Santana, Catiana Santos Correia 21 November 2016 (has links)
Coordenação de Aperfeiçoamento de Pessoal de Nível Superior - CAPES / This study aims to analyze the chronic gender humoristic from the perspective of Interacionism Sociodiscursive (ISD) of Bronckart ([1999] 2012), trying to understand how the categories of discursive world defined in theoretical proposal ISD help interpret and understand the chronic humorous classroom. Drawing on the notion of chronic humorous genre is defined such text as episodic story that deals with political events or customs of everyday life. Therefore, such texts promote a humorous criticism of social behavior patterns and worldviews established in a certain historical period of polyphonic manner, thus bringing controversial issues to / from social universe. In order to understand how critical are manifested in this kind of discourse, we assume that the production of meaning depends on the finding of intertextual relations, configurational understanding between types of speech, observing the voices of the game and understanding of way of functioning of discourse manifested worlds of implied and autonomously within the chronic. Explicitaremos these discursive relations, from a thematic point of view. This analysis aims at drawing up a pedagogical notebook reading to work the linguageiras capabilities within the chronic, highlighting how teachable understanding of the effect of humor. The methodology is underlies the case study and treatment of the data was done by examining the activities carried out by Sanchez methodology (2016) and Machado (2009), the experience report. / Itabaiana, SE

Reading behaviour of first-year physics students at the University of the North

Ralenala, Molefe Francis 11 September 2012 (has links)
D.Phil. / Reading constitutes a major part of academic activities especially at tertiary level where acquisition of knowledge depends on written texts. For university students in particular, key sources of new knowledge in domains of science, for example, are often textbooks, reference books, journal articles and laboratory manuals. In reading the texts, students are expected either to develop or to review information on their own. Unfortunately many first-year university students have difficulties understanding and acquiring knowledge from texts effectively and efficiently. This problem is often more pronounced among students who have to read through English second language (ESL). This study was prompted by complaints from the University of the North first-year physics lecturers that their first-year students were experiencing serious problems with accessing information from their prescribed texts. A provisional assumption made is that lack of reading strategies combined with lack of cognitive skills made worse by poor English language proficiency are to a great extent responsible for this failure. The aim of this study, therefore, is to explore the reading behaviour of the University of the North first-year students in as far as the learning of physics is concerned. Results show that these students do indeed lack cognitive and metacognitive strategies and that their English proficiency level is below what is expected of them at first year. They are therefore ill-prepared to deal with their prescribed text (physics) through this medium. This study recommends that students should be given explicit instruction in strategy selection and use but that these should be sufficiently flexible to be utilized in a variety of contexts and must eventually be owned by the students themselves for later use. The ultimate goal is for students to use the strategy without guidance from their lecturer

A Comparison of the Linguistic Competence of Learning Disabled and Emotionally Disturbed Pupils

Hook, Pauline Pepper 06 1900 (has links)
The problem of this investigation was to compare the linguistic competence of learning disabled and emotionally disturbed pupils by means of two performance tasks. Sixty subjects, seven-and-eight-year old monolingual public and private school pupils, were assigned to three groups of twenty subjects each, learning disabled, emotionally disturbed and normally achieving children. The majority of those in the learning disabled and the normally achieving groups were from middle-class families, with the majority of fathers owners of small businesses. A majority (17) of the emotionally disturbed group attended the public schools.

The relation between vocabulary and mental age of a rural white population

Unknown Date (has links)
Study conducted with 63 rural school children, as measured by the Revised Stanford-Binet Intelligence Scale. Since size of vocabulary is considered to be a relatively valid measure of intelligence and correlates to a high degree with the mental age obtained on the Biney scale, it is concluded in accordance with the results of this study, that the test as a whole may be considered a valid measure of the mental ages of rural school children. However, since the cases used in this study were taken from a limited population, the results are not to be considered conclusive, but due to the high correlation obtained, a need for further study is indicated. / "A Paper." / "Submitted to the Graduate Council of Florida State University in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of Master of Science." / "February, 1951." / Typescript. / Advisor: Marcus B. The effects of early services on the relationship between children with behavior problems and low IQ and maternal education

Pancella, Kara R. 01 January 2016 (has links)
The present study investigated whether the impact of early services was greater for mothers with less education and their first grade children who had less than an 80 IQ and behavior problems. Previous research has focused on children with autism, behavior problems, and interventions, whereas this study did not include autism as a characteristic of the sample population. Multiple regression analysis was used to determine if early services moderated the relationship between maternal education and problem behaviors in children; for which each regression model utilized maternal anxiety, child’s gender, and expressive and receptive language ability as the control variables. When investigating the moderating influence of early services for children with low IQ in the relationship between behavior problems and maternal education, it was found that early services did not have a significant moderating effect. However, it was found that maternal education explained a significant amount of variance in the externalizing behavior of children at the .05 level. This finding indicates that the level of maternal education is a better predictor of behavior problems than whether a child receives early intervention. The significance of this study is that it adds to the research for children with low IQ. However, the results in this study should not be considered for the use of policymaking, given the limitations presented.

DEVELOPMENTAL CASCADE MODELS IN AUTISM SPECTRUM DISORDERS

Bennett, Teresa A. January 2014 (has links)

Background: Developmental neuroscience research suggests that relative differences in emerging social skills between very young children with ASD may influence the trajectories of multiple important developmental domains, such as language ability. Such “cascade” associations between developmental trajectories may contribute in important ways to the substantial heterogeneity in symptoms and functioning seen in children with ASD. However, longitudinal research has yet to test such “cascade” models of change in children diagnosed with ASD.

Objectives: In this dissertation I aimed to model cascade patterns of association between social competence and language ability pathways in the year after diagnosis of ASD in preschool-aged children. Data for 365 participants aged 2-4 years old who had been recently diagnosed with ASD and followed prospectively were obtained from the “Pathways To Better Outcomes in ASD Study”.

Methods: Study 1 aimed to determine whether social competence and structural language ability could be measured as distinct constructs that were invariant over time and between clinically relevant groups of young children with ASD. Study 2 modeled longitudinal reciprocal associations between these domains. Study 3 addressed the issue of variability and change within this sample, and tested whether baseline levels and rate of change in one domain were associated with subsequent growth in the other.

Results: Social competence and language ability constructs were measurably distinct and invariant in a young sample comprising verbal and non-verbal children with ASD. Only small reciprocal cascade effects were evident between social and language pathways. Levels of social competence at time of diagnosis were significantly associated with subsequent language growth.

Conclusions: In preschoolers with ASD, advantages in social competence as measured at time of diagnosis appear to “spill over” in a feed-forward cascade model to influence progress in language ability. Social competence and language ability then appear to develop along more specialized, less interrelated pathways.
/ Doctor of Philosophy (PhD)

Construction and validation of a Hong Kong graded Chinese character identification test (HKGCCIT) for primary school children / Xianggang xiao xue Zhong wen shi zi deng ji liang biao de jian gou he yan zheng.

January 2012 (has links)
Background / Word identification is increasingly recognized to be a prerequisite for each child to acquire knowledge and culture in a colorful reading world. A valid assessment of a child’s word identification is very important for literacy instruction and evaluation. It also helps identifying children with literacy difficulties at an early stage because word identification is an important indicator of literacy difficulties. Existing measures of Chinese character identification are with limitations in several aspects. For example, some scales are designed for primary school children of low grades only. Also, most of the scales are of restricted use and can only be administered by professional educational psychologists or speech therapists. There has not been one standardized Chinese character identification scale with local norms for the use of Hong Kong primary school teachers. The present research attempted to construct a standardized Chinese character identification scale with local norms for primary school children based on a database of Hong Kong Chinese primary school texts. The Hong Kong Graded Chinese Character Identification Test (HKGCCIT) will offer teachers an assessment tool to assess the word recognition level of their students. The assessment result will help teachers identify at-risk readers and plan for instruction and remediation. / Methods and Results / There were five phases in the development of the HKGCCIT. / In the first phase, a database of 3033 Chinese characters was constructed based on six widely used primary texts in Hong Kong. Difficulty level of each character was determined through a series of procedures. The numbers of characters in each grade were 530, 646, 686, 563, 389, and 219 respectively. / In the second phase, the graded-characters were divided into 14 forms and were tried out with primary school children in several schools. It was found that the number of character successfully recognized by half of the tested students in each grade was 311, 423, 437, 337, 206 and 115, respectively. / The third phase was the construction phase of the HKGCCIT. First, we divided the database into six sub-databases and determined the difficulty level (L1-L5) of each character in the corresponding grade based on the passing rate. To ensure within-grade and between-grade difficulty levels of the selected characters, we separately randomly sampled 20 characters from L3 (passing rate: 40%-60%) and L4 (passing rate: 20%-40%) in the six sub-databases. In addition, we selected 10 characters from L2 in the grade-one sub-database and 20 characters from L5 in the grade-six sub-database. Thus, the HKGCCIT, with two parallel forms, was constructed as a graded scale with 150 characters and eight difficulty levels in total. Additionally, two forms of a reading fluency test with 200 characters were also developed to measure character reading fluency for six grades in this phase. / In the formal testing phase (i.e., phase 4), letters were sent to more than 100 schools for participation in the current study. Twelve schools from three bandings were selected to join the study. A total of 2056 students from grade-one to grade-six were tested. Two forms of the HKGCCIT and related validity measurements (i.e., two forms of reading fluency test, Taiwan Chinese Character Recognition Test) were administered. The results showed that: (1) The HKGCCIT had high internal consistency reliability coefficient (alpha=.98). (2) Grade and age development norms were constructed and the related percentile conversion tables and standardized-score conversion tables were created. (3) Item analysis based on classic testing theory and item response theory suggested that the HKGCCIT has moderate difficulty. Comparing with the Taiwan Chinese Character Recognition Test developed by Huang (2001), HKGCCIT has better fit on character frequency distribution, passing rate and IRT difficulty parameters. (4) It is an effective indicator of a child’s word identification achievement level and is highly correlated with the child’s Chinese language achievement in school. / In the validation phase (i.e., phase 5), some students with reading difficulties and average students from another study were tested by the HKGCCIT. The results showed that two groups with different reading levels demonstrated significant difference on the HKGCCIT. More importantly, we found that the norm of the HKGCCIT, in comparison to the Taiwan Chinese Character Recognition Test provides more accurate reference scores for Hong Kong students. / Conclusion / The HKCCIT, developed on the basis of a corpus of Hong Kong Chinese primary school texts, is a reliable and valid assessment tool of Chinese character identification achievement of Hong Kong primary school children. Local norms from grade-one to grade-six were established. It should be an easy assessment tool to identify at-risk readers and plan for instruction and remediation. / Detailed summary in vernacular field only. / Detailed summary in vernacular field only. / Detailed summary in vernacular field only. / Detailed summary in vernacular field only. / Detailed summary in vernacular field only. / Detailed summary in vernacular field only. / Detailed summary in vernacular field only. / Detailed summary in vernacular field only. / Detailed summary in vernacular field only. / Detailed summary in vernacular field only. / Detailed summary in vernacular field only. / Thesis (Ph.D.)--Chinese University of Hong Kong, 2012. / Includes bibliographical references (leaves 120-125). / Abstracts in Chinese and English. / Wu Qiuping.
