Cultural Collectivism and Tightness Moderate Responses to Norm Violators: Effects on Power Perception, Moral Emotions, and Leader Support

Stamkou, Eftychia, van Kleef, Gerben A., Homan, Astrid C., Gelfand, Michele J., van de Vijver, Fons J.R., van Egmond, Marieke C., Boer, Diana, Phiri, Natasha, Ayub, Nailah, Kinias, Zoe, Cantarero, Katarzyna, Treister, Dorit Efrat, Figueiredo, Ana, Hashimoto, Hirofumi, Hofmann, Eva, Lima, Renata P., Lee, I-Ching January 2019 (has links) (PDF)
Responses to norm violators are poorly understood. On one hand, norm violators are perceived as powerful, which may help them to get ahead. On the other hand, norm violators evoke moral outrage, which may frustrate their upward social mobility. We addressed this paradox by considering the role of culture. Collectivistic cultures value group harmony and tight cultures value social order. We therefore hypothesized that collectivism and tightness moderate reactions to norm violators. We presented 2,369 participants in 19 countries with a norm violation or a norm adherence scenario. In individualistic cultures, norm violators were considered more powerful than norm abiders and evoked less moral outrage, whereas in collectivistic cultures, norm violators were considered less powerful and evoked more moral outrage. Moreover, respondents in tighter cultures expressed a stronger preference for norm followers as leaders. Cultural values thus influence responses to norm violators, which may have downstream consequences for violators' hierarchical positions.

College students’ memory of the imposed social norm of their Texas high school: a replication of Gelfand’s tightness-looseness study

Merriweather, Katherine Anne 18 September 2014 (has links)
Using Texas undergraduates’ memory of high school social norms (n = 88), I attempt to determine the replicability of Gelfand et al.’s (2011) research on the tightness-looseness scores of 33 nations. Tightness-looseness refers to a complex model in which cultural social norms are explicated. “Tight” cultures indicate strong social norms where members perceive larger pressures for conformity. These pressures result in higher levels of self-monitoring and regulation. Conversely, “loose” cultures signify weaker social norms and a higher tolerance for atypical conduct. My research confirms that the tightness-looseness model can be applied to school environments because my research revealed a tightness-looseness mean score of 4.3, which is near the midpoint of the six-point scale. Gelfand et al.’s (2011) research (n = 6,823) revealed that the United State had a tightness-looseness score, 5.4, which was near the middle of the range of scores for the 33 nation samples, which ranged from 1 to 12.3. However, my research discovered no significant effects of tightness-looseness on demographic variables, or on the Behavior or Situation Measures. These non-significant findings do not necessarily preclude the concepts discussed here from future research. Rather, future research should include comparison groups from different educational environments and a larger sample size reflective of Gelfand et al. (2011). / text

Kontrola těsnosti světlometů / Verification Tightness of Headlamp

Maule, Jiří January 2010 (has links)
The task of my work is to describe and analyse tightness control of front headlights in automotive industry. This work is concerned with theoretical indi-cative allocation according to the light source, development and contruction of headlights in preamble. There is shown the way of disclosing the outflow pres-sure area at loose headlight in next part of this work. It defines the most proba-bly caused reason of untightness with help of Ishikawov diagram. There is also made evaluation of measured values and determined the main cause of un-tightness. At the end there are shown possibilities of statistic´s evaluation of measured values and made changes necesarry for untightness elimination.

Topological games and selection principles / Jogos topológicos e princípios seletivos

Costa, Matheus Duzi Ferreira 19 July 2019 (has links)
This paper is dedicated to the beginning of the development of a book introducing topological games and selection principles. Here, the classical games (such as the Banach-Mazur) and selection principles (such as the Rothberger or Menger properties) are presented. The most notable applications are also displayed both the classical (such as the characterization of Baire spaces with the Banach-Mazur game) and the recent (such as the relation between the Menger property and D-spaces). In addition to the content for the book, a problem in finite combinatorics that was found in the study of positional strategies is presented (as well as a partial solution) together with some results regarding new variations of classical selection principles and games, which give rise to the characterization of some notable spaces.

Studium vlivu přísady XYPEX na reologii čerstvých betonů a trvanlivosti zatvrdlých betonů / Studying the influence of additives on rheology XYPEX fresh concrete and hardened concrete durability

Kochová, Kateřina January 2013 (has links)
This thesis is focused on the study of the influence of crystalline ingredients XYPEX, on the rheology of fresh concrete and durability of hardened concrete. It examines the influence of crystalline additives on the rheology of cement pastes with different types of cement with different temperatures, increasing water tightness and gas tightness and compressive strength. Also assesses pore structure with different bridging cracks.

Tätskikt i klimatskal : En studie av byggentreprenörers arbetssätt

Nilsson, Tim January 2013 (has links)
As energy prices skyrocket and the environmental issues become more frequently debated, interest in energy-efficient buildings has increased sharply in the past decade. Because of this, the interest to achieve high air tightness in building envelopes have once again awakened, due to a good air tightness contributes to lower energy consumption in several ways and to a healthier indoor environment. As the regulations for energy consumption and controls of achieved air tightness has tightened considerably in recent years, the work regarding sheets for air tightness changed significantly for construction contractors. This thesis includes a study that aims to detect what kind of manuals, recommendations or instructions contractors working according, and how a number of randomly selected construction companies in Halland, Sweden, are dealing with the matter of high air tightness of the building envelopes. The study also includes a knowledge inventory of supervisors, site managers and skilled workers, and what their opinions and attitudes are like towards work regarding the sheets of air tightness. The results have been compared with a similar survey dated to 2004, conducted by the SP Technical Research Institute of Sweden in collaboration with Chalmers University of Technology. The thesis provides a picture of the industry situation, but shouldn’t be seen as a statistical result due to its limited extent.

Hodnocení těsnosti těsněné trubkovnice / Tightness evaluation of gasketed tubesheet

Trubač, Daniel January 2021 (has links)
This master thesis focuses on the issue of tightness evaluation of gasketed tubesheet in U tube exchangers, which meets strength requirements of ČSN EN 13 445-3 and ČSN EN 1591-1 standards. It deals with the forces acting on the gasket when measuring the effects acting on the entire heat exchanger. A separate part is devoted to the calculation of the heat profile in the heat exchanger and verification of the strength of the heat exchanger. The final part introduces model of a heat exchanger, on which a possible approach to solving the tightness of the tubesheet in heat exchangers is presented. In thesis temperature field evaluation was conducted, the results of which were used in stress strain analysis, in order to obtain gasket contact pressure. Extreme gasket contact pressures were used to estimate leak rate limits.
