Abstract: In this work, ASTM F 138 austenitic stainless steel, used in temporary and permanent orthopaedic implants manufacture, was subjected to laser surface treatment. The purpose is analyze the microstructural changes resulting from this treatment and their effects on the microabrasive wear and corrosion resistance. The microstructural characterization was performed by optical microscopy, scanning electron microscopy, Vickers microhardness and X-ray diffraction. In order to analyze the corrosion behavior, three different types of electrochemical tests were carried out before and after treatment, using Ringer's solution as electrolyte. The wear behavior was evaluated using ball-cratering microabrasive wear tests, using slurry of silicon carbide particles (SiC) in distilled water and slurry of SiC in Ringer's solution. After laser treatment, the steel presented a refined microstructure consisted of austenite dendrites, with a 23% hardness increase and improved corrosion and wear resistance.

In this work, the software ANSYS, based on the Finite Element Method, is adapted to simulate the three-dimensional heat flux during the laser remelting surface treatment. The numerical analysis is validated against theoretical results furnished by other models from the literature for laser surface remelting of aluminum and against theoretical and experimental results of Al-5wt%Ni alloy samples. Laser remelting experiments with Al-1,5%wtFe samples have been carried out by using a 2kW Yb fiber laser. For comparative effects, the laser tracks were performed with different laser beam velocities for a fixed value of power. It was observed that both the substrate and the treated region had a typical cellular morphology. The microstructures resulting from the laser treatment were analyzed by using electron scanning microscopy and very refined cell spacing has been observed, which can induce a significant hardness increase confirmed by Vickers microhardness tests. A partial dissolution technique has been performed to foreground the intermetallics at the substrate and at the laser treated zone, showing the intermetallics redistribution inside the molten pool and giving indications of increased corrosion resistance on the treated region / Mestrado / Materiais e Processos de Fabricação / Mestre em Engenharia Mecânica

The objective of this work is to observe the micros1ructural changes and effects on corrosion resistance of the duplex stainless steels UNS S32304 and S32205, commonly used by the petroleum industry, following the execution of laser surface remelting treatments. Various initial tests were carried out to determine the parameters for the experimental process. Following the optimum choice of parameters, microstructural changes were analyzed by means of optical microscopy, Scanning Electron Microscopy, X-ray Diffraction and Vickers Microhardness. In this way, data was obtained, which could then be compared with the starting condition of the alloys. In order to analyze the corrosive behavior of the alloys before and after the treatments, cyclic polarization tests were carried out. A solution of 3.5% NaCI (artificial sea water) was utilized, as duplex stainless steels are regularly used by the petroleum industry in offshore locations. The results obtained showed that when treated superflcially by laser, due to rapid resolidification, the alloys became almost ferritic, and since the leveI of nitrogen in the composition of both alloys is superior to their solubility limit in ferrite, a precipitation of Cr2N (chromium nitrides) occurred in the ferritic matrix, causing loss of corrosion resistance, thus signifying an increase in surface hardness / Mestrado / Materiais e Processos de Fabricação / Mestre em Engenharia Mecânica

Processing and characterization of carbon black-filled electrically conductive nylon-12 nanocomposites produced by selective laser sintering

Athreya, Siddharth Ram 24 February 2010 (has links)
Electrically conductive polymer composites are suitable for use in the manufacture of antistatic products and components for electronic interconnects, fuel cells and electromagnetic shielding. The most widely used processing techniques for producing electrically conductive polymer composites place an inherent constraint on the geometry and architecture of the part that can be fabricated. Hence, this thesis investigates selective laser sintering (SLS), a rapid prototyping technique, to fabricate and characterize electrically conductive nanocomposites of Nylon-12 filled with 4% by weight of carbon black. The objective of the dissertation was to study the effects of the SLS process on the microstructure and properties of the nanocomposite. The effect of laser power and the scan speed on the flexural modulus and part density of the nanocomposite was studied. The set of parameters that yielded the maximum flexural modulus and part density were used to fabricate specimens to study the tensile, impact, rheological and viscoelastic properties. The electrical conductivity of the nanocomposite was also investigated. The thermo-mechanical properties and electrical conductivity of the nanocomposites produced by SLS were compared with those produced by extrusion-injection molding. The structure and morphology of the SLS-processed and extrusion-injection molded nanocomposites were characterized using gas pycnometry, gel permeation chromatography, differential scanning calorimetry, electron microscopy, polarized light microscopy and x-ray diffraction. Physical models were developed to explain the effects of the processing technique on the structure and properties of the nanocomposites. Finally, a one-dimensional heat transfer model of the SLS process that accounted for sintering-induced densification and thermal degradation of the polymer was implemented in order to study the variation in part density with respect to the energy density of the laser beam. This dissertation demonstrated that SLS can be successfully used to fabricate electrically conductive polymer nanocomposites with a relatively low percolation threshold. This capability combined with the ability of SLS to fabricate complicated three-dimensional objects without part-specific tooling could open up several new opportunities.
