Hypercapitalism : an investigation into the relationship between language, new media, and social perceptions of value

Graham, Philip W. January 2001 (has links)
Overall, this thesis purports to make two significant contributions to knowledge. The first is a foundational critique of political economy in the context of an emergent global knowledge economy. The second is a method for analysing evaluations in language. The relationships that give coherence to those two contributions are as follows. The widely-heralded emergence of a knowledge economy indicates that more intimate aspects of human activity have become exposed to commodification on a massive scale, specifically, activities associated with thought and language. Correspondingly, more abstract forms of value have developed as the products of thought and language have become dominant commodity forms. Historical investigation shows that value has moved from an objective category in political economy, pertaining to such substances as precious metals and land, to become situated today predominantly in “expert” expressions of language, or more precisely, their institutional contexts of production. These are now propagated and circulated on a global scale. Legal, political, and technological developments are key in the development of new, more abstract forms of labour and value, although the relationships connecting these are neither simple nor direct. They are, however, inseparably related in the trajectories that this thesis describes. Consequently they are dealt with inseparably throughout.

Language, Technology and the “They Self”: How Linguistic Manipulation of Mass and Social Media Distract from the Authentic Self

Talley, Edith M. 01 May 2014 (has links)
This thesis examines German philosopher Martin Heidegger’s concepts of being and time, the role of language in being, and ways of authentic being through the lens of modern media practices in the Information Age. It relates Heidegger’s philosophy to the media ecology theory introduced by Marshall McLuhan in the 1960s by exploring McLuhan’s themes of tribal, typographical and electronic man. In addition, this thesis considers the role of mass media in information dissemination. The goal of this report is to explicate the shaping effects of mass media, especially social media, on individual perceptions and societal culture and identify ways in which such shaping affects authentic ways of being.

Linguistic practice on contemporary Jordanian radio : publics and participation

Fras, Jona Jan January 2018 (has links)
Contemporary studies of media Arabic often pass over issues of media form and the broader relevance of language use. The present thesis addresses these issues directly by examining the language used in Jordanian non-government radio programmes. It examines recordings and transcriptions of a range of programme genres - primarily, morning talk shows and 'service programmes' (barāmiž ḳadamātiyya), and Islamic advice programmes, both of which feature significant audience input via call-ins. The data are examined through an interpretive form of discourse analysis, drawing on linguistic anthropological theory that analyses language as a form of performance, through comparison of radio programmes as 'units of interaction'. This is supported by sociolinguistic data obtained from the recordings, including phoneme frequency analysis, in addition to the author's experience of 6 months of fieldwork in Jordan in 2014-15. The analysis focuses on four major themes: (1) the influence of media context, specifically the sonic exclusivity and temporal evanescence of radio, on language use, as well as the impact of digital media; (2) the indexicality of certain locally salient sociolinguistic variables, and the use to which they are put in radio talk; (3) the role of language in constructing the identity, or persona, of broadcasters; and (4) the role of language in constructing and validating authoritative discourse, in particular that of Islamic texts and scripture in religious programming. Through its analysis of these themes, using selected recording excerpts as demonstrative case studies, this thesis shows that specific strategies of Arabic use in the radio setting crucially affect both the publics - the addressed audiences - of radio talk, as well as the frameworks of participation in this talk - how and to what extent broadcasters and members of the public can participate in mediated discourse. The results demonstrate the unique value of an interpretive study of linguistic performance for highlighting broader social issues, including the inclusion and exclusion of particular segments of the society through linguistic strategies - Jordanians versus non-Jordanians, Ammanis versus non-Ammanis, and pious Muslims versus non-believers; and the use of language to reassert, or occasionally challenge, dominant ideologies and discourses, such as those of gender, nationalism, and religion. This study thus contributes an examination of contemporary Jordanian non-government radio language in its social and political context - something which has not been attempted before, and which provides important insights regarding both the nature of contemporary Arabic media language and its broader social and cultural import.

Filmsprache und Filmanalyse in der Medienpädagogik

Schäfer, Horst 03 February 2016 (has links)
The experience with film seminars for students has shown that these mostly do not dispose of enough foreknowledge for film analyses and they also lack the technical terms of the cinematic means. Since the length of films blows up each university time slot pattern, and therefore the seminars are conducted as block events, the students get an introduction from scratch in an orientation session as basic knowledge and tools for their own film analysis. This basic knowledge of \'film language and film analysis in the media education\' has been optimized again and again in the last twenty years and is used in the present version at the TU Dresden and the University of Duisburg/Essen.

Англицизмы в немецкоязычном медийном дискурсе : магистерская диссертация / Anglicisms in German-language media discourse

Усольцева, А. Д., Usoltseva, A. D. January 2020 (has links)
The Master's thesis is based on the linguistic approach. The purpose of this research is to classify anglicisms in the German-language media discourse and determine their specificity. The study analyzes the printed editions of the German-language magazine “DER SPIEGEL” for the year 2018. This magazine is common not only in Germany but also in other countries, mainly European. It can shape public opinion on selected issues, and is also one of the leading media sources in Germany. This Master's thesis analyzes the concepts of anglicism and media discourse, the specifics of anglicisms is the reasons for their borrowing, the historical aspects of borrowings that entered the German language, the difficulties in their entry into the language, the attitude of German-speaking society to anglicisms, the typologies of foreign-language borrowings and ways of their assimilation in the German language, the concept of the phenomenon of Denglisch, and the main classification of borrowings. The research focuses on the analysis of anglicisms and foreign language borrowings from the third language in the magazines "DER SPIEGEL" for the year 2018 such as their calculation, spread throughout main areas, their classification, as well as consideration of their functions.

Languages, media and arts ? aims to understand the meaning of the November 2015 student occupations in S?o Paulo, through three pillars: the discursive analysis of the episode, from theoretical references such as Foucault and Derrida, the study of media based on Chomsky, and the analysis of materials produced by students, brought up by Canevacci, so that through the cartography method of Deleuze and Guattari, we can understand the issue of occupations from different views and perspectives. We expect to bring reflections on the memory of the student movement and the way discursive memory of occupations has been built ? crossed, legitimized and re-signified by the discourse of the media. We also hope to bring reflections if it is possible to think of occupations as an event, from Foucault?s and Derrida?s viewpoint, in order to understand the effects of meaning that these events produced on the construction of the memory of the student movements in History, their differences and similarities. / Este trabalho, inscrito no mestrado interdisciplinar LIMIAR ? Between the Mediated and the Performed : an empirical contribution to understanding Arabic public spheres

Dajani, Deena January 2010 (has links)
The notion of a nascent Arabic public sphere vis-à-vis the region s transnational news networks has been at the centre of much debate. However, this debate is met with little empirical grounding as well as a conceptual limitation to discussing political publics. This thesis seeks to contribute to and inform current debates by means of an empirical exploration of Arabic public spheres across the mediated-political realm of news media as well as the performative-cultural sphere of interactive theatre. The Jordanian parliamentary elections of November 2007 offer a framework for the research which is made up of two case studies. The first case study examines the portrayal and representation of Jordanian citizens in the news coverage of the parliamentary elections. Four transnational broadcasters (al-Jazeera, al-Arabiya, al-Hurra and JTV) were monitored during the lead up to and post the elections (over a month s duration) and different modes of participation were identified in the coverage. The second case study explores the ways in which Jordanian citizens participated in interactive theatre performances about the elections across Jordan. The performances were specifically developed to ellicit responses from audiences in the form of discussion as well as role playing (in which the audiences assume the roles of citizens in a town hall meeting). Results from the two case studies revealed significant differences in the ways in which citizens participated, or were portrayed as participating, across the political and cultural spheres. The transnational media portrayed citizens largely as observers of the political process and, less frequently, as commentators on issues of public concern. The mediated public sphere was also found to be gendered and afforded Jordanian women less presence and access to participate. On the other hand, the cultural public sphere afforded citizens spaces to discuss issues of public concern as well as contest dominant and exclusionary narratives within their societies. Jordanian women were also found to negotiate change through the reinterpretation of the symbolic. These findings demonstrate that confining our understanding of Arabic public spheres to the political-mediated marginalises the diverse ways in which citizens do participate, particularly so in the case of women.

Do fato à notícia e ao filme : o assalto ao trem pagador /

Gomes, Márcia Valéria Alves. January 2010 (has links)
Concluímos, com essa análise, que cada meio utiliza a melhor estratégia discursiva na produção do conteúdo de seus produtos midiáticos, visando conquistar o interesse do seu público-alvo / Abstract: The aim of this work was to examine the implementation of a report about a fact critically: the robbery to a great payer train, which occurred in Rio de Janeiro (BR) in 1960 and whole news was published by O Globo, a Brazilian newspaper. We research how the factual was narrated buy audiovisual media, through the reproduction of that fact itself into a film discourse. We have found out that O assalto ao Trem Pagador presents a new reading of the facts in order to reach the expectator's audiovisual medium. Our goal was set as soon as it has been realized that the film discourse took the media discourse as a source of information to change the real facts into another version of the events, which now approaches and departs from media discourse. Such version had its newspaper language adapted to the audivisual media. Through the investigation of occurrences, similarities and differences between both media discourse and the meaning generation to the target audience of each means, newspaper and cinema, we have analyzed the discursive strategies that were used by the media means to recreate a believable context with the resemblance to the real fact. As we believe the journalistic discourse has served as a source of information for elaborating the film discourse, we chose a method allow us to define the similarities and differences between these discourses, thus we have opted for a comparative analytical methodology. We have concluded from this analysis that each medium tries to use the best communicative strategy, or strategies, in the production of a discursive content for their media products so that the product can capture the interest of their target audience / Mestre

Regional Mexican radio in the U.S. : marketing genre, making audiences

Morgan, Melanie Josephine 09 June 2011 (has links)
This dissertation investigates how Regional Mexican radio in the U.S. tracks and drives changes in Mexican-American identity by combining different musical genres to create composite portraits of its audiences. Regional Mexican radio, which plays a mixture of ranchera, norteño, banda, and other regional Mexican genres to target a largely working-class audience of recent immigrants, is currently the most popular Spanish-language format in the U.S. Programmers for these stations act as mediators, navigating the public relation between notions of Latino identity constructed by national Spanish-language media conglomerates and local demographics. By modifying the generic composition of their playlists to strike a compromise between the two, they both monitor and produce the sociomusical categories that distinguish their listenership. Ethnographic research at Regional Mexican radio stations in Austin and San Antonio demonstrate the role that institutional organization plays in creating programming. National conglomerates that increasingly own these stations determine the broad outline of the industry, but local programmers make most decisions about programming content. Based on a historical review of Tejano radio, I argue that the musical mixtures created by Spanish-language programmers have responded to both past and present social and economic challenges facing Mexican-American immigrants. Through detailed analysis programming at five Regional Mexican stations, I argue that each variety of music played signifies regional, generational and gendered variations of Mexican-American identity that stations combine in different proportions to reflect local listenership. I also explore the role of station-sponsored events in gathering information about listeners. Events encourage listeners to embody their status as part of the Regional Mexican audience, a concept ultimately constructed by the radio stations. Ultimately, this dissertation adds to existing literatures on Spanish-language media, radio and Mexican-American music. / text
