet its etiology remains elusive. Nerve hypervascularization has been proposed as a pathophysiological change in CTS and can be measured using high resolution sonography of intraneural blood flow. The purpose of this study was to determine the effects of deviated wrist postures and fingertip force on the intraneural blood flow velocity of the median nerve proximal to the wrist crease. Ten participants experiencing the classic symptoms of CTS and nine healthy volunteers were recruited and underwent qualitative assessments (Phalen’s test, Katz hand diagram, Levine’s CTS questionnaire). Intraneural blood flow velocity was measured in five wrist postures (flexion 30°, flexion 15°, neutral, extension 15°, extension 30°) with and without a middle digit fingertip press (0N, 6N). A control (N=9) group and a CTS symptomatic (N=9) group were determined, in addition to a CTS individual (N=1) that required a separate analysis. A significant main effect of force was found (F1,16 = 28.039, p < 0.0005) with the mean peak velocity being greater with force (3.56 cm/s) than without force (2.81 cm/s). Wrist posture had a main effect (F4,64 = 3.163, p < 0.020) with flow velocity as neutral (2.87 cm/s) was significantly lower than flexion 30° (3.37 cm/s), flexion 15°(3.27 cm/s) and extension 30° (3.29 cm/s). There was no significant difference in peak blood flow velocity between the two experimental groups, CTS symptomatic (3.34 cm/s) and control (3.03 cm/s) (F1,16 = 4.121, p < 0.059). The results suggest that both force and non-neutral wrist postures may acutely induce vascular changes previously associated with CTS. The quantification of reactive median nerve hypervascularity should be investigated further as it has potential to be both a reliable diagnostic technique and a non-invasive assessment of CTS risk.</p> / Master of Science in Kinesiology

Sedimentological Records and Numerical Simulations of the C.E. 1707 Hōei Tsunami in Southwestern Japan

Baranes, Hannah 23 November 2015 (has links) (PDF)
A tsunami generated by the C.E. 1707 Hōei earthquake is largely thought to be the flood event of record for southwestern Japan, yet historical documentation of the event is scarce. This is particularly true in northwestern Shikoku within the Bungo Channel, where significant inconsistencies exist between historical records and model-derived tsunami heights. To independently assess flooding from the C.E. 1707 Hōei tsunami in the context of the region’s long-term flooding history, we present complementary reconstructions of extreme coastal inundation from three back-barrier lakes in the northern Bungo Channel: Lake Ryuuoo, Lake Amida, and Lake Kamega. At all sites, the most prominent marine overwash deposit of the past ~1,000 years, as defined by grain size, density, and geochemical indicators, is consistent with the timing of the 1707 tsunami, providing strong evidence that the event caused the most significant flooding of the last millennium in this region. At Lake Ryuuoo, modern barrier beach elevations and grain sizes in the tsunami’s resultant deposit provide ~4 m as the first physically based height constraint for the 1707 tsunami in the northern Bungo Channel. Around 1,000 years ago, a concurrent and abrupt transition in lithology observed at all three sites is also consistent with rapid, regional geomorphic change. At Lake Ryuuoo, a marine overwash deposit comparable to the 1707 deposit directly overlies this transition. A 1,000-year-old lithological transition or deposit has not been observed at sites closer to the mouth of the Bungo Channel, suggesting that the deposit in Lake Ryuuoo is more consistent with a tsunami generated by local seismicity along the Japan Median Tectonic Line than with a Nankai Trough-derived tsunami. Our findings are significant in that they provide three new millennial-scale tsunami inundation reconstructions for a relatively understudied region of Japan, along with the first physically based height constraint for the Hōei tsunami in the northern Bungo Channel.

Unstructured mesh methods for stratified turbulent flows

Zhang, Zhao January 2015 (has links)
Developments are reported of unstructured-mesh methods for simulating stratified, turbulent and shear flows. The numerical model employs nonoscillatory forward in-time integrators for anelastic and incompressible flow PDEs, built on Multidimensional Positive Definite Advection Transport Algorithm (MPDATA) and a preconditioned conjugate residual elliptic solver. Finite-volume spatial discretisation adopts an edge-based data structure. Tetrahedral-based and hybrid-based median-dual options for unstructured meshes are developed, enabling flexible spatial resolution. Viscous laminar and detached eddy simulation (DES) flow solvers are developed based on the edge-based NFT MPDATA scheme. The built-in implicit large eddy simulation (ILES) capability of the NFT scheme is also employed and extended to fully unstructured tetrahedral and hybrid meshes. Challenging atmospheric and engineering problems are solved numerically to validate the model and to demonstrate its applications. The numerical problems include simulations of stratified, turbulent and shear flows past obstacles involving complex gravity-wave phenomena in the lee, critical-level laminar-turbulence transitioning and various vortex structures in the wake. Qualitative flow patterns and quantitative data analysis are both presented in the current study.

Avaliação da sensibilidade cutânea em pacientes com lesões agudas de nervos periféricos de membros superiores / Assessment the cutaneous sensibility in acute peripheral upper limb nerve trauma

Aguilera, Nelio Watanabe 10 November 2010 (has links)
The human hand has an important sensorial capacity to perceive, to localize and to distinguish simultaneously, in the act of touch. Peripheral nerve injury at upper limb have seriously functional and social disabilities: a hand without sensibility is usually a hand without function. This study has the purpose to use the PSSD (Pressure-specified sensory device) in patients submitted to microsurgical reconstructions of peripheral upper limb nerves to evaluate the cutaneous sensibility recovery. The PSSD is a tool that incorporates a pressure transducer with two prongs, linked to a computer capable of measuring the cutaneous pressure thresholds referred by the patient. In this study, the patients were divided in three groups: patients with median or ulnar nerve trauma at forearm, wrist or digital levels. The statistical analysis method used to compare the groups and considering different moments in the study of 1, 3, 6 and 12 months was the analysis of variance (ANOVA). The results demonstrate interaction between groups where the generalized mean showed statistical relevance for the parameters of the study as well as the time grows. The digital nerve injuries considering all parameters evaluated revealed the smaller values of cutaneous pressure thresholds followed by the results of the wrist and in the last the forearm cutaneous pressure thresholds values. There were no statistical significance between the median and the ulnar nerves considering the values of the cutaneous sensibility thresholds

Papel da via Núcleo Mediano da Rafe-Hipocampo Dorsal nos efeitos antidepressivos do tratamento com Imipramina / Role of Median Raphe Nucleus- Dorsal Hippocampus pathway in the antidepressant effects of treatment with imipramine.

Silva, Kelly da 31 March 2011 (has links)
Introduction: Depression is a psychiatric disorder whose causes seem to involve chronic exposure to stressors. It is known that the dorsal hippocampus (DH) participates in the adaptation mechanism to aversive stimuli, once the facilitation of serotonergic neurotransmission in this structure reduces the effect of a stressor. The main source of serotonergic innervation to the HD is the median raphe nucleus (MRN). Aim: The aim of this study was to verify if the integrity of the MRN-HD pathway is essential for the antidepressant effects of chronic treatment with imipramine in animals with lesion on serotonergic neurons of MRN submitted to chronic and repeated stress. Materials and Methods: We used male Wistar rats, seven weeks old. The animals were submitted to stereotactic surgery for lesion (or not - control group) on MRN serotonergic neurons. Later, they were divided in groups according to the chronic drug treatment they would receive (Imipramine or Saline). All animals were subjected to chronic (7days/Two hours a day) or acute restraint stress (a single episode of restraint). On the eighth day the animals were tested in the Elevated Plus Maze (EPM). Results: When subjected to acute stress, animals with intact MRN and treated with imipramine showed a higher percentage of time spent in open arms (% TO) and the number of entries in open arms (% FO) when compared to control. Moreover, rats subjected to acute stress and chemically injured showed a greater exploration of open arms (% TO and % FO) when compared with the group without lesion. Imipramine was able to attenuate the effects of stress on animals subjected to chronic stress from both groups, with intact MRN and those with lesion. That was observed on a increase of % TO and % FO when compared with rats treated with saline. The injury on MNR in animals submitted to chronic stress decreased both %TO and % FO. Discussion: Our results showed that the lesion on serotonergic neurons of MNR dont interfere in the behavior of animals in the EPM when subjected to a single stress episode, but decreases the open arm exploration in rats exposed to chronic stress. This effect, however, was attenuated by chronic administration of imipramine. Conclusion: These results suggest that the integrity of the NMnR-HD pathway is not essential for the antidepressant effects Imipramine in the development of tolerance to repeated stress.

Envolvimento de diferentes sub-regiões do núcleo dorsal da rafe de ratos na mediação de respostas defensivas associadas à ansiedade e ao medo / Differential involvement of dorsal raphe subregions in the regulation of defensive responses associated with anxiety and fear.

Spiacci Junior, Ailton 30 October 2012 (has links)
The dorsal raphe nucleus (DRN) is the main source of serotonergic projections that innervate the limbic system. A wealth of evidence indicates that the DRN is a complex structure composed by topographically organized sub-regions with distinct functional and neurochemical properties. It have been proposed that two serotonergic pathways originating in the DRN, the forebrain and periventricular tracts, distinctly modulate defensive behaviors associated with generalized anxiety disorder and panic disorder. The present study addressed the hypothesis that the two defensive responses evoked by the elevated T maze (ETM), i.e. escape and inhibitory avoidance which have been related to generalized anxiety and panic disorders, respectively, would recruit different subregions of the DRN. In the first part of this work, the number of doubly-immunostained cells for Fos protein and tryptophan hydroxylase, a marker of serotonergic neurons, was assessed within the rat DRN, median raphe nucleus (MRN) and PAG following inhibitory avoidance and escape performance in the ETM. Our results showed that these two defensive responses recruited distinct neuronal populations within the DRN, MRN and PAG. While serotonergic neurons located at the middle and caudal level of the DRN, specifically within the sub-regions dorsal (DRD), caudal (DRC) and interfascicular (DRI), and the MRN are implicated in the acquistion of inhibitory avoidance, nonserotonergic neurons in lateral wings (lwDR) of the DRN /ventrolateralPAG and the dorsal columns of PAG are implicated in the escape expression. In the second part of this study, we evaluated the effects caused by the administration of AMPA/kainate receptor agonist, kainic acid, into the DRD, DRC and lwDR of rats tested in the ETM. The results showed that injection of kainic acid into DRD and DRC facilitated inhibitory avoidance acquisition and impaired escape expression. On the other hand, stimulation of the lwDR by kainic acid facilitated escape expression, without interfering with inhibitory avoidance acquisition. Opposite effect on escape behavior was observed in this region followed injection of cobalt chloride, a synaptic transmission inhibitor. Our results also showed that administration of higher doses of kainic acid into the lwDR promptly evoked a vigorous escape reaction in animals tested in a circular arena. Finally, we evaluated the involvement of GABAA and CRF1 receptor-mediated neurotransmission in the lwDR in the regulation of the escape behavior measured by the ETM. Our results showed that the GABAA receptor antagonist bicuculine injected into the lwDR favored escape expression, without affecting inhibitory avoidance acquisition. On the other hand, local microinjection of the CRF1 receptor antagonist antalarmin impaired the acquisition of inhibitory avoidance, without changing escape expression. Together, our immunohistochemical results indicate the involvement of distinct DRN neuronal subpopulations in the regulation of escape and inhibitory avoidance responses. Our results also suggested that, while serotonergic neurons within the DRD, DRC, DRI and MRN are involved in inhibitory avoidance acquisition, non-serotonergic neurons of the vlPAG, dlPAG and dmPAG are involved in escape expression. The behavioral results with kainic acid indicated that the DRC and DRD may be the origin of the forebrain and periventricular tracts addressed by Deakin & Graeffs theory (1991). Although the lwDR are markedly implicated in escape regulation, specific neuronal populations within this region may also modulate inhibitory avoidance behavior.

Mediação do medo condicionado contextual por mecanismos serotoninérgicos do circuito núcleo mediano da rafe-hipocampo dorsal / Serotonergic mechanisms of the median raphe nucleusdorsal hippocampus in conditioned fear: Output circuit involves the prefrontal cortex and amygdala

Almada, Rafael Carvalho 18 May 2009 (has links)
Moreover, previous findings have also implicated serotonergic mechanisms of the MRN in the retrieval of contextual conditioned fear. However, studies that examine the integrated involvement of serotonergic mechanisms of the MRN-DH are lacking. This study, a fear conditioning paradigm was used to test whether the serotonergic projections from the MRN to DH can influence contextual fear conditioning. Startle and freezing responses were avaliated after administration of serotoninergics drugs into the MRN or DH, 6 h previously rats received footshocks in the training session. A reduction of 5-HT transmission in the MRN by local infusions of the 5-HT1A agonist 8-hydroxy-2-(di-n-propylamino)-tetralin (8-OH-DPAT) decreased freezing in response to the CS but did not reduce fear-potentiated startle. This pattern of results is consistent with the hypothesis that MRN serotonergic mechanisms selectively modulate the freezing response to the aversive context. As for the DH, a decrease in postsynaptic 5-HT receptor activity at projection areas has been proposed to be the main consequence of 5-HT1A receptor activation in the MRN. Infusions of the 5-HT2 receptor antagonist ketanserin into the DH had no effect, but activation of 5-HT1A receptors through intra-DH injections of 8-OH-DPAT inhibited both the freezing and fear-potentiated startle response to the CS. To reconcile these findings, an inhibitory mechanism may exist between the incoming DH 5-HT pathway from the MRN and the presynaptic 5-HT neurons that are part of the DH output to other structures. The DH-amygdala and medial prefrontal cortex projections could well be this output circuit modulating the expression of contextual fear conditioning as revealed by measurements of Fos immunoreactivity in these areas.

Fuzzy Median and Its Applications in Economics and Finance

Unknown Date (has links)
In the society of economic knowledge, Multi-valued logic goes to replace binary logic gradually. In the traditional way, we usually ask the task-taker to response the answer according to the thinking of binary logic. But such kind of response is improper since the human thinking is fuzzy and uncertain. So it should be an improved measurement using membership functions and fuzzy statistics. In this paper, we will propose the definition of fuzzy median, and present some of its application. According to the above theoretical contents, we give some examples, which is used frequently in financial and economic assessment. From the explanation and discussion of fuzzy median in these examples, we can recognize that fuzzy statistics is more meaningful and proper for research of finance and economics. At last, based upon the findings of this study, certain recommendations for further research are suggested.

Constructing Panoramic Scenes From Aerial Videos

Erdem, Elif 01 December 2007 (has links) (PDF)
In this thesis, we address the problem of panoramic scene construction in which a single image covering the entire visible area of the scene is constructed from an aerial image video. In the literature, there are several algorithms developed for construction of panoramic scene of a video sequence. These algorithms can be categorized as feature based and featureless algorithms. In this thesis, we concentrate on the feature based algorithms and comparison of these algorithms is performed for aerial videos. The comparison is performed on video sequences captured by non-stationary cameras, whose optical axis does not have to be the same. In addition, the matching and tracking performances of the algorithms are separately analyzed, their advantages-disadvantages are presented and several modifications are proposed.
