The anecdotal literature suggests that the process of legal education impairs the maintenance of emotional well being in law students. The purpose of this paper is to present the results of a cross-sequential research design to determine the effects of the law school process. Data was collected, using four standardized self-report instruments (Brief Symptom Inventory, Beck Depression Inventory, Multiple Affect Adjective Checklist, and Hassle Scale), on subjects prior to and during law school, and after graduation. Prior to law school, subjects expressed similar psychopathological symptom responses as compared with the normal population. Yet during law school and after graduation symptom levels were significantly elevated. The implications of these results are presented.

Canadian Supreme Court Decision-Making: The Personal Attribute Model in Explaining Justices' Patterns of Decision-Making, 1949-1980

This study has two purposes: first, to test the validity of the personal attribute model in explaining judicial voting behavior outside its original cultural context; second, to explain the variation in justice's voting behavior in the Canadian Supreme Court. For the most part, the result arrived in this study supports the validity of the model in cross-cultural analysis. The result of multiple regression analysis shows that four variables, region, judicial experience prior to appointment, political party of appointing Prime Minister, and tenure account for 60 percent of the variations in justice's voting behavior. This result, hence, provides an empirical finding to the development of the personal attribute model in explaining justices' voting behavior.

Neste momento de reorganização dos espaços profissionais, definir e valorizar o trabalho interdisciplinar, especialmente na relação entre a Psicologia e o Direito, possivelmente provocará, no meio jurídico, transformações nas ações e nas representações relacionadas à proteção da criança. O lugar do psicólogo passou a ser discutido nessa perspectiva, pois as propostas de depoimento especial para a escuta da criança em situação judicial o coloca na função de facilitador do diálogo entre o juiz e a vítima, em um método de inquirição. Com isso, o aprendizado da interdisciplinaridade é prejudicado, porque o psicólogo tem seu conhecimento científico desvalorizado, assim como as técnicas que orientam seu trabalho são submetidas aos procedimentos e finalidades do Direito. Diante de tal impasse, a presente pesquisa tem por objetivo analisar e discutir as representações dos juízes e dos desembargadores quanto ao papel do psicólogo na produção de subsídios para as decisões judiciais, nos casos de violência sexual na infância. Today, there is a continued debate about its role in cases of child sexual abuse. At this time of reorganization of the professional field, to define and enhance interdisciplinary work, especially in the relationship between psychology and the law, will possibly provoke, amid the juridical environment, transformations in the actions and representations related to child protection.The role of the psychologist enters the debate in regards to the special testimony for listening to a child's legal situation. This puts him in the role of facilitator of dialogue between the judge and the victim in a method of inquiry. Thus, the interdisciplinary learning is impaired because the psychologist has their scientific knowledge devalued. Also, the techniques that guide their work are subject to the procedures and purposes of the law. We sought to understand whether students prepare future projects of action for reducing social inequality. The study was conducted at a particular university in a little city of Sao Paulo. This study was grounded theory based on three pillars: a) an analysis of the conditions of life under capitalism, b) a discussion on the role of education in capitalist society influencing law degree, and c) from the intersection of psychology and law aimed to understand: social inequality and social movements. The historical materialism dialectical was used as methodological perspective in qualitative research. Were structured as material for analysis in this study: 2 Instrument Information Search (IIS), containing identification data and socio-demographic data, as well as written answers for each participant, produced from two texts of popular movements. Were performed two Focal Groups meetings. The considerations, reflections and notes on the information obtained, were produced from a dialectical analysis as a way to understand the conflicts between individuals and society, resulting summaries, the researcher developed from an interpretative analysis of the contradictions expressed in texts written by participants. As this study indicated the main considerations: I) need to broaden the discussion about what are the social movements and their forms of collective expression in daily life; II) the importance of more research that seeks to understand the characteristics of law students, their specificities, and their cultural universe, and III) the need to develop a linked network between psychology and law, which favors original practices with creativity, flexibility and methodological foundation to integrate the knowledge of both areas, to enable a mode of action against social inequalities. / Essa pesquisa foi realizada a partir da perspectiva hist?rico-cultural, valorizando os aspectos descritivos e as percep??es pessoais de 10 universit?rios de Direito, focando o particular como parte da totalidade social, procurando compreender como concebem: situa??es concretas de desigualdade social; a import?ncia ou n?o e a criminaliza??o dos movimentos sociais. Buscou-se entender se os universit?rios elaboram ou n?o projetos futuros de atua??o para redu??o da desigualdade social. O estudo foi realizado em uma institui??o universit?ria particular do interior de S?o Paulo. The Impact of Pretrial Publicity on Perceptions of Guilt

Indiana University-Purdue University Indianapolis (IUPUI) / Ninety-eight empirical effects examining the impact of pretrial publicity (PTP) on perceptions of guilt were meta-analytically analyzed. As hypothesized, results suggested that anti-defendant PTP was associated with increased perceptions of defendant guilt, whereas pro-defendant PTP was associated with decreased perceptions of defendant guilt. Additionally, several moderator variables were examined. The results suggested that the size of the effect of PTP is dependent upon several variables, including the level of the analysis (jury-level vs. juror level), the type of crime involved in the case, the nature of the information provided to the participants in the control condition, the reality of the case used in the study, the delay between PTP exposure and the collection of the verdict preference, the medium of the PTP presentation, the publication status of the data source, and the outcome measure utilized.
