Reconsidering Shakespeare's 'Lateness' : studies in the last playsChen, Xing January 2014 (has links)
Shakespeare’s last plays, because of their apparent similarity in thematic concern, dramatic arrangements and stylistic features, are often considered by modern scholarship to form a unique group in his canon. Their departure from the preceding great tragedies and their status as an artist’s last works have long aroused scholarly interest in Shakespeare’s lateness—the study, essentially, of the relationship between his advancing years and his last-period dramatic output, encompassing questions such as ‘Why did Shakespeare write the last plays?’, ‘What influenced his writing?’, and ‘What is the significance of these plays?’. Answers to the questions are varied and often contradictory, partly because the subject is the elusive Shakespeare, and partly because the concept of lateness as an artistic phenomenon is itself unstable and problematic. This dissertation reconsiders Shakespeare’s lateness by reading the last plays in the light of, but not bound by current theories of late style and writing. The analysis incorporates traditional literary, stylistic and biographic approach in various combinations. The exploration of the works (Pericles, Cymbeline, The Winter’s Tale, The Tempest, Henry VIII and The Two Noble Kinsmen), while underlined by an interest in their shared concern with the effect, power and the possibilities of art and language, also places an emphasis on each play’s special, distinct features and contexts. A pattern of steady artistic development is revealed, bespeaking Shakespeare’s continued professional energy and ongoing self-challenge, which are, in fact, at the centre of his working methods throughout his career. The dissertation therefore proposes that Shakespeare’s ‘lateness’ is in fact a continuation of his sustained dramatic development instead of, in terms of working attitude and methods, a brand new, sharply different phase, and that his last plays are the result of his, as it were, ‘working as usual’. It also suggests that occasionally ‘ungrouping’ the plays, which frees the critic from perspectives preconditioned by classifying them under labels such as ‘romances’ and ‘tragicomedies’, might yield fruitful insight into late Shakespeare.

Previous issue date: 2010-05-30 / This study approaches the implantation aspects of the Fastening Learning Program in the city
of Rio Verde (GO), especially in relation to proposed pedagogical goals and the reached
results. This Program began in 1997, by an initiative of the Brazilian Education Ministry,
aiming to implant organizational, curricular and pedagogical measures to correct distortions in
the scholar float of 5th and 6th year students from Elementary School. The Program done in
Rio Verde came from a project planned by the Center of Studies and Researches in Education,
Culture and Communitary Action (Cenpec), which consisted on serving these students in
Fastening classes in a two-year period. The goal of the research was to verify the
effectiveness of the goals done of this project, which one, although it seemed political and
pedagogical suitable, showed signs that it was not reaching its goals, in face of the difficulties
in organizing the teaching contents and methodology, the students were distant in relation to
proposal, the not appropriate evaluation practices, and others. The interest in analyzing the
proposal was to check if students from Fastening classes and established again to the regular
teaching showed compatible performance in relation to other students, if they were attending
classes or, because of other reasons, have quit school. To do this research were used as
procedures: analysis of official documents and interviews with students, school leaders and
teachers. The data analyses shows a considerable distance between the proclaimed goals and
the done ones, showing to the responsible for the direction of this Program the need of
rethinking their goals and pedagogical and didactic procedures.

Impacts of Changing the Transit Signal Priority Requesting Threshold on Bus Performance and General Traffic: A Sensitivity AnalysisSheffield, Michael Harmon 17 June 2020 (has links)
A sensitivity analysis was performed on the transit signal priority (TSP) requesting threshold to evaluate its impact on bus performance and general traffic. Two distinct bus routes were evaluated to determine the optimal requesting threshold that would balance the positive impacts on bus performance with the negative impacts on general traffic. Route 217, a conventional bus route, and the Utah Valley Express (UVX), a bus rapid transit line, utilize a dedicated short-range communication (DSRC)-based TSP system as part of their normal, day-to-day operations. Using field-generated data exclusively, bus performance and general traffic were evaluated over a 7-month period from February through August 2019. Bus performance was evaluated through on-time performance (OTP), schedule deviation, travel time, and dwell time, while the traffic analysis was performed by evaluating split failure, change in green time, and the frequency at which TSP was served. The requesting thresholds evaluated for Route 217 were 5-, 3-, 2-, and 0-minutes, which stipulate how far behind schedule the bus must be in order to request TSP. For UVX, 5-minutes and 2-minutes, as well as ON and OFF scenarios were evaluated; ON meant the buses were always requesting regardless of how late they were, while OFF meant that no requests were made and operations would be as if there were no TSP at all. A combination of observational and statistical analyses concluded with convincing evidence that OTP, schedule deviation, and travel time improve as the requesting threshold approaches zero with negligible impacts to general traffic. For Route 217, as the requesting threshold changed from 3, to 2, to 0 minutes, OTP increased 2.0 and 2.5 percent, respectively, mean schedule deviation improved 15.9 and 20.9 seconds, respectively, and travel time decreased at 72 percent of timepoints. Meanwhile, negative impacts to traffic occurred if an increase in split failure was measured after TSP was served, a phenomenon observed a maximum of once every 43 minutes. For UVX, as the requesting threshold changed from 5, to 2 minutes, to ON, OTP increased 7.6 and 4.7 percent, respectively, mean schedule deviation improved 24.3 and 15.0 seconds, respectively, and travel time decreased between 72 percent of timepoints. Thus, it is concluded that under the TSP system as implemented, bus performance improves as the requesting threshold approaches zero with inconsequential impacts to general traffic.

L'œuvre poétique tardive de Jean Hans Arp (1886-1966) / Jean Hans Arp’s Late Poetry (1886-1966)Mareuge, Agathe 10 October 2014 (has links)
A close study of Jean Hans Arp’s late poetry exposes the inadequacy of the traditional opposition between non-sense and sense, which is frequently used to analyse the transition from his Dada production to the poetic works of the 1950s and the 1960s. By introducing a formal and structural coherence, the poet manages to preserve plurivocity and contradiction on a semantic level. Considering the specificities of Arp’s late poetic forms, the study shows that invention and variety are as vivid then as they were during Dada Zurich, based on both innovation and actualisation of former techniques. This tension is inherent to his anthological and editorial activity as well, which is considered here as a key element of his late poetics. In his sixties and up until his eighties, the poet develops strategies aimed at constituting a reflexive work which integrates the earlier production while always avoiding the trap of (self-) monumentalisation. After 1943-1945, the relationship between Arp's poetry and reality outside the language undergoes a profound referential change. His increasing criticism of western rationalism and need for subjective expression, without returning to neo-romanticism, form the basis for a poetic discourse on the world and the possibilities of language, a “pocket cosmogony” that is both humble and demiurgic”. The latter hinges on an unwavering faith in the creative power of the poetic word and its ability to generate other worlds. This radical modernity, consciously asserted, locates Arp’s late work as an original experiment in the context of the avant-gardes post-1945, highlighting his specific itinerary within a transitional generation.
